These SECOND HAND DRIVERS ARE THE EXACT PROOF that golf DOESN"T HAVE TO BE EXPENSIVE

  • Can golf be made cheaper!! in recent video i found out that so many golf clubs are losing members and the biggest thing to affect this was the COST and the increase across the board to do with golf and golf memberships. So i have gone out their and found drives over the last 5 years and i'm seeing if the technology in these drivers can still compete with the BRAND new drivers of today!
So in this test Alex elliott golf tedsts:
    1. Cobra f9
    2. Cobra SZ
    3. Cobra RAD speed
    4. Cobra LTDX
which will come out on top and which will be the BEST cobra driver of the last 4 years? Can second hand drivers be proof that golf doesn't have to be expensive? lets putt all these to the test and on average see what one ois longest!

*What would do? NEW OR SECOND HAND?*

I've done both. My current driver is a radspeed that I bought "new" as a lightly used demo that was discounted when the ltdx came out. Not planning on an upgrade for a few years.

This is my thought process. I only buy a new driver about every 5-6 years. I just picked up a super clean F9 head w/ head cover for $125 shipped. Got the shaft I wanted locally, and now I have a top of the line driver for under $200.

2nd hand for drivers for me.
    I've only used preowned.
The depreciation is insane for brand new drivers. I picked up an excellent condition epic max with evenflow shaft for 190 euro. Its longer than my previous driver 2018 rogue. But the off centre hits are way more forgiving. Typically I spend 50-80 euro upgrading my drivers.
It takes a bit of patience and understanding what it is your looking for.

I picked up a slightly used RadSpeed XB driver for $200 shortly after the release of the LTDs. It's not any longer than the F6+ it replaced, but it sounds 100% better.

I use a Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic, which came out in 2017, and that I bought used in 2019 (for a nice discount). I recently tried the new Titleist TSR2 and TSR3. I *loved* them; the look, sound, and feel were spectacular. However, I did the ball no further with the new Titleists than I do with a 5 year old Callaway. I saved myself $600.

I got my Speedzone direct from Cobra in June 2020. The ball jumps off the face. I love it! Its has great ball speed off the face. It's sound is different. I also still bag my 9 deg 2004 titanium
Mizuno Tzoid for a lower drive apex( windy courses). I fell in love with a mat colored Radspeed at Academy other day and its only $199. The Speedzone may go to my son....lol

I still have the F9 in white with the matte top in my bag. I love it, it is still performing great, and I have no desire to take it out unless it breaks. Possibly if the club starts to show wear or the new tech is vastly superior I'd consider a new one. Would definitely stick with Cobra for certain.

Yeah, recently, last year...I bought a Callaway Epic Flash driver used, that looked like new for 1/3 of what it sold for new. I am old but I can still pound it! Love it! The adjustable hosel is genius. Plus you can get different shafts if you want and they will screw right on. Easy peesy change.

I got fitted for the LTDx LS end of last year. I put a Wishon S2S Red 65S shaft in it. It's a beast. Past seasons I have bought used drivers. Best driver I bought used was the M1 2017 440.
Manufactures today don't focus so much on distance, but more on forgivness (Not side dispersion, that's the players fault). The focus is more on maintaining ball speed and retain lower spin on off-center hits.

I’ve just bought a second hand rad speed and love it! (Upgraded from a fly z cobra). You had the speed zone set up as low spin with the weight forward, but the rad & F9 weight back. I noticed the sound really changes with the weight forward. Would of been good to see them all weight forward to be lower spin like the LTDX

I picked up XR16 irons £140 spotless, driver, 3w,7w for £90 I did pull the shafts and put in pulled stif flex shafts my self for £50! 4 vokey wedges £80 60,56,52,48 degree , 2 ball putter £25, new super stroke grip £10. Local pro shop had zip busted waterproof bag £30! £425 intotal. Driver is fitted with tensi blue tipped shaft, 44inch. Set draw 9.5degree, goes 250-265 yards but dead straight. I have a SIM 2 driver same shaft and length. SIM2 is the exact same dry ball readings. Same applies to fairway woods. 4 years difference of technology/ marketing same performance.

Im still using the Cobra ZL Encore I bought brand new in 2012. I went on a hiatus where I maybe put in two rounds a year for 6-8 years. This driver doesn't really have super high miles on it, but needless to say I am looking to upgrade to something much newer. I don't have the budget to buy brand new at the moment and I am certainly not opposed to buying used clubs so long as they are in great condition. Great videos. keep it up.

Im rockin a Callaway RAZR X Black from 2012 and when I get a good strike the trackman says 280 total 260 carry w/ 105 clubhead speed. I am of the opinion that right now I would rather spend the money on rounds and driving/ lessons practice before I buy a nice new driver.

These tests are all well and good. However the shaft is as important as the head. Most drivers come with regular or stiff as standard and those are often not the best combo for your game. I recently tried the the latest top males and it wasn’t until I swapped the shaft to a counter balanced shaft that I hit is straight and long

I’m still gaming an old Cobra ZL driver from around 2010 with a stiff mid kick voodoo shaft. I swear sometimes I think the club is illegal. It goes 20-30 yards further than anything else I can find. For me it’s literally all about confidence. Over the ball I just feel like I’m going to rip it every time. It’s nearly perfect. I’ve found if I use some of the old hard as a rock two piece low spin distance balls they roll down the fairway forever. If I catch one dead center of the face I’m longer than I’ve been in my life. I’ve been playing since 1972 and I’m 63.

