This was my first real motorcycle. I saved up $300. To buy it. Got to the dealer and they had to add sales tax of $15. I didn’t have it. I was devastated. We were leaving and they agreed to sell it for $300 out the door. I was 11 years old and it was worth it all

My first bike as well (11years old)… my dad took me to the dealer, purchased it.. put it in the wagon.. I explained how it would be so effective on my paper route… The next day he took me to the bank… I had my first payment book.. $23.70/mo. I’ve had over a dozen bikes… (and surgeries) loved to race.. went from this to a cr250 husky in 74.. and graduated on a yz450f few years back..had to pay for that fun too… so nostalgic

Man Joe… I can't even imagine being a kid and having something that cool. I grew up from the age of 10 years old with mini bikes and motorcycles but it took a few years before I had anything with what could be considered "real suspension" and stuff like that. And boy they really nailed the sound on that bike. It sounds awesome. Thanks for the content!!!

My first bike was a Yamaha 60 it was red. Get you a nail file work's great for cleaning them points brother. Also Seafoam is the best thing to add to your gas when you are first starting one that's been sitting. It also helps moistening any rubber o rings and such .Marvel's Mystery Oil is pretty good too

Sometime near 1970 Yamaha ran ads with the slogan, "someday you'll own a Yamaha". To which I would state, "no I won't". My reason being because while I had a Cat mini bike, my riding buddies all had Honda's, Mini Trail 50, CT 70, Sl 70 etc. 4-strokes all. By the 1980's I was a Yamaha Mechanic, and you are looking at a JT1, which by 1987 I never saw another one in or out of the shop. It was working for Yamaha that I determined Honda engineering must have been controlled by the marketing department, "we need an arrow pointing to the front forks, invent something". While Yamaha engineering was IMO racing. For example, reed valves, single shock, 2 stroke power valve. So yes eventually I owned a Yamaha. Although Yamaha's darkest hour when the created a BMX bike was the opposite. I believe they needed to get rid of an oversupply of JT1 forks and shocks and put that junk on an overweight BMX pig. The same forks with a spring only on 1 side and oil in both!
As for the JT1, I did have one of my more exciting encounters working on a Mini Enduro. The bike was written up as a no start condition. With anything under 100cc you could check compression, or start with your hand no problem. The bike had compression, so I raised the lift and stood over it to kick start. 1st kick it started, screaming at full throttle because the carb slide was backwards. I went to the kill switch on the right handlebar and was shocked with full high rpm current. So I pulled in the right front brake and clutch and put it into first, hoping I could stall the bike with drag. No such luck, the clutch plates were 100% stuck and the front brake had zero drag. So the bike ran full speed off the lift into a cabinet, laying on it's side over revving until my fellow technician came over with a long screwdriver to pull the spark plug cap. Not sure if I was in shock or just pissed enough to let it burn down.

My first bike was 1972 Yamaha Mini Enduro.... I was 12 years old and this bike was what created a life long passion for riding. I had learned how to ride from my dad when I was about 9 years old on my brothers' Yamaha. My dad, my brother myself rode enduros and other off road events for much of my life. My dad has since passed on, but my brother and I still ride our dirt bikes thanks to our long love of dirt bikes !
Thanks Yamaha for creating the Mini Enduro !

My first ever dirt bike as a kid. Yamaha 60 JT1 (Red version). It was old and Non-Current but I rode the wheels off of that thing (not literally because it was indestructible) . Every day after Football practice, after Basketball practice, after Wrestling practice and everyday of summer I was out riding that thing. Never did a piston & ring job, it started first or 2nd kick every single time. I remember meeting Honda Factory Mini Factory Racer Rick Simmet (Google him) and him looking so crazy at my little Yamaha but we did lap after lap after lap that day. Anything that he did on his Pro Circuit Factory Honda CR80 I did on my little Yamaha 60 JT1 which now when I look back was crazy. Miss that little bike. All that I have left is the Original Owners Manual (missing the front cover) and a Photo of it in our old backyard.

I have just restored a 1974 Kawasaki G4 TR Agricultural bike in Australia that had the same carby choke idle setup as the Yamaha you have. But this bike had dual range gearbox so it had 10 gears all up. An amazing little bike that still ran but was a complete rusty mess. Bought it at a garage sale for $100 Australian and just sold it for $1600.00, pretty much what I put into but it was the process of restoring the bike that I really enjoyed.

When we were kids, we were out riding in the woods. My buddy's bike quit and it didn't look like he was getting spark but it was hard to tell in the midday summer sun. He had the bright idea to hold the plug while I kicked it over. It didn't take me long to realize that it was getting good spark. He made up new curse words.

