Funny thing: I have 0 clue about bikes or anything related. Also living on the whole other side of the globe, randomly got these vids as a background noise while doing my job. And I really appreciate how chill yet entertaining content you have. Great vids! Great bike! Great job so far! Thanks
Make sure the front catch on the saddlebag lids are fully engaged...ALWAYS! I own a 1980 FLT Shovel, and will tell you original saddlebag parts for the early FLT's are like hen's teeth when you try and find them. I had to find a lid and all the pieces on that lid, and actually carried a list in my wallet of the parts needed. Whenever I stopped at a Harley dealer, I'd ask the parts guy if they had any old stock, and after a few years, I had all the parts. Moral of the story, don't lose a lid! LOL!!
@@tta850 the story is my ‘80 FLT belonged to a good friend who passed away from liver cancer about 30 years ago. On his death bed he gave me his motorcycle. He was literally in his death bed and surrounded by family. Very emotional for all of us. Before I could get over to get the bike, his brother took it for a ride and didn’t latch the left lid correctly and lost it. After I got the bike I adapted a later lid with a different lock. I rode the bike every 4-5 years just to keep things freed up inside but I always considered it to be my buddies bike, and I was just the custodian of the bike. I had a motorcycle milestone this year with it being 50 years on Harleys. So with that milestone I’ve decided to go through my FLT and ride it on a regular basis. I know that’s what my friend would have wanted.
To save your bag lids…where the tab on the front of the bag goes through the a slot on the lid, after you put the top on, mark and drill a small hole in the tab part. Then put one of those “ hair pin” type clips through the hole on each bag. That way, should the lid vibrate loose on the road, it can’t fly away. Should the top rattle loose from the latch, You’ll hear it rattle, but the lid will still be there when you stop to investigate. Even a cotter pin will work, carry a couple spares in case you drop one taking the lids on and off. We been doing that forever, until they came out with the bags with real hinges.
I don't know why but I seem to like watching someone else work on bikes then myself. Maybe if I watch enough I might get inspired to finish putting mine back together.
There's something satisfying about working on something that's really old. I feel it may be because of the techniques you can use. Not needing to be as gentle, can bash together ideas and solutions. Would love to have a project bike that I can practically throw around because it doesn't matter. Awesome way to learn and develop satisfaction and appreciation for. Maybe a cheap sport bike to turn into a track bike 🤔
I once got myself some of that foam pipe covering for waterlines. I liked it because it had a seam in it like wire loom. Three or four little pieces of electrical tape and it was there for years.
I'd definitely suggest key rings through the holes in the front tabs on the lids and loctite for the latches. It's super fun looking for the lids alongside the road, lol.
Good video again. I still have the original Quarter turn clips on my saddle bags still in good shape. I took some rubber hose cut in half and taped pieces on the rails years ago and had no problems all these years.
my 97 roadking had the hard bags with the same type 1/4 turn quick connects, my bags had a rubber bushing with a metal sleeve in it that the pin went through to the bracket on the other side. Had the rubber bushing on the bottom, worked well for the 23 years I owned it.
Heck yeah. The bag reno was cool, the beer cans were interesting, but the tour pack look through was the best. I love seeing that old stuff especially the old manuals.
If have nothing to do with bikes . And also, i do not understand anything about what your saying . But i like to see the progress and how you speak in front of the camera. Keep up the content ! Greetz from Germany :D
Great videos man hope you keep posting, I normally don’t comment but I wanted to throw out an idea on the backrest seat bracket It looks pretty simple to duplicate, 1/8” piece of metal from Home Chepo some drill bits and simple bends in a vice, then you still have the original from 1984 in tacked 👍🏼
Thank you! Thought about that but honestly the original backrest is in rough shape and has already been welded together a few times so I don’t think it’s too much of a loss to use it. Idk
boiling water helps manipulate rubber makes it soft and unlike dishsoap you have a better grip, Dish soap makes it all slippery it sort of works but a nightmare to hold while hold another part or if you need to squeeze it :)
Oh man no problem, no rush at all, thx for reaching back. Just throwing this out there, would you be interested in the front facing for your bike, maybe a trade type deal. Idk just a thought, have a great one!
I do the same, with big rubber fender washers inside and out. I used Allen heads and keep a small ratchet in one bag just for that. That way no one could rattle the bags around and get them off, as they can with the 1/4 turn stock latches.
Hey great vid, I have the same issue with my bags too definitely gonna use that idea also. Personally I really dig what you’re doing, we’re both at very similar projects on basically the same bike. I found a headlight housing for my 86, kinda bummed tho unfortunately it’s not gonna work so I’m still on the hunt. Looking forward to the next episode 😎
Heck yea man, another great video. I happen to have a 1989 daytona beer, same as your white cans but black and brass colored. Passed through several hands to me. What year is your softail btw? I have a 93. Just got it all back together after replacing the starter which was nudged along by your videos so thanks for that and keep it up 👍
I actually have new mirrors on order (one showed up one back ordered) but I’m gonna put the new ones on the FatBoy and take the slightly patina ones and put them in the FLT
That’s great, I’m still a few years away from retiring but already looking forward to it… Local 3 is good people but then you know all the different things IBEW stands for 😆 😉
Tour pack contents are a time capsule. That is amazing, seeing what he carried. He was well prepared for just about anything.
MacGyver would be proud.
He was definitely more prepared than I have been, I can surely learn from this 👍🏻

