I also made my own wedding dress recently. And i have a subtle pink tulle over white tulle for the petticoat. This gives subtle pink colour underneath which is fun. So excited to see your fun ideas come to lifeee.
At 65 and a grandma, I make non-traditional wedding dresses. Ive made about a dozen and sell them in a booth. Like you i can't get enough of it. I make everything but all white or long and white. Around here there are plenty of galas and new years eve parties for those type of dresses. Chopping off a train is pure excitement i hear in your voice. My mom made my first communion dress out of her train. I wish you health, wealth, and happiness for your new life. 💍
@@sammiiraee they are at Painted Tree Boutique in Sugarland Texas. It's a boutique mall. They are also in a book I wrote Altered Couture: sewing a non- traditional wedding dress, on Amazon. I have a few on my you tube channel playlist Susan Devine Napoli. I actually quit traditional sewing to raise children so my newer venture is Altered Couture where I make it up as I go.
Big recommendations on a tie back for the dress - helps ensure it will fit, no matter what your body is up to, and you can eat all your tasty wedding food. Also, big ups to bustles to have your train and dancing dress too!
CONGRATS CARLY! This is such good news! I made my own wedding dress, and I liked how it turned in the end, but I did feel a bit of pressure to get it perfect. My advice to you would be to have fun and not obsess about making THE PERFECT DRESS, because in a way it will never be, since not all the amazing ideas can make it into one dress. About the train/t-length dilemma, you could always make the entire dress t-length, and on top add either an overskirt with the train or a removable train, kind of like a cape you can remove for the reception. I personally prefer the same dress for both events, but it can be easily modified to make it more comfortable to dance and jump around in the reception. CONGRATS AGAIN! So looking forward to this series!
you're so right. I had to write that down because I can already sense myself wanting EVERYTHING in one dress - which just isn't possible!!!! Thanks for the reminder!!!
Your dress description is so joyous and whimsical, its so sweet to see someone so excited- not only about an exciting event (congrats, by the way!), but the journey of _making!_ for that event! So happy to see someone so thrilled to create, and having seen your past projects I have no doubt you'll pull it off! Not only that, but your excitement is infectious- it's definitely re-inspired me to be excited about projects I am working on! :)
Idk if you already know about her, but Sarah Spaceman had one of the best, most well explained corset/ bodice making videos I’ve seen yet. She’s a cosplay TH-camr, she does an excellent job going in depth about the process of sewing and crafting every little thing.
I've been absolutely BINGING Kat Makes shorts content on Tambour Embroidery so I was picturing alot of her beautiful delicate flowers and embellishments as you were describing your vision. She has great long form tutorials too! Congratulations!
Highly recommend Freida Leopold's videos! She makes some BEAUTIFUL gowns with very well-tailored bodices (and lots of historical inspiration), and all of her videos are very methodical and detailed. Plus, her most recent two go into making & covering a corset for a strapless dress, which might help give inspiration.
I have to STRESS, consider using tie for the dress, not zipping. My dress was tied and it was the best decision ever. You never know how your body changes. I kept my dress, we actually had a kinda wedding renewal two years later. Never would I have ever still fit in a zipped dress, but we could cheat me in my old dress. I gained a lot of weight though, so 😂 Congratulations, enjoy the fiancée time, it will go away way too fast!
Carly!!! Congratulations sweetheart!! This is so exciting. And then on top of it you are allowing us to come on your wedding dress making journey?! Thank you ❤
You are going to feel and look like the most delightful ethereal flower! Congratulations. As a sewist myself, I get it. You have what it takes to make it!
Wooo hoo!! Huge congratulations, Carly! Can’t wait to follow your journey. I know you, your dress, and your wedding are going to be absolutely fabulous and gorgeous come the big day ❤🎉😊
I love this video. I love this journey. IM HERE FOR IT. I wore a 1950s dress that was blue but faded to be the most perfect ethereal blue ever. It was organza silk and so floaty and I absolutely loved it.
