The most iconic American boot there is, the Red Wing Iron Ranger is massively popular and, well, pretty darn expensive. After a recent price jump to $350, is this classic boot still worth it? After five years of working in the boot industry, I've worn the boot hard and come to a point where I can confidently assess its durability and compare it to its top competitors. For an American made, Goodyear welted boot, it's hard to find better.

I was gifted a freshly-soled pair of Rangers when I told my cobbler that I've never had a boot before.
I was extremely touched and have never felt more solid with each step. Been wearing them for 2 weeks straight and they're already broken in like a glove. True to size for me.
I gave my cobbler a fat tip and will continue sending him my pairs. Very appreciative.

I got a pair of Iron Rangers last year for winter since the winter in the PNW wasn't too bad and love them, I got the black pair and they look and feel amazing.
I was surprised how comfortable they are but yes, the break in was a bit tough and blistered my feet so I had thicker socks on. Sizing is correct to go down, my pair are 10 1/2 when I'm normally a euro size 44 in most shoes ( so 11-12 depending on the brand)

I’m a diesel mechanic and use iron rangers for work boots. Until now my work hasn’t required safety toes. They work great but I cant wear them in winter due to the slick soles. I live in Alaska so the ground is covered in snow for 5-6 months a year. I would immediately buy an set of iron rangers with V100 soles and a safety toe if they ever made a pair. Hell, even just a steel toe would warrant a purchase since that’s the only way I can work in them now. I really like the fit of the upper end and once the insole molds to my foot that part gets pretty comfy, too. I would like a little more arch support on the inner side of the insole, though. My first pair lasted a couple years before needing a resole, which I have yet to do. The insole is so nice on them! The leather is also really softened up so they’re like wearing sneakers. If it werent for the cork chunking out and making them feel lumpy I’d still wear them for now. A year ago I bought a new pair and they’re pretty broken in. The sole is just starting to show some wear and the insole is molding to my foot pretty well. I’ve been wearing them since may this year and alternate between them and a couple pairs of whites I also wear at work.

Same. Half size down for me constricted my entire foot with *barely* enough room for my toes length wise. Even broken in, thick socks would've been almost impossible. True to size here as well, except on some of their work lasts. Nothing like trying them all on in person.

Bought 6 pairs of Thursdays and had to send back 6 pairs… 4 due to sizing and I am still convinced what I kept is off. 2 pairs due to the toe sole separating from the boots after 2-3 days.
Bought 1 pair of Iron Rangers and WOW! Secure firm fit with a better fit everyday. Solid construction. Way more comfortable. No slip in fit. For me it was worth the extra $150 for these.
All look good and the clown toe on mine doesn’t look like what I thought. Looks really nice!
Glad I went Iron Ranger to fit and feel both. Both great boots, perhaps I just got a bad batch of Thursdays.

Putting Huberds Shoe Grease on work boots does not ruin the boot... maybe it ruins your mind, but not the boot.
Most people who wear work boots to do actual work buy their boots because of their jobs uniform requirements, so they choose black or brown... those who have no dress code requirements are not going to care if their brown boots got browner. When I was a Plumber and wore brown Red Wing Supersoles everyday for foot protection and durability, boot cosmetics did not matter.
I get it though... if you only wear boots for the style, then dark brown boots might hurt your feelings.

    • @patrickmiao1698
      @patrickmiao1698 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Huberds Shoe Grease darkens the boots considerably, not a look everyone wants. That's why they make conditioners like Bicks 4. For work boots sloshing around s**t water everyday, boots cosmetics don't matter, actually, the shoe grease actually helps to hide the s**t stains.

I'm also a fan of the Red Wing Shoe Cream. Does a very good job of softening and conditioning. And, doesn't create the waxy bloom that I see with Venentian Shoe Cream. It leaves more of a matte finish rather than a shiny finish.

One thing for anyone who is hesitant to pay full price for this iron ranger 8111 is that it is the most commonly bought red wing heritage boot. eBay is littered with tons of used pairs that are close to new because folks buy the wrong size and decide to not return them to red wing corporate for whatever reason. You can easily save half of your money this way, but you just need to be aware of eBay's policies on returns and seller/buyer fees. If it is too good to be true, it probably is. That's my take on the price, please do your homework before choosing a size.

I think you can't return them once you've worn them outdoors - only if there's a construction defect. I almost got talked into getting the wrong size by the shop assistant. " go one size down from your shoe size " he insisted.... I tried them...painfull, I knew they were simply yoo tight and would never fit no matter how much " breaking in " was done. I insisted he let me try the next size up. They were stiff as you'd expect from a new work boot - but I knew they fit !
Be absolutly sure these things fit. It's a lot of money to waste if you can't wear them.

Great video. Sizing is key to comfort with this boot. I had an unfortunate experience where I had the wrong size. I even went into the store, was sized using their 3D device, tried 3 different sizes, and went with a full size down initially. I am a 12 D. I went with an 11 D based on the recommendation of the sales rep. After about a week of trying to break in, it was too tight. I had significant heel, arch, ball pain and the 3rd toe started rubbing on the inside of the toe cap. The store manager was gracious to give me a one time courtesy exchange to an 11.5 D. I tried it on and felt instant relief. Now 3 weeks later, the boot is breaking in beautifully, molding to my foot, flexing and softening up. I have the Copper R+T and could not be happier. I will buy another pair in either the Blacksmith or the IR in a different color. I will start using cedar shoe trees now. I have not yet conditioned the boots. I have RW branded accessories. I have no doubt the boots will condition well and last a long time. I am not as concerned about color change as some are. I kind of like my boots a little darker as they tend to lighten up and dry out anyway. No one can go wrong with these boots.. They are dress casual yet rugged enough to be very versatile.

I love Red Wing. Of late I've went down the PNW boot rabbit hole. So I tend to wear White's and Nick's more than any other brands. That being said, I do own two pairs of Red Wings (My Blacksmiths and my 1907s, both in copper rough and tough). I still love my Red Wing boots and still wear them from time to time. For that price, they make an outstanding boot IMO. Red Wings were my first quality boot that I'd ever tried. I always wore cheaper, lower quality boots till I started wearing my 1907s. The difference was night and day once I made the switch. They will always be one of my all time boot brands.

I made the same mistake with my previous boots; over-conditioned it to that dull dark color. To restore the color I did the following (caution: might affect the leather quality)
    1. Wash it dish soap / saddle soap
    2. After drying, wipe the leather with acetone. Repeat until the leather becomes pale / light-colored.
    3. To restore the color, you can dye it but over the years I found that just applying shoe CREAM will be enough for mild color restoration. Buff afterwards.

I keep hearing about a boot being resolable as a selling point but whenever I look into it, resoling basically costs just as much as buying a new pair. I haven't been able to find someone that resoles for less than 250$, but often they charge 350+

Consider also that you might be walking too hard. If you’re used to really foamy sneaker soles you probably heel strike like there’s no tomorrow. Learn to walk on your mid foot a bit and there will be lots of benefits. You may have to shorten your stride, but consider that army marching stride is only about a foot long and 120 bpm and you might start to see that it could be a more efficient way of walking once you relearn the basics.

For my last pair of these I did beat the hell out of with concrete work which is probably why they lasted only 3 years before tearing even though I put oil and cleaned them up, oiled every 3,6 months and cleaned almost everyday because of work thinking about a second pair of these because there the only shoe I’ve felt comfortable wearing with my feet. The only thing I did notice when I had them for like 3 months into wearing them the sides where your foot bends while walking every day almost there was white stuff on the sides of them I don’t know what that is so if someone could tell me that would be appreciated