Brings back memories of my youth, a friend had a gt80 the bigger brother to the jt60 another an xr80 and I had an elsinore 125 and there were a couple mx's. We road forestry roads every where. Not uncommon to put a couple hundred miles on in a weekend. Those older bikes were very reliable and fun as heck for a group of 12yr olds.

My brother bought one as a 13 year old kid, that was in bad shape in 1971, with its 60cc 2 stroke rotary valve engine. I was learning how to built and fix small engines and was able to help him get it running. We took it apart, including the engine. Had to have the engine cylinder bored 20 over, and I was already experimenting with porting engines. We cleaned it up, rebuilt the engine, changed the engine gear to the chain drive, rebuilt and upgraded the clutch springs, and that thing ran very well. Beat a few bikes with bigger engines.😊

In the early 70s my grandfather bought one of these used for my brother and I to learn how to ride with a clutch. We had the old pull cord minibikes before and I was just too small, and that minibike would not run very well. I put more than a few miles on that Yamaha motorcycle. That was my first lessons in learning how to work on a motorcycle. I lived in the hills in Tennessee and would get stuck back on the power lines on that bike. Staring at a hill between me and home. I had to keep a spark plug wrench and tools inside the tool kit. Oh yeah, I always had a problem with the chain coming off . Many smiles and many tears.

I can hear the baffle is gone, it is a substantial powergain, just being gone. Thanks, brought back alot of memories. You see they are bulletproof, still going strong. Probably the original piston and all. Hope you go on and restore it though. These were the first minibike that were a real motorcycle.

Those little bikes also had full street lighting on them. Most people took the lights off and used them for offroad use. That 60cc rotary valve 2-stroke engine is rock reliable too. Gap your points around 0.015" and it should run nicely. Sparkplug should be an NGK B8HS plug.
That little bike rips! Do check the oil injection pump, should be working just fine. Those are pretty foolproof.
Great find, Joe! Thanks for a great video!

Almost as good as the content, are the comments from people who had these things in their childhoods, and this brings up so many fond memories. Makes me want to go get my daughter's little pit bike out of the basement (parked 15 years ago after she crashed it into the trampoline, and would never go near it again). I gave that bike to her when she was 12. After that, I got her a little Suzuki LT80, quad, which she still rides to this day.

That was my first bike in 1974 I had a sunburst head & a stinger pipe. I loved that thing. I have a bike trader ad when I sold it for $150.00.

What an incredibly nice ride. I like the design and the quality. I have had engines like this and they are reliable and easy to tune.

I had 2 of them back in the 90s! A yellow one and a white one! 3 speed trans, manual clutch, wow what fun! My friend and I used to race each other, I was heavy, he was thin and the one that had the stinger made them even if I was on that one. Im talking 60 to 80 lbs heavier I was. One had bad gears so I had them hard welded on the sides and I resized them after. Never had a problem after that. Gears were discontinued, and good luck finding used!

This was my first bike!!! Oh man this video is great Joe! I couldn’t wait to get home from school because I rode it every single day. I wish I never got rid of it.

Great find!! That caught my eye in your last video. I've always had a love for old DT Enduros. I had the GT80 and a slew of YZs and an 84 IT490, but my first bike i ever had was a 72 DT360. I'm excited to see this one!!

Another Great Video Joe, ps. Notice the shop floor needs a shinning, the work area needs a shine, I Notice you like all things to shine, I just happen to Notice your workshop floor is missing its shine, lol of all things for me to Notice. 😊

I cannot help but keep commenting, when she fired up and you revved her. She sounded sooooo sweet.
Go on restore her !!!! The petty tank would be a breeze. Find someone that can match the paint colour. Oh and using a spray gun is so eeee see . I've used one in production when was around 18 yrs old . For petrol tank. I'd use some solvent , to wash petrol residue out.
Use heat gun to remove yammy badge.. so can re glue. Clean all the ole paint off.
Prep for primer and mai colour coats.. then clear lacquer. Before clear lacquer. I'd use a artist paint brush for the black trim effect.. then use some real good spray glue to re fix yammy badge.... at her age and sounding so nice .
    Wow
Treat her to a pamper !!
Oh and speaking of petrol ,, yeah extinguishers are nice... but get a couple of sand buckets... !!! Great for dousing lit fluids... but also absorb the mess too pal

Not sure why I think so but this is a super cool little bike.
I did not realize just how tiny it was until you went to start it and we could see how big you are next to it.
You must have been the coolest kid on the block if you had one of these in the early 70’s. I wonder if this was the bike that was in the movie Bad News Bears.

I have been tuning yamaha’s FS1, 50 years ago here in the Netherlands. They where running at 120 km/h. (75 mph) But these cast iron cilinders had to be re-honed every month.

Super sweet lil bike. A totally mint one sold 2 yrs ago in Vegas for $6270. I wonder how these would do against a RM80 in a short race.
