YES! you have to give up Retinal completely. I am living proof it gave me severe dry eye over 3 years of use. I used a Retin-A prescription for the same amount of time I developed dry eye. I had no clue it was doing this to me. At first I slapped it on my face and very subtly over time I "developed" sensitive eyes to my eye cream, then my face cream the everything starting with red eye's and burning an hr or so after applying my creams. Also it goes into your system as It can cause birth defects. Over time my lid margin became thick on the bottom and top so much that if I wanted to wear eyeliner I would have a white line under my eyelashes because it was so swollen. I had to give up makeup completely. I had extensive dry eye appointments with lipi flow and I am on Xiidra and heat with no reason why you just have dry eye ((( 2 weeks ago I decided for 1 month to stop using the Retin-A and see if my eyes get better, well it's made a huge difference!! the lid margin is so much thinner. Anything I put near my eyes "migrates" and gets in my eyes. I would never put vaseline or anything oily or that won't evaporate near my eyes. Thanks for the info!
i had the issue with vaseline. i would always wake up with irritated dry eyes everytime i tried vaseline around my eyes. Even on my face. It would always find its way to my eyes.
This is brilliant thank you! I have been using a product by Neutrogena that is a specific Retinol cream for the eye. This is quite shocking now I am aware of the risks. It’s great to hear there is a working group focussing on this as this product could very well be causing real harm to unwitting consumers such as me.
Isn’t it crazy how many products marketed for the eye have retinol derivatives in them? I’m hoping the research starts to influence companies to avoid but I’m not counting on it! Super important to spread the word in the meantime!
I use retinol (adapelen cream .1%) and I've mostly tried to avoid the eyelids when applying, but I might have applied there sometimes without noticing. I have dry eyes, but also suffered from it after LASIk surgery, it's just that around 6 months after starting with retinol it has become worse. Is it likely that the cause of the worsening of symptoms is the retinol? I have my doubts since I've never felt any burning or irritation anywhere on my face or around the eyes.
@Eye School with Dr. D: Is there a strong connection between Dry Eye and eye floaters? I've been getting floaters and was wondering if my nightly retinol cream is creating floaters. Thank you!
I been using treinon,,, for awhile all over face undereyes , crows feet, the 11 area , and noticed I'm getting dry eye syndrome wonder if the treinon 0.1. Is causing my dry eyes ?
How about this for a hack. Apply retinol to the 11s BUT cover it with "Frownies" tape afterwards. Then you can still use it, and it won't migrate to the orbital bone.
I had been using prescription tretinoin for some time before recently learning of the connection to dry eyes & MGD. I just had a blocked Meibomian gland & previously had meibomian gland problems. Have dealt with dry eyes for years. My doctor never mentioned anything about retinol usage. I have now stopped using it altogether. Will my eyes improve at all in time or have I done permanent damage?
What about glycolic acid (which is also often used for anti-aging and to build collagen)? I am careful to apply glycolic acid away from the orbital area but whenever I use it my eyes sting like crazy. Is use of this product damaging my meibomian glands? If not, why is it making my eyes sting so bad when it is nowhere near my eyes? I have also tried using aquafor as a buffer but that doesn't seem to help prevent the burning either.
Hi Doc, i’ve read that Vitamin C interferes with melanin production. Does this also apply to the one contained in the beard follicles for example, making it turn white sooner? And what about retinol? It does the same? I already have some whites and i’m worried. Thank you!
@@sandrasorensen8718 It just happened in November after increasing use from 3 times per week to 6. I used tretinoin for only two weeks got the worst sand paper eyes. Stopped now 1 week and they have not improved. Visit to doc today and they told me I have severe dry eyes but glands don’t show damage. Does this mean they just don’t show signs yet of damage and I still could have damaged them or that they are fine and my eyes will improve? To anyone thinking of getting any of these products close to your eyes, it’s not worth it. Note: I stayed far away from eyes but it probably migrated. 😢

