One tip I learned came when I was selling my previous home. It had a large closet, fairly full (and not everything was flattering, to be honest). A common piece of advice from real estate agents is that a simple, uncluttered home will be more visually appealing to potential buyers. "Staging" is all the rage. And if you're moving anyhow, just pack away what you don't need immediately, without the results looking as though you've taken a vow of poverty. (In other words, make it look like a comfortable home, but depersonalized.) So, following this advice, I packed away pretty much everything that was out-of-season, and suddenly realized how few pieces (a) I actually needed, and (b) really "worked" with more than one other item. This really worked for me; I ended up unpacking everything, going through it all, and discarding/donating items that were not longer right. How nice to arrive in our new home knowing where to put everything, and that there would be enough space.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who buys clothes and then later discovers she doesn't love them anymore! I must say, your donated items will be wonderful for some woman couldn't buy them otherwise.

I left work 2 years ago and I started watching your videos. After a break overseas I ended up decluttering all my work clothes. I went back and looked and cringed at how dull they were and how I had veered off my personal style. Basically everything went that was not in my colours and that did not suit my post-work style. It has been great and you are so correct it is a journey. I now revisit and re-evaluate on a regular basis. I have tried new combinations and got back into colours I love. I am even challenging myself to learn French but I am not very good - lack of confidence and no-one to practice with but I hold out hopes that I may improve and be able to travel and use what I have learnt. Thank you

Great tips! It's hard sometimes for me to get rid of clothes I paid good money for. I tend to go in "phases" where I'll buy items of a certain color, or patterned items. I love them for a while, but then they get relegated to the back. When it comes time to declutter, I feel guity for getting rid of them! Thanks to your videos, I'm becoming more deliberate and careful about what I choose to bring into my closet. New items have to be quality, classic and able to go with other pieces.

@@MarieAnneLecoeur Thanks, Marie-Anne! It's a good reminder to use these opportunities to let our style evolve and not judge past decisions. We made them for a reason at that time and now it's time to make choices that reflect our current style growth. :)

In the 60's, my mother used to get me to 'feel the fabric, feel the weight' when out clothes shopping. She would discreetly crumple up a handful to see if it withstood creasing ( oh, Mother, how I used to flinch). Bless her - she would find modern clothes are often made from thin poor material that do not hang well, or wear well.

I got a blouse out in magenta that I feel good in and always get compliments. I know I’m on the right track in the style journal in a few sentences. I tend to shortchange myself when buying apparel. No more. I have a friend I go with to the farmers market and she reminds me that I should treat myself. Those things and watching your videos awakened my artistic mind in terms of style! I abandoned my fashion design business when the pandemic killed it, but I’m open now to a metamorphosis…who knows what’s next..

I’m working on the idea of loving everything in my closet, and not feeling guilty about past purchases that aren’t “wows.” I keep a donate bag in my closet. The current occupants are a pair of low rise tight yellow jeans (hello funnel!) and a stained white Oxford cloth shirt. Before they got to the donate bag they hung in the “death row” section in the back of my closet. It’s evolving!

Chapin Montague I’m with you especially on the guilt thing. We all make mistakes. Sadly with fashion it can some times mean quite a bit of money was wasted. It’s a lesson I’ve learned and forgotten too many times, reinforcing knowing my style and only owning what truly excites me.

I will confess, I am a bit of a clothing hoarder, but after watching 2/3 of this video, I paused it and went upstairs to my closet and filled 5 large bags of items to donate. I am especially working on getting rid of everything that does not perfectly suit my body type and current esthetic.

Oh that butterfly skirt, I don't think I would be able to part with! At 65 I have been a life long clothes horse, & it's time to do the seasonal switch from winter to spring/summer. That's why I watched your video. I have watched similar video's on this topic, hoping for any helpful hints, but I think I got more out of yours, so THANK YOU! Yes, I'm afraid my wardrobe is "lagging behind me", as you said! I love buying clothes, but am slow to discard. I have different criteria now, either I can see it being used as a wardrobe staple, otherwise it has to be something special that I will love wearing. So I am, as you say "evolving". There are so many pieces in my wardrobe I know if I saw them today I would not purchase. I guess you could say I had a victory of sorts today, as my youngest daughter, (who is also a clothes horse) & I sometimes go for a mani-pedi, & there is a consignment shop right near there we almost always pop in. Well today was the first time we both came out empty handed, not because they didn't have some lovely things, but we didn't see anything we needed!

