phantomsmom1 Possibly this was the Ed Sullivan Show. He was one of the last from the time that USAmerican television was replete with Culture, Science, Art, Music and more. Perhaps you are not old enough to remember. Like USAmerican education...... all art and music departments have disappeared in most of the schools across the nation. My quite young father bought a television 1948, I was nearly 2. I don't remember what was on then but I do remember as of the early 50's. There was of course silly programs and children's programs but there was also an enormous variety of programming. Live mostly but then filmed. Nearly everything was educational of some type. I watched live plays, ballet, opera, science programs, astronomy, mathematics all made very interesting. There were university debates which I probably did not fully understand but the sheer excitement teams of students made the prospect of learning thrilling. There were also intelligent discussion programs with some of the great minds of the time and true journalism with reporters that were actually brilliant and had travelled the world. Not like the plastic barbie and ken types that now flood every network who are idiots and no nothing about real journalism. Alas it all went. The low minds that took over wanted to appeal to the masses who were the small minds who would by any rubbish they were sold so there were ever more advertisements and ever lower mentality programs. It has been a tragedy for the States and the turning of a valuable tool into something quite destructive to the society.
The thrill of listening to these two magnificent singers has never abated since I first heard this area many decades ago. And until I die I will never tire of listening to the sheer perfection that these ladies displayed. I have heard most of their recordings of this duet and also many other recording of other singers including Callas. And while I will not be unfair as to the brilliance of many other duets there is simply nothing the comes close to the magic that was Sutherland/ Horne. Certainly they were the last of their kind. There are no other names that dominate as we once had up to the late 20th Century. Everything now is manufactured and marketing. Sutherland, Horne, Callas, Tebaldi, Flagstaad, and their male counterparts became famous not with marketing but because they had genius talent and dedicated their entire lives to their Art. Thank you for this reminder of what we had and most likely will never come again. Not to mention that this is the last minutes of any culture on usa television. The dumbing down process had already begun in the 60's but was not completed until mid to late 70's.
I was a teenager. I knew Sutherland's voice from her Art of the Prima Donna recording. I couldn't think of anything else for months leading up to the performances in October of 1963. I bought a ticket for opening night - their very first performance of this opera. Sutherland sounded a bit nervous in Casta Diva (compared to the recording I had). I found out later that she had been ill during rehearsals. I still remember the high E flat at the end of 'In mia man'. Horne was someone new to all of us. When she sang her opening line in a pianissimo from upstage it seemed the whole audience stopped breathing! Years later when I was getting into the opera business I got to try on the brick red cloak which was in the cover photo of her first recording of Norma - made with the other 3 leads from the Vancouver production.
There is no other recording that comes close to this moment of perfection; their fond close relationship combined with two extraordinary voices at their peak, are a transcendent experience. So beautiful it gives me goose bumps followed by tears.
Marilyn once said of Joan in an interview after she had retired, "I want you to know that in all the years we worked together, Joan and I never had a cross word with each other." That had me tearing up.
The accuracy in this is just amazing. Some people might argue that it lacks emotion but I think this is exceptional. Definitely the version that gives me the most thrills. Their voices are like bread and butter. Made to go together.
This is from "The Ed Sullivan Show." I know because I saw the original broadcast. I didn't know much about opera and didn't like what little I knew. And I remember being absolutely stopped in my tracks when I heard this music, sung by these two women. Sounds cliche, but this broadcast changed my life. I was hooked from then on, especially to bel canto and to Sutherland.
so beautiful so heavenly angelic marvelous vibrato that cannot be really described My Precious MOTHER is in heaven she had a heavenly voice went to Peabody school of music her voice teacher told her she had great promise but she gave up her dream got married had 10 children directed our church choir for 50 years this lovely music makes me feel connected to her somehow May GOD bless U for sharing this
i love to hear both singers they are so pure and they have a good way to do it , i dont see that anymore , maybe i am making a mistake , but i am so used to hear like the divas in the past .
АХ! Какой великолепный дуэт!! Слушаешь, с огромным удовольствием, этих оперных Див! Восторг и восхищение их необыкновенным мастерством!!! БРАВО!!! БРАВО!!! БРАВО!!!
Marilyn sings the opening section so effortlessly, and her facial expressions mirror her role as Norma's handmaiden. Dame Joan is proud and erec, and she listens to her servant with rapt attention. It really doesn't get any better than this. Thanks so much for posting!
certo che la signora joan sutherlan pensava proprio di poter cantare tutto. La sua voce era troppo piccola per quel ruolo. Horne magnifica. Come sempre
This is just perfection. I saw them in these roles in 1967 and it was the most magical evening of my life.
I'm truly jealous.
I bet.
To think that American TV used to bring us beautiful & stirring entertainment like this! Joan & Marilyn - may your voices live forever!
phantomsmom1 It really crushes the soul to understand that this no longer occurs.
phantomsmom1 Nicki minaj
Sandrine Anterrion lol