I have suffered with DES for years and had just gotten it under control. I was squeezing the last of my Tret gel out of the tube to apply to my face when bam as I squeezed the tube, it shot up in my right eye. A lot. I washed my eye out, but whew. And washed around my eye. But the damage was done, then a few nights later, I was applying a high strength retinal product following a TCA Chemical peel, and what did I do? I got it too high up on my Rt side. I did apply CereVe Healing Ointment directly under my lash line and my brows etc, yet I woke up the next am with my eyes so crusty and yucky. That’s been over a week. And my eyes are so dry, irritated and inflamed. The white of my eyes were so very red for a few days. I had just been in for a F/u appt with my Optometrist. Which she put me on Alrex. I am at a loss as what to do to get my eyes free of severe irritation and dry eyes. Thank you for this video even though it’s several yrs old. Would you please do a video on what products we can use under our eyes even with extremely sensitive dry, dehydrated skin under eyes. Thank you.
What are some SPFs you recommend for around the eyes? The only one that's worked for me is australian gold mineral tinted SPF 50, I don't use it on my face cause the tint stains my clothes. I'm assuming mineral is best, but most sunscreens say to not put close or in contact with eyes, how else am I supposed to protect them when already wearing sunglasses and a hat?
What about eye creams that have RetinAl in them? For instance, the Beauty of Joseon one or Medik8 just came out with their Crystal Retinal Eye Cream which I’m very interested in since I have loved their regular Crystal Retinal for years and even used it in low concentrations around the eye area already with no issues.
What about Skin Better Alpha Ret. Guess not good near eyes either? I have to put ointment in my eyes because of dry eye damage so I quit Retin A and my skin really shows it. I can’t see that ointment being a barrier cream/ if the Retin a hot in it-ouch. I am also supposed to use press and seal to shut my eyes at night because they don’t shut all the way and causes dry eye areas. I’m afraid even with the ointment the Retin A could travel up under the Press snd Seal
what about sunscreen? can we actually put it around eyes? most of them do burn eye, so we can't use them there anyways. but there are the ones specifically for sensetive eyes, can we use them?
my eyes are pretty sensitive but cetaphil sheer mineral face liquid sunscreen spf 50 works well. Does not migrate into my eyes under normal conditions.
I searched so hard for an eye cream without phenoxyethanol, alcohols, parabens, retinol, butylene glycol, anything comedogenic, etc. NOW I'm being informed that rosehip oil is also an ingredient to avoid 💔 does such a product even exist???? What should one use as a safe moisturizer around flaky, eyelids?
I just read that pure rosehip oil has the equivalent retinol strength of 0.00003923% tretinoin. For the sake of doing my best to avoid bad ingredients for the eyes, I'm going to consider my current eye cream, 100% pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream, my safest option on the market. Especially if we take into consideration how the product is not PURE rosehip oil, but rather, mixed in and diluted with other seemingly harmless ingredients. It's practically impossible to avoid ALL of these bad ingredients.

Retinoids in the basic form, not encapsulated, is impactful for *one hour*. It can be washed off before sleeping and tossing and turning so no migration. Why wasn’t this covered?? What am I missing? Other than that most people don’t want to rinse the skincare off. Contact therapy method.
@@lucakat9262 I put some specifics in my post that you can use to look into it. Mostly its down side is that people may wash again with something harsh but it’s not needed. Wash off and apply the evening routine. It can be hard for people to want do this but I don’t think it’s much different from masking. My point above was that if retinoids are so bad for the eyes due to migration during sleep this could have been offered as a compromise to still allow for anti aging and good eye health.

I have lotion on my hands constantly, I touch my face with cream, makeup etc constantly and then because my eyes are always hurting I am trying to massage my lids to make more water/oil so I was transferring (including retin-a probably) to my eyes. I stopped that and I really think that has helped tremendously.
Your really awesome taking the time to reply with some more helpful information. I’m going to try using the Retina as you explained now and see how it goes. It makes me happy that I might be able to continue without bothering my eyes…fingers crossed. I’ve had problems with my eyes for years and just lately I’ve been able to get a handle on it…so it scared me to see the redness starting. I’m also going to look into the other things you mentioned you do for your eyes. It’s cool to know there are things out there that may help other than drops. I’m glad your eyes are doing good because eye problems are so uncomfortable and concerning.
@@27kjh Keep in touch and fill me in if all goes well. The IPL was the most amazing thing I have done for my dry eyes.
Hi Dr, thank you for the video, I do have dry eyes but way back since I was a teenager. Only started using tretinoin this year at age 47. This topic has been very interesting to me. May I know which research is Dr Sullivan referring to? Thank you.
Is it true that retinaldehyde does not cause the same MGD problems as retinol? Some companies are marketing products using this pitch.

Hello doc!! Thanks for the nice info!! What about vitamin E??? Can we use it around eyes??
I started to use retinol this week on my eyelids and let’s just say that I regret this bc now my eyelids are full of little oils glands
Did your eye return to normal? How did you judge if your eye lids's oil glands are full?
@@YinYanUzumaki yes, it did return to normal :) I noticed there were oils glands on my eyelids bc they look like little skin pimples but using a warm cloth and applying to your eyelids will help so much! :)