I declutter whenever the mood strikes me. My Children’s former nanny who is now our cleaning lady helps me by taking all of my unwanted clothing and sharing it with her own family. Sometimes she sends packages of clothing to her family in the Philippines. I also give designer pieces to my local consignment shop (sometimes I buy items there too). It feels good to give old clothing a new life !

  • @Shelley_az

This is such a timely video! I really like the idea of having a box right in your closet to collect clothes you are no longer wearing.
I find it most interesting that most of the pieces you are getting rid of are black, gray or white. But yet you have a lot of beautiful colorful pieces behind you. Perhaps you are moving into a more colorful period of dressing?
I, also, often will put the hangers on backwards to see just how often I wear the item. If I haven’t worn it in 6-12 months, I know it’s time to go.

When I watch you Marie-Anne, I always feel inspired to go get rid of more of my clothing hoard.😂 I’m very motivated from watching you and how encouraging you are, so now I get rid of ill-fitting clothes, as well as ones that are itchy, uncomfortable or just don’t wow me. I used to wear anything in order to create an outfit..it was just for work...then I could wear what I wanted in real life...but now I am creating my entire wardrobe around what I truly like. If I haven’t worn it in ages, it has to go... I’m really getting control over my closet (ok, it’s actually a full room of clothes and garnet racks, but it’s sooo much better👍🏻💗). Ty so much for ur inspiration.💐

Perfect timing! Nearly Spring, putting away most of heavy Sweaters, corded pants, etc. I DO have boxes to toss things in... sort of first step in process, as each item will be evaluated before donating. My mother used to say, stand up straight, you look so slouchy in that ( usually when trying on clothes.) if I didn’t LOVE it, my whole body expressed my dislike, at 8 and 10. Still does. 🙄i think we look much more attractive in clothes we love, which we feel pretty and or elegant and stylish wearing!

I just did a major declutter (3 bags full) of clothes/shoes & decided that maybe someone else would love them because I wasn't wearing them anymore. I also went through my sock drawer & got rid of about 1/2 of it - I had too many socks!! My cousin challenged me to a 40 day challenge during Lent to get rid of one item per day for 40 days. I really appreciate your video on decluttering. It can be so difficult to make decisions about what to let go of, especially when it is an item that was gifted. I feel bad to let go of a gifted item when it is something that doesn't work with your current style. The other thing is when an item looks great still and you think you are going to need/wear it so you end up keeping it just in case. I watch these videos to help me feel like I can make a difference and realize that it is okay to let things go. Merci ♥️

Fabric quality has been constantly reducing…. my Mom has some cashmere sweeters form the eighties and they are PERFECT. Prada bag from the seventies and the leather is soft and perfect. Nothing absolutely nothing comparable to what is sold in shops (even high brands!) these days. It's really difficult to find quality Marie-Anne and I am sure you know it better than me. The concept to bring everything to the masses and sizing instead of tayloring is recent after all (50-60 years compared to centuries of tayloring)

You are right Emanuela. I bought a sweater in the Street of Patission, Athens in the late 80’s and I still wear it to this day, very good quality and real wool. Having said that, I see some beautiful pieces ( bags and clothes) and #NoNameBrand at Amazon. 🤔

    • @alcogito8287
      @alcogito8287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You are right, Emanuela. It is hard to find good quality fabrics, no matter what the price or brand. Often the only solution is consignment or thrift shops if you don't have a hige clothes budget. And the sizing! It is all over the place, which makes it harder to buy online when you cannot try things on until after you pay for shipping. Discouraging.