pro trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
How can this be 50 years ago ... such stunning beauty is timeless
😇
This must be one of the greatest duets of our time. Neither one upstaging the other. Bravo girls !!
You're right
Lucky we have camera now. And could record masterpieces.

I am honored and was honored to have met both of them.
I was in the audience the first time they performed Norma together - here in Vancouver 1963. What a beautiful memory!
Tell us more about it, please!

What do you do?
I really envy you
I remember being in the audience at the Met NYC for their magnificent performance , absolutely unforgettable!
Extraordinary performance, and it's extraordinary that I am able to watch this on TH-cam, so many decades later!
They can sing in precise and absolute sync. Incredible.
There is no other recording that comes close to this moment of perfection; their fond close relationship combined with two extraordinary voices at their peak, are a transcendent experience. So beautiful it gives me goose bumps followed by tears.
Their close relationship made the world of difference
Same

Two of the GREATEST EVER
The accuracy in this is just amazing. Some people might argue that it lacks emotion but I think this is exceptional. Definitely the version that gives me the most thrills. Their voices are like bread and butter. Made to go together.
Like Joan once said about Marilyn, "Our voices just clicked."
Bravissima!!
I love the unhurried, almost languorous tempo, like they have all the time (and breath) in the world.
I will never forget the voice of Joan Sutherland, my first time was 1976 in Amsterdam, I have been hooked on Norma ever since
Considering the combined talents of these incredible operatic divas this could never be bettered
true beauty of the voice, smooth timbre, registers are smoothed, listening and heart is pleasant
Difficult to sing better than these exceptional artists. Their voices are amazing and match perfectly.

Exactly why it was so important such cultural things were broadcast in such a venue. I love it when art ambushes us and takes us by surprise
Most people hear 'opera', think 'Butterfly' and 'Wagner' and go through life oblivious to Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini, and Rossini, more's the pity.
Beauty, the duet just melts into each other, simply wonderful
5:38 favourite part!!!!! immaculate staccatos, with a soft attack and perfect coordination. MAGIC
There is no one today who can sing these roles so well. Joan and Marilyn sang it brilliantly.
Wonderful duet. I am glad Ms Horne is still with us.
Still with us and very much still working as a teacher!
honestly this is the best performing and singing that I've ever watched. Im stunned
We are so fortunate to have/had these two. We will never see legends of opera like these two ladies ever again sadly.
What could be more beautiful?
Now I understand symbiosis perfectly! Stupendous!
How Magical It was to be in attendance right there in the audience. Heaven!
Love, love, love this 😍
Like butter on toast......such perfection.
I heard this live during the Met Tour. It was something one does not forget.

Great harmonizing by Ms. Horne and Dame Joan.
Sublime. Old-fashioned, somewhat ridiculous and completely beautifully sublime.
Two of the best,.. of all time.
Oh Lord...Those staccatos!!!
certo che la signora joan sutherlan pensava proprio di poter cantare tutto. La sua voce era troppo piccola per quel ruolo. Horne magnifica. Come sempre
