    Imported Red Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) are an invasive ant species in the southern United States. They kill other native/beneficial ant species, endangered ground-nesting birds, and send people to hospitals. These ants are harmful to the ecology of Florida as well as many other southern states.

    Is there a reason you held the aluminum block over the heat for awhile before putting it in the crucible?

    • @NolansAnthillCastings
      @NolansAnthillCastings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yes, there are two reasons. Everything, even if it doesn’t look like it, has moisture on the surface, especially in Florida, and if you were to submerge that moisture in the liquid metal it could easily explode and splash metal all over you. The second reason is thermal shock. If you put a cold piece of metal into a hot crucible it would freeze the molten metal inside and then it could also crack the crucible if it touches the walls of the crucible. I’ve had a small crucible crack straight down the middle from doing that before. So, basically pre heating it gets rid of moisture and reduces the chance of thermal shock.

    Make yourself a grate that you can lay metal on to preheat it. Holding it by the tongs is too short of time. You risk slipping the cold metal dropping in the molten metal and having a violent explosion. Seen it happen.

      I’d be careful about pouring in clay. Normal soil allows steam/pressure to escape through it. Clay does not and might explode on you sending molten aluminum everywhere.
