  • Aluminum casting of a Fire Ant nest.

    Imported Red Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) are an invasive ant species in the southern United States. They kill other native/beneficial ant species, endangered ground-nesting birds, and send people to hospitals. These ants are harmful to the ecology of Florida as well as many other southern states.

    I was digging in the dirt as a child, and wasn’t aware I dug into a fire ant nest, until they all started biting. It was agony for me, and seeing what you’re doing here makes me so happy.

    Hey Nolan, the algorithm brought me along. The effect you are describing when spraying down the casting is called the Leidenfrost effect. It's a really neat result of hot and cold things mixing together. Have fun!

    Sir, have you ever considered using a Zinc alloy??
    Zinc pours at a lower temp and molten Zinc is much thiner than Aluminum.
    I think you will get deeper penetration and finer detail with the Zinc.
    I get all of my alloys from Rotometals.

    • @NolansAnthillCastings
      @NolansAnthillCastings  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t like messing with zinc. The fumes aren’t good for you if you get the furnace too hot and it’s just more expensive. I get all my aluminum for free by scrapping stuff.

    • @mookinbabysealfurmittens
      @mookinbabysealfurmittens ปีที่แล้ว

      +1, molten zinc fumes are super bad to breathe. Tin/pewter is safe, though. But verify purity!
      P.S. I'm sure you're aware, Mr. Ant-nest Caster (beautiful work, btw) but for any folks considering: drink cans (soda, beer, & wine?!) are lined with plastic inside. So if y'all use em, just be careful cos awful fumes. (Hi, I'm new. I'm a worry-wart. I'm sure you know what you're doing, Ant Nest Caster - I'm really sorry I don't know your name!)

    We could have used you a couple months ago. I had the exterminators coming every week because more and more hills kept popping up. Finally after some heavy chemicals they got them under control. Aluminum would have been more interesting.

  • @RickHowell89

There were 4 of us and we didn't realize that the ants were in the bales and before long all 4 of us were coming out of our pants. I HATE those damn fire ants.