    • @pixie3760
      @pixie3760 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I couldn't agree more. That's why I make a lot of my clothing. Not because I make it better than the shops but because I have a much larger choice of fabrics. What I save in my own tailoring I can spend on first grade fabrics, such as silk, whilst at first I found it difficult to sew, I decided to follow in my mother's footsteps and do a three year tailor's course. If I hadn't gone to school to learn how to not only make clothing but to also make my own patterns I wouldn't have the wardrobe I have now. Fashion comes and goes, but style is timeless, which is why I love Madame's videos.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and emotions during decluttering clothes.
Everytime I try to throw out something, magically I manage to convince myself that i will be able to use it again---it will go back to shelf, it stays there another half a year not even moved. Now I realise every time I choose clothes for the day, that is the true reality check. If it is comfortable to wear, if it hurts, if I feel good wearing in the environment of that day, if I worry about cleaning it, if I am afraid of stain it... So in the end, the piece I didn't touch for half a year should go out, doesn't matter how good of the material, color, fit.
Do you think the first a few black pieces can be salvaged by removing the white strips and change to muted color buttons? I always try to ask myself what is it bother me from a clothes, if I can modify it. The material(color), the fit and the cut are the respects I check now.

Bonjour Marie-Anne, In December my husband redesigned my closet. It looks amazing and I did a first wave of declutter. It now needs the second wave. On my word yes! The quality of the fabric has greatly declined. I love J crew but I find that often when the price seems like a bargain it's because of the poor quality. Not the same as it used to be when the prices were out of my reach but the clothes were lovely. I find the same is true with every brand.

I just recovered an old coat, probably 10 years old. I used to wear this coat a lot, but then I left it at my parents when I moved out and I forgot about it. This winter I finally took it with me, and I am so glad I did. It's a timeless black, shorter coat with wool in it. I remember when I bought it, it was about 50-60€, from H&M. What do you get there these days for the same price? Just a worse fitting plastic jacket.

Still working on decluttering so this is wonderfully relevant - I'm so new to this that there are gaps all over the place in my wardrobe right now because I used to spend winters in jeans and sweatshirts. Stylish is very new to me, and I really really need a turtle-neck or two and a couple of those nice cashmere sweaters. I'm coming to the conclusion that I think my wardrobe will eventually have a lot of classic styles in some brighter colours (yes, there are going to be black and white pieces because everyone needs those!) - I love earth tones so there's going to be greens and browns, and jewel tones such as burgundy and teal.

Some of my varied points: Shoes - feet change throughout the eons and old cheap shoes no longer feel comfortable. So I've invested in very high quality SAS shoes; clothing companies from 40 years ago had better quality than today so many are still "keepers;" :( So sad that Chadwicks of Bostons has gone out of business - I was looking to purchase a few more basic corduroy jeans but alas the company is defunct; I recycle, as I go along, unsuitable pieces by placing in recycle plastic bags in the bottom of one closet - at the beginning of a new season, I take them to the charity shop; I don't replace items (i.e. undies, exercise wear etc.) that are frayed (since I have more than I need of them anyway); I must get rid of "childish" items (though I still am a child at heart - but no longer of body); I keep current clothing, after use and cleaning, in a neat pile in a "neat" section of closets (using the same colors i.e. for Valentines day and xmas holidays) and then put them back in place on hangers at the end of the holidays. Suggestions for your future videos: how about: ways to style wrap dresses and long black skirt. That is all -- no now! :)

I make exceptions for just 3 or 4 things I have dearly loved that go out of fashion. I just pulled out my own vintage scarf from Dior that is in my favorite colors, a wool jacket, and boots that were stored away way back in my closet. I dearly loved those items and have joy in pulling them out again as style recycles. Otherwise, bye bye! I’m trying to do what my fashionable grandmother said, „Buy a dress; get rid of a dress. Buy a blouse; get rid of a blouse.“

Another thing that changes very much with time is your psychological attitude, aswell as your "Weltentschaung", and that allso makes your taste evolve. Sometimes it happens you see something so fabuolous and so smashing, that it gives you new inspiration for your own style. For instance a colour, that you never ever would have contemplated before, might become one of your favourites; exactly what happened to me with pink too! First, let me tell you that I enjoy every video that you post- I learn so much from them. Wardrobe decluttering is torture for me, truly. I have way too many clothes and I like/love so many of them. I live in the Great Lakes area of the United States and we have four distinct seasons so clothes are needed for them. I also spend 2 of the winter months in warm, sunny Florida, but the summer wardrobes worn here differ from the styles worn up north at home. So I have ended up with two closets at home- one too many as far as I am concerned! I'm in Florida now so can't do anything about what clothes are at home, but you have motivated me to at least go through the process with what I have here now. I do a lot of consignment shopping down here with friends, too, and always come home with more than I left with because of that reason- but I do get some nice, quality buys that way. I'm working on my French capsule wardrobe, too, so I always have my eyes open here and at home for pieces that will fit in. I think that I would benefit from starting a style journal (I bought a pretty notebook but never used it) and I think I am going to try the hanger turn-around trick too. Please don't stop with this decluttering video, I would like to see more! Merci, and hello to you and your little dog Coco!