Ive been buying one or two generations old for a few years now. My requirement is that the head looks new. I have two shafts that work great for me (Hzrdus Black RDX and GraphDesign Tour AD Di). So i can buy the used driver with any shaft/grip at the best prices i can find, then install my preferred shaft. Sell my older driver head with the unwanted shaft. Cost of uprade is less than $100.
It works great, and saves a ton.

I always buy used, a model or two old from latest. The problem is you need to make sure it is in good condition (Club head, shaft, grip, and accessories) with no issues. Makes it harder to get exactly what you are looking for. I am a mid hcp player. But like you said it is a lot more affordable

I have just picked up a RAD Speed driver, new old stock, which is one that they still had in stock, new but older. I think incredible deals are to be had if you by a year or two back that are new. I am hanging up a Callaway XR16 that has served me well, still has life in it, I just think that 8 years of advancements I should see an improvement in my driving. Alex when you switch drivers what do you do to figure them out as they all have changes...maybe a subject for a video.

Don't want to buy used but I would and have bought a new last gen. I will say, from what I've seen over the years with Cobra drivers is something you spoke to a little. It's not the distance or ball speed that's getting better. There are limits placed on that. It's the stability of the driver or forgiveness/accuracy that is what's improved. Especially the jump from SZ to RAD speed.

Year over year there is not much difference in performance so I was building my bag I waited until the next years model comes out then buy the previous model directly from the manufacturer. For example, when the F9 driver was $500 brand new. I waited until the speed zone came out and the price of a brand new F9 dropped to $200 and because I bought it from Cobra they threw in a Puma Bluetooth speaker.

😂love that comparison so pleased that the older model still holds its own personally I wouldn’t pay for brand new as the tolerances are still the same as years ago ie face thickness size of head and such like I think golfers are better off maybe changing the shaft to suit their swing speed and tempo after all the shaft is the engine that drives the ball the lump of metal or carbon at the end is basically the same from 20 years ago apart from a bit of tinkering with weight positioning I’ve had the same titleist head from years ago but changed the shaft as I get older and slower I’m still there or there abouts with my regular 4 ball who seem to buy new every 18 months

Just purchased an F9 new for less than 1/2 the price of LTDX. Can’t fault it. My focus is always on the best shaft for my swing. Get that right, and the head makes little difference. Go F9!!!

As an EDGA player and being supported by Cobra #disabilityinsport I changed drivers in October to the ltdx ls and love it, only changed due to the support very little performance difference from my previous TSI2 Driver

Do you not think that the shaft which remained the same is the biggest plus point?

my son (11) is using the SZ 12deg std, I just exploded my RAD speed xd. Looking for another one, i cant fault a driver that explodes after smashing 280m + drives for years...

I'm less likely to buy a set of used golf clubs than I would a used car. I have no idea why. I feel like there's bad mojo attached to the clubs or something. Witchcraft, possibly even cursed.

The way to make the F9 go further?
Warm up with 15 drives with the other models.
You got progressively better with each club.

Been using a TM M2 driver for some time, don’t feel any loss of distance.

Funny enough, I actually went from the F9 to the standard LTDx for the added forgiveness and consistency.

I used the F9, which was excellent. Until last year when I upgraded to the LTDx. Love it!
I'm not sure this is a completely fair test. Shouldn't you be using the shafts issued with each of these drivers too?

The shaft is the engine of the club so it only makes sense to use your shaft in every head tested. That's how you get true results.

    • @fat-shotgolf2937
      @fat-shotgolf2937 ปีที่แล้ว

@Robert Johnson true, but someone was buying one of these clubs 2nd hand, it's highly likely the club would have the shaft it was originally sold with.

@@gemeni69 The shaft is the transmission that transmit the energy from the engine (you) to the head.

@@fat-shotgolf2937 all this is true but if your testing heads for yourself to see how they stand in order you would use the same shaft not jump in between different shafts

@@gemeni69 if one could, it would be excellent. I've found the shaft in my LTDx is much better for me than the shaft in my F9

I just got a Demo LTDx for $220... and I got to use a gift card I had gotten so it only cost me actually $70 of my actual money. The giftcard kind of ran me into getting last years than any other previous but I changed from a Nike Covert from back in the day.

As long as COR limits remain the same, all they can do is improve feel and dispersion.

I’m still using the M2 2016 and haven’t really found anything that improves very much on it for that combination of accuracy, distance and forgiveness. Suspect eventually the face will fail and not looking forward to that day!

Last time I bought a new club was 2007. My mizuno mp60s. Which I still play today. Meanwhile my hcp has dropped from 18 in 2007 to 4 now. New clubs are just a marketing ploy. Lessons and playing are what make your game improve. But that’s my opinion and marketing wins for most mug golfers.
