1973 Honda ATC70 Buyers Guide: Comparing a Survivor to a Fixer-Upper to a Professionally Restoration

  • Since I found myself in possession of 3 1973 Honda ATC 70's, I thought it was a good opportunity to to some comparisons between what I would consider a "Survivor Quality" machine, vs. a "Fixer-Upper Quality" machine, vs. a "Professionally Restored" machine. Ultimately, it all depends on what your goal is an what you're after.
So we do a little story telling, a little analyzing, some comparing and at the end of it I'm not where where we end up, but I feel like we learned some stuff! Would you agree??
I ask the question about why the K0 and K1 nomenclature in this video. I reached out to Mike Palmgren at Vintage Motorsports and he tells me the following.- "Honda used this system in the late 60s and early 70s. It was just a way of designating a first run of a particular model and every time they did a change to that model it added a number. The only two ATCs to use this was the US90 from 1970-75 and the 73-74 ATC70. By the late 70s and on they did away with this prefix. On the US90 they ran the exact same design and model for multiple years back then so rather than get confused with a model year, the prefix told you its the same like a 70-71 US90 is a K0 its the first of that model and there was no changes in 71. Models like the CT70 they ran the K0 was from 1969-71, no changes but most models had a change year by year and the number just went up each year you never year see anything past a K5 or so."
So there you have it. Also I mention my good buddy and fellow TH-camr MRC Builds. Find his channel by clicking this link and make sure you subscribe while you're there! / mrcbuilds

The flame job always blows me away on these but after watching this video, I get it now. Its part of the marketing for kids, make a machine look like a toy. Love it ! Really fun video, Thanks Preston !

I miss that bike!! Glad it went back to you. Just to set the record straight on the restoration. Travis Gisclair did that for me. Did an amazing job and did it to my spec which was to not go overboard and that I did not require it to be a perfect match to original. He was more than capable of making it perfect but it was I that kept it from happening. Great job Travis!!!!! Another great episode by the way

I’ve got a super nice survivor that came out of a guys basement. I think the coil is on backwards on the restored trike. The bracket on the carb/intake of the survivor is correct. Both throttle cable and on/off switch wire should be on the left side. The sticker on the air box cover is correct. They should all have an exhaust shroud on the head pipe in front of the right foot peg. Hope this helps.

    Last time I saw a 1973-74 orange Act 70 was back in 1978-79 ,
then my dad bought me a 1979 ,, never saw the first gen. In person sense then..
    Always wanted the 1973-74
Act 70 and Act.90 in the orange color.

Seems like the restored one has a different carburetor or at least the petcock. the fuel line ports are different from the other two hence the different fuel line routing. All three are nice machines, Thank you for the content!