I do the same - but in order to REALLY declutter, for me it’s one piece in, two pieces out. Eventually I get (or will get) to the moment where everything in my closet is something I love to wear and the only new things coming in are replacements or slight variations on the original item. It also makes me more aware that the items in my closet can be mixed and matched into many, many different. outfits. So do I really “need” this (i.e. it’s a replacement)? Could I update the look with an accessory in the “in”colour or pattern of the season? I can feel better about the ethics too: fast fashion is not always produced under safe working conditions, so the less I buy of it, the more I appreciate what I have that’s of true quality.

I declutter change of seasons, but since I’ve retired I’ve gotten rid of clothes that I wore for work. As a plus size woman there is a great need for good quality clothes in this size for women just entering the workforce after years away. The sadness of giving my business clothes away was counterbalance by the thought that they would be appreciated by someone else just starting out. I kept one or two suits, but gave everything else away including shoes, bags and totes.

I do a big declutter in Spring and fall! Like the box idea! It would help in decisions that can come up, like you said, when you do laundry. We have a charity shop that is well used. I also take stuff to my former workplace. Leave them for a bit and then take what is left to Thrifty’s. I am getting better at buying less! Thanks to you and a couple of other TH-cam presenters! I find it is fun to declutter! Next project will be sweaters! And rearranging my storage space for them. OMG! The only time I hung into something for a long time was the designer suit I bought for my son’s wedding. It cost me £500, but another occasion never arose for me to wear it. After five years I donated it to a charity shop. Such a shame!

Thanks for another great video, Marie-Anne! To save money and reduce waste, I've been thinking much more carefeully about each item before I buy it. I've been doing this for a about a year now, and my giveaway pile is much smaller.

Bonjour Marie-Anne. Another entertaining video. First things first. Poor Coco probably thought she was going to be placed in the de-cluttering box, so she did a quick exit from the sofa :)
On my chuck out habits: I only really throw things out when they look tired and over-worn and whenever my body shape changes, so they no longer fit. I rarely just fall out of love with items I buy. i feel the same way about items I've had in my wardrobe for years as I did the day I bought them. I do find that I have a few items that I hardly ever wear, and probably will never wear again, but I still won't chuck them out - just in case I do want to wear them. I still love them too.

Something I have done before that I need to do again is to turn all the hangars backwards so that the hook points forward instead of toward the wall. Keep them that way until you wear the item, then hang it back up the right way. Then, if a year has passed (or whatever time frame you choose), if you haven’t worn it you will know. It is then time to give away everything hung backwards!

I love your little Coco. So sweet. Another TH-cam lady I follow has a kitty named Chanel. The other day I took a solid gray top out of the dryer and held it up. It had two grease stains on it. It was probably too late to remove the stain, since it had been through the dryer and I only felt so-so about it, so I threw it in the trash. I put another top in my charity box, because I really hadn't been feeling great about it and realized that I don't even like it anymore. Classic clothes

I loosely follow the 30/3 wardrobe plan, thirty items in your wardrobe for three months then what is not in my current wardrobe is boxed up. Every three months I then have a shop my wardrobe exercise, this is when I do most of my weeding. At this time I also review gaps or what needs replacing. I am out to bring out a faithful Boden dress, it works well for the office, in jersey so does not crease, it has seen better days so I'm on the lookout for a replacement. Once I find a replacement I will remove the old one.

And if you took that high quality grey wool skirt to a tailor, had those bulky belt loops removed and the hem let down you would realize it was another 'new' classic. As we all agree, quality is hard to find and not very affordable. I say look at 'remodeling' if it's feasible.