Thank you so much for this video. Does applying only twice a week (avoiding the eye area) can limit the risk of dry eye ? Thankssss
Took 6 minutes just to finally say "And if you still really want to put it there, here's how: dont." Thank god for the time stamps. Thanks, TH-cam.
she didn't even tell her viewers your quote she just went on to tell them how to use it safely tbh I think she should've straight up said don't use it at all I'm shocked she didn't
Can we use peptide around the eyes? If so, that would be a good replacement of retinol.
My retina! 👁
THANK YOU! So many derms recommend putting tretinoin in eyelids, so this vid was very helpful
First of all, thank you so much for the informative info!!! ❤ Is Bakuchiol ok to apply around the eyes? Thanks in advance!! 😊
I love your example of the sleep mask to illustrate where not to apply retinols! 🙃😍
Duh lol
Yes, stop holy shit
How about this for a hack. Apply retinol to the 11s BUT cover it with "Frownies" tape afterwards. Then you can still use it, and it won't migrate to the orbital bone.
Oooh creative!
Does the retinol serum not drying?! Can it still move if it’s dry
Can you give us an update on if your eyes are any better now?
@Jen Gus how are your eyes now?
What about glycolic acid (which is also often used for anti-aging and to build collagen)? I am careful to apply glycolic acid away from the orbital area but whenever I use it my eyes sting like crazy. Is use of this product damaging my meibomian glands? If not, why is it making my eyes sting so bad when it is nowhere near my eyes? I have also tried using aquafor as a buffer but that doesn't seem to help prevent the burning either.
Interesting. I apply glycolic acid even around my eyes for years and I've never had any issues with it.
Following
Wondering this too does glycolic acid cause dry eye like retinol?
Hi Doc, i’ve read that Vitamin C interferes with melanin production. Does this also apply to the one contained in the beard follicles for example, making it turn white sooner? And what about retinol? It does the same? I already have some whites and i’m worried. Thank you!
Do we know if Bakuchiol has the same effect?
I'm so glad I found this video because I was looking for a reason to never apply my retinol eye cream again.
Frequent use of Retinol cream gave me brown (sun?) spots 😒
you have to be super vigilant with spf if you use retinol otherwise you just end up getting more sundamage
@@sandrasorensen8718 It just happened in November after increasing use from 3 times per week to 6. Luckily the spots are small, one already disappeared after applying licorice root tea extract and discontinuing use of oral vitamin A supplements and the cream.
They should come with a warning so low lQ people don't damage their skin. But then the beauty industry will sell less 'dark spot correctors' bs and lose profit.
I’m just gonna pretend I never seen this video
Hahhahahahahaahaha
I've been using retinol serum for many years until my eyes felt increasingly dry. Eye drops didn't help at all. I suspected that it was the retinol so I stopped using it and my eyes felt so much better.. shame, I love retinol but the dry eyes are torturous
Thx for sharing Doc!!
I actually made a video all about UV exposure! th-cam.com/video/5rET_rMVAKg/w-d-xo.html
Would this be the same advice you would give for the use of Bakuchiol on the face?? thanks :))
yes.
Thank you for the video, very useful
what about sunscreen? can we actually put it around eyes? most of them do burn eye, so we can't use them there anyways. but there are the ones specifically for sensetive eyes, can we use them?
my eyes are pretty sensitive but cetaphil sheer mineral face liquid sunscreen spf 50 works well. Does not migrate into my eyes under normal conditions.
What about rose hip seed oil since it has naturally occurring vitamin a?
Things like rose hip and even Shea butter are on my caution list…there’s not enough evidence to really say.
@@EyeSchoolwithDrD oh no I use shea butter all the time 😮 definitely gonna stop now
I searched so hard for an eye cream without phenoxyethanol, alcohols, parabens, retinol, butylene glycol, anything comedogenic, etc.

Is it safe to use peptides around the eyes?
@WISDOM ELVES what do u suggest
Thank you!
what about retinyl palmitate?
Retinoids in the basic form, not encapsulated, is impactful for *one hour*. It can be washed off before sleeping and tossing and turning so no migration. Why wasn’t this covered?? What am I missing? Other than that most people don’t want to rinse the skincare off. Contact therapy method.
So you only have to put retinol on for an hour at night and then wash it off and go to bed? Is that what you are saying?🤔

I can't handle light and I hate , hate HATE digital screens (And I'm a graphic designer....) Walking barefoot on grass even. Haha. Giving my body more vitamin A (I have been scared of getting too much vitamin A because of the retin a. I don't think one should even take supplements for example when using the cream) BUT I'm no expert, just repeating what I heard online and maybe this is part of my problem, because I was scared of eating too much vitamin A. I also got a humidifier. I have been taking a whole range of different supplements. And... I have to add - I have so so many people praying for me 🙏🏻🙏🏻and my eyes. But I am amazed at how much better my eyes are feeling. So yes, I have down scaled on the Retin-A as well. Dry eyes is a horrible thing and I am pulling out ALL THE GUNS to make it better! I had an Ayurvedic check up where they read my nadi ( energy channels in the body ) and said my body is not producing enough bile but it also seems that it will be a long battle for me but I am hopeful . Good luck in your journey to healthier skin and eyes 😊
