Horne is- in my opinion - the best singer in the last 40 years of the 20. Century. Of course- there where Sutherland, Callas, Caballe, Price - but Horne had sung everything- she knows exactly what so can do with her voice. And when she sings- you can feel the pure joy to sing for uns- even its hard work- sie geniesst es- the obly singer which can fell us the same feeling is Luisa Tetrazzini... Horne is OVERWHELMING- the Queen of Opera
This is the way its done! For me, its the definitive version. Ms. Horne has complete mastery over her instrument. These days, countertenors have taken the part of Bertarido which many claim is better as the part was written for castrati. I disagree....it should be sung by who can sing it the best...and Ms. Horne is the best of the best.
Historians point out the Handel never used a male alto if he couldn't get a castrato; instead he used a female singer. On the other hand, I believe the best modern countertenors (Fagioli, Jaroussky) have a beauty of sound that was unknown in male trebles even 30 years ago. But no man singing falsetto will ever have the power of Horne.
The 19th century saw the elevation of sopranos and lower voiced women relegated to crones witches maids etc .But 17th and 18th women sang male characters. Counter tenor contralto castrati: overlapping deployment. . Many claims that particular arias were intended for castrati have been disproved
I never heard this rendition before, but must say it is stupendous. I DO like men like David Hansen or Franco Fagioli singing this bravoura piece too, BTW.
I like Lea Desandre best now for Handel (for pure authenticity and stage presence) but she hasn't the power of Marilyn. I thought I liked counter-tenors but after listening to "real" singers I prefers proper mezzos (mezzi? Can an Italian help me here?). Have you listened to Rusell Oberlin's version on TH-cam - absolutely no falsetto there.
Thank you very much for posting this marvelous document. "Jacky" was in very good conditions. We can't say the same for the oboist, which was in a bad day...
@@abcdefgh-db1to LOL nope. He couldn't compare to Ms. Horne's technique and the youtube vid of him attempting this is beyond pathetic....he has no idea what the text means and no idea he is singing a vengeance aria.
@@baritonebynight Horne's technique ? She has one of the worst technique ever, she is nasal as can be. Russell Oberlin is far from perfect but he is very much better than her. If you want to listen to a real mezzo, go listen to Oralia Domingez
Marilyn is simply an 'A lister' - huge incredible voice, irreplaceable - I never want my money back!!!!
The great Marilyn Horn. I grew up on her fantastic career. Great, powerful voice with great articulation. I also miss James Levine.
How well I remember this concert when it aired on PBS! I later went to see her and Samuel Ramey perform this Opera at Lincoln center. Superb.

always the best mezzo. Excelente in all her performances.

Marvelous use of ornamentation in the repeated section.

Of course, it is a part for a man. Too bad there are no more castrati ... then again thank goodness ;)
This got me through prelims. Repeated listening.
I remember this concert like it was yesterday. She and Price are the best

Marilyn is the best and I love her too. The voice is of great quality. And if Handel was still alive, he would approve totally.

What's that oboe squawk at 5:08-9?? Ouch. Otherwise, Horne is perfection.
