Horne was the gold standard for Rossini contraltos. And to think that earlier in her career, she sang Puccini and Wagner and Berg! But Bonynge heard much more in her vocal abilities, and hired her to sing with Sutherland in Bellini and Rossini. That’s when Horne found her true metier. I’m lucky to have seen her onstage many times, including Semiramide and Rinaldo, along with a few roles that weren’t her strong suit, like Eboli.
"Puccini and Wagner and Berg! Oh, my!" : ) She "found her true metier." I guess you could say that would account for her "metieric" rise in the world of opera! hahahahahaha
There will NEVER be anyone like Dame Joan and Ms. Horne. They came from the old school and they were close to absolute perfection in bel canto. We do not have anyone like them now. No one will devote the years needed to be this great!
I went to Ms. Horne's 75th birthday recital at Carnegie Hall hosted by Flicka and Sam Ramey. By that time, Ms. Horne has stopped performing classical music. It featured many singers singing Ms. Horne's repertoire that she performed during her classical career. There were some amazing singers there....but none could come close to what Ms. Horne did with any of the pieces.
Wonderfull these words of great love for MH. Im with all these loving people. The art of MH is stupendo. 4 (four) octaves. I would give a lot of money to know how she solved the registration. Could had been an adventure Her warm voice spreads warm feelings every time listening singing
I heard her live four times between 1997 and 2000, and was so inspired that I went to music school to become a singer. I never became a big star, but I owe the career I do have to Ms. Horne's inspiration.
Sublime.

Such depth in that wonderful voice along with a superb command and a lovely coloratura
LA DIVINA!!!
There has been no singer who was definitively greater than she. I am so honored to have gotten to learn from her.

😂❤Вечная, светлая память выдающейся певице всех землян , Мерлин Хорн. 😅😊
Absolument génial de technique et de puissance.
La messa di voce su "Elena", nell incipt dell aria, rappresenta un punto altissimo dell arte del Belcanto. Maestria assoluta!
Nobody can do it like Ms. Horne!
The greatest mezzo ever!

What was her voice like live?
Ascoltata 27 volte...che Dio la Benedica...Sempre.
Sublime. There's no other word for it.

Unparralled technique..perfection.

Breathtaking! Brava, dear lady! : )

Обожнюю!!!!
Marilyn at the height of her operatic powers...NO ONE sang this better! Made all the better with Richard Bonynge conducting!
Agreed!! :-)
(PS - Richard Bonynge is not 'Sir' Richard - he has never been knighted - although of course he *should* be!)
Eh about Richard. Kind of a bitter old man
Like yourself?
😎😎😎
yikes! Everything was perfect that night. The General is staggering here in complete control of every facet of her large coloratura arsenal.
Way more than like!
She pulled out ALL the stops that evening! I'd have given a limb to see it LIVE!