@fromcarlyb awww thank you!! Yep I have no regrets! Love classic shapes and draping as it will still look beautiful in years to come. That's why I love all your ideas here
Congratulations! That’s so exciting! Draping 101 & Daria Pattern Making have some really good tutorials, if you want a bustier pattern, I really like the LilypaDesigns Kanon Bustier, and also Alexandra Louise is great for inspo for draping very fun gowns. Good luck and can’t wait to watch the process!
Also, for the train/tea length dilemma, you could consider a cape? Like a robe? So you can have a sleeveless bodice/corset underneath and then a whimsical organza/chiffon/tulle layer on top, maybe with your signature puffed sleeves? 👀✨
Congratulations! 18 years ago when I got married I hadn't sewn anything since I was a college freshman. I don't feel confident enough now that I would try something so special. I will be eager to see how it turns out. I would have loved to have had a train, but my wedding was outdoors and my Mom and I somewhat reluctantly agreed that a train wasn't practical. When I found my dress I forgot all about the train. Mine was an off the shoulder, sweetheart neckline ball gown style. The bodice had lots of embroidery and sequins, and it had a tulle over skirt. I like your ideas about tea length in front and a train, and a long veil.
very excited to see how this turns out! Rather than making a separate reception dress, you could go with the separates option for your wedding gown and make a tea length skirt for your reception to wear with the bodice of your wedding gown?
Congratulations!! Thank you for bringing us on this journey with you! I'm so excited to see your vision come to life! When you said at the beginning of the video that you were going to document the whole process, I got very nervous about this being just a 14-minute video. But a series!! I'm so stoked. I hope you know that we all share your excitement, and most of us are going to bask in your joy throughout the series.
Congratulations, Carly! You are such a joyful little soul and I'm so happy for both of you! I'm so excited that we get to be part of this journey to make your dress. I think if you were to place an ivory iridescent sequin under each pale mint, pink, etc. bead, you will maybe get the effect that you are after? Not changing the overall color, but adding your beautiful whimsical touch. The veil sounds lovely, the tea length with a train sounds lovely- all of it sounds Carly-licious! Such an exciting make!!! Yikes!
Frieda Lepold is an amazing seamstress, with incredible construction skills and soft elegant designs. I don’t think she does many tutorials, but maybe she can be an inspiration
Ahh so excited for you pair! And I’m so here for the dress and loving your vision so far. I just know you are gonna be the complete embodiment of a shiny, beautiful, glistening, flower, princess, queen, fairy 👑 bring on the toile!
Btw I am also engaged!!! I was going to make my dress as well but decided to work with a seamstress instead for this big day. Yay pretty gorgeous dresses!!!
I greatly enjoy your videos. I find them both relaxing and encouraging. I am very much a novice sewist and I find your approach to projects fun and relatable. I've been watching your videos for a while and I think this is the first I've commented on. I just wanted to say Congratulations on becoming engaged
Aw thank you for such a sweet comment. It warms my heart. Your hobbit wedding sounds fantastic & completely genuine!!! I love it. Thank you for your kind wishes & I'm sending them right back to you!
AAAAAH congratulations!! how lovely! im thinking, if you want it to be a t-length you could also get a HUGE veil since said you loved that feel so much. that way you can have the look of a train, but also have it the length you want and at that length you can easily move around and dance after the ceremony. And!! you wont have to be scared that people will step on your train at the party hahahaha
ah i didnt finish the entire video before posting this comment hahaha, the bustes also sound cool! i wonder how that would work with the embroidery. im confident you'll absolutely slay it!
Congrats! I am so excited for you. Have you heard of Tambour embroidery? Its really common on lightweight fabrics, and I think it would lend itself beautifully to your dress ideas. Also- you should see if you can get some iridescent sequins also? in your range of white and silver and off white and pastels, I think it would help blend all of them together. I am so excited for you!
