Why when I look up cng first thing that pops up is exploding cars

If they're so safe why does everyone have to get out of the car while filling up? That should tell you something, not only that but every 3 years you have to get a new tank...

What about long-term usage on wear & tear on engine components???

Thanks for the question. We recommend contacting a truck dealership to get questions answered on engine performance.

I am no expert on CNG, but I do have quite a bit of knowledge about engines. I would say that in some ways running on CNG would be better for longevity than running on gasoline because natural gas burns a lot cleaner than gasoline, so there won't be the issues with carbon buildup that gasoline engines have. The oil would stay a lot cleaner for this reason too. Also, since CNG is a gas rather than a liquid, it won't wash the engine oil off the cylinder walls like gasoline can, and it also can not dilute the oil like gasoline can. Eliminating carbon deposits, cylinder wash, and oil dilution as well as keeping the oil cleaner are certainly benefits for longevity. As for potential longevity disadvantages, I can't think of any but I would suggest doing your own research. People say that the gasoline lubricates the engine's parts such as valves and rings, but it actually has the complete opposite effect by washing the oil off of the engine's parts.

I had a Honda Civic that ran 200k miles with cng and no problem.

@@diego_charles I have a 2008 CNG civic with 320k miles. I have become concerned with the tank integrity over the years so I stand pretty far away from it when I fill up. Considering the thing takes only $14 to fill up it simply cannot be beat in terms of economy

@@lm7bird680 here in my country, you have to do an anual inspection and a tank integrity test each 5 years. If something abnormal is detected the tank is replaced. The gas tanks here have expiration date of 20 years.

They talk alot about CNG not being as flammable as gasoline or diesel. That is true, but gasoline and diesel is not under high pressure and CNG is.
A new high pressure thank is probably safe, but what happens when the parts age? Lets say you drive in the rust belt are when the tank and other fuel system components are exposed to elements and hostile environment. How safe are these old tanks then?
An old gasoline tank might start leaking, but when a CNG tank fails, it can do so with a big bang, costing you your life. They need to come up with a way to store gas in a non-pressurized form before these gas cars can be deemed safe.

Thank you for the comment. NGV America has additional tank safety info. Here's a link: www.ngvamerica.org/resource-center/?resource_type=safety-documents

this is why tank have expire date, and need to be controlled annually (or once in two year, depending on country laws). So before it might come to the point that old material could pose a risk, it is replaced.