Thank you for watching and the kind words! 👏🙏
I'd keep the back rest but that's just me, something more to mount a back pack for you to lean on.
A dab of dawn dishsoap will make installing grommets a heck of a lot easier than dry rubber against paint. Love the series, keep it up.
Good point thank you 🙏

That's how it works😂😂😂
I watched 1 h of Dana 60 front axlr take apart and put together Videos, then i was pretty hiped to do mine🎉
It’s also satisfying to watch! You can do it! I’m out on the road and wish I could ride and summer is slowly fading away 😢
Dude keep going this is great to watch. You re a natural
Thank you 🙏
TH-cam came through when it recommended this channel last night, new sub from me enjoying the old bike videos a lot.
oddly satisfying.
Who is all here cuz youtube recommended this? Lol love it.
This is an awesome series. Very much enjoy your approach to editing.
Thank you! 👏

Amazing how you can fix little things that mean a lot and makes everything much better, Great job.
Got the same beers and some more years. Good stuff

I have been enjoying your content with this sled. Bringing it back to a reliable safe ride, keep up the good work !
Awsome video again that bike oozes history cant wait to see it on the road again
Me too! 😆
Good job, pretty much exactly what I would have done (been wrenching 40 years plus) 👍The more I see of this bike, the more I like it👌
Another great episode! Thank you and good job!

That workshop manual was a great find , it will help no end and illuminate guesswork 🤙hi from the UK 🏍😎
Great content, bikes a peach, love to see the old ones still running, will be watching going forward.

I'm watching this thinking 'I want to fit the wheels, I want to fit the wheels, I want to fit the wheels!'
Haha I know but rest assured it’s been done! ✅ 👍🏻
Moving right along on this bike. Piece by piece. Bolt by bolt. Beer by beer. Great job!
🍻 🤣
Im loving these videos man, looking forward for the next one
👏
Keep it up man. One day shorter to have this beauty complete.

I mount the hard bags on my 85 with 1/4 20 bolts. No rattles and easy to get off

Enjoy the context. May a suggest an paracort tether to keep if from flying off!
I like that, another suggestion was a key ring, maybe a tethered key ring… I have some thinking to do 🤔
Are you heading to Sturgis this year? Balls if you are and safe travels. Someday I will even tough big crowds aren't my thing.
Not this year, the plan is next year with the FLT Tour Glide. This year will be heading to Daytona on the Aprilia Tuono V4 again, so much fun!
Hey great vid, I have the same issue with my bags too definitely gonna use that idea also. Personally I really dig what you’re doing, we’re both at very similar projects on basically the same bike. That’s cool! My softail is essentially a 95 with some 96 parts, fun bike 👍🏻
I worked for a guy and threw away like 6 cases of those daytona beers lol
THIS MAN CASUALLY HAS A NISSAN GTR IN A GARAGE! SHOW AND TALK MORE ABOUT IT? Also how do you manage to get it in and out of that garage and alley
It’s a learned skill 😂 honestly I’m just used to these confined spaces
@@tta850Do you drive it often? I’d love to have a Gtr tucked away in a secret garage but the way that alley is so narrow i’d end up getting stuck 😂
i love you vids im from the uk bit shit here but i'd love toi ride a bike around nyc
It’s interesting for sure, but I’m sure the UK is too so there’s that! 👍🏻
I'm excited to see this on the highway also are you gonna clean up the mirrors as well
I actually have new mirrors on order (one showed up one back ordered) but I’m gonna put the new ones on the FatBoy and take the slightly patina ones and put them in the FLT
@@tta850 Oh okay nice also are you gonna get the gas tank cleaned up or anything like that? been super interesting Watching the process
I know this is a project bike but how much would something like this cost, after watching your videos I've become very interested in these bikes.
Don't cut up your attaching bolt, run to the local mower repair shop and pick up a round knob attaching bolt.
Gonna look into that, be nice to have a spare attaching bolt I’m sure at some point I’ll probably lose one lol
how's the GT-R?! 🔥
Great car!
what size grommet did you use?
Not sure the exact size but it’s the same style as used in the 2014-2024 models and are readily available in the aftermarket 👍🏻
@@tta850 ya i got a set but they are way to big. i guess i will drill them out. thanks for the info.

🤣
@@tta850 am I close?

Seat cover
Corbin says they can refinish the seat, thinking that’s the way I may go