CARLYYYY AAHHHH THAT'S SO EXCITINGGGG I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU I will accept all you excitement - because I have so much excitement for you. I love love love wedding dress videos and the fact that you're making one is so so so so exciting
Yay!! So happy for you!! I didn’t make my dress, I wasn’t really a sewist back then, but my mom and mostly my grandma re-made the dress they BOTH wore, for me to wear. (50’s dress, remade for a 70’s wedding, returned to the 50’s style for my ‘01 wedding.) But if I were to be getting married now, you bet I’d be making my own dress! So fun!!
I know I'm late to the party, but I think Stargazer lilies fit the flower description you were conveying. They're mostly white with a light color accent on each petal toward the center, and they have spots that could be beads that glisten
Your excitement is so very special and thank you for allowing us to travel this beautiful moment with you - i am definitely looking forward to seeing your design unfold ❤
My wedding dress was a tea length into a train and I loved it! It was also pink tulle with beading and pearls on the bodice and it made me so pretty and special and beautiful!
This is so exciting! I wasn’t into sewing clothes yet when I got married so I bought a tulle BHLDN dress. But I’m so excited to watch this process and see you with a gorgeous dress that’s uniquely you
OMG CONGRATS!!!!!! this is so thrilling im so happy for you both!!! you have such a sure sense of your style and what you love; i know you're going to make the most gorgeous look for your wedding 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Freida Lepold makes gorgeous couture gowns similar to what you described on her TH-cam channel of the same name. Congratulations and I look forward to watching you create this dress!
Congratulations. I am so happy for you! I love your vision, I love how you verbalize your vision so clearly even though you’re saying it’s not clear. You really do know what you want and you’re gonna make it happen. Also. I do feel like I have some insight I would like to share. This is from the dress you made where you patchworked the beautiful ombré fabric in pink and yellow and then you wrote a word across the front in black. Remember when you cut it slightly too short? that’s tea length and I don’t think you should go tea length for your wedding dress. I am not against tea length wedding dresses. I just felt like that length on that dress you made was a mistake. So keep that in mind as you’re deciding on the length of your dress. I know it’s gonna be amazing. I know you are an amazing creator and so inspiring. The skirt that I made from your TH-cam tutorial is my favorite thing I’ve ever made 😊. Good luck, Carly. I can’t wait to see you process unfold.
Please show a close up of your engagement ring. You are one of the most enjoyable people to watch on TH-cam. You are so full of joy and enthusiasm in all that you share with us on that it makes me happy to listen to you and watch you create. You are such a breath of fresh air and sunshine. Can't wait to see your Wedding Dress created before my eyes. Keep sparkling the world needs more people with your kind of positive energy.
Would maybe doing a removeable train also be an option? Big train for the ceremony and nice tea length dress to dance and mingle afterwards in? So excited to see how it looks!
Congratulations! I'm definitely going to be watching the whole process. Maybe you've seen her videos already but, Frieda Leopold makes beautiful corseted and flowy gowns kind of similar to what you are planning.
Congratulations! I have a few suggestions to look to both for design and construction ideas. For general fitted bodice to flared, full skirt, Dior's New Look silhouette of the late 40's into the 50's should provide good information on structuring the bodice in such a way to give a sleek but supportive, fitted bodice with a distinct silhouette, and many of these evening gown versions in particular are strapless, making it very easy to either keep strapless or modify with a simple, swoopy off the shoulder sleeve. For the more floral inspiration, in that same time period Dior made the Junon and Venus dresses that has these gorgeous embellished petals to the skirt - architectural, with some versions having a swooping high-low overskirt of petals and others being a full cascade. Additionally, the slightly-multitonal-but-primarily-white mention made me think of a designer I saw while looking for inspiration for my own wedding dress, an Etsy artist with a shop called Wardrobe by Dulcinea. She makes these beautiful ombre layered tulle skirts that can be subtle or bold and are just gorgeous - the way she plays with color is just lovely. Additionally, something like that would add a lot of dimension without much time, effort or money, which given the short time frame might be useful! Again, congratulations, and I can't wait to see all the lovely wedding content coming up!
@@fromcarlyb Absolutely!! And if you need any help finding resources on how to construct these or anything, I'm a librarian and would be happy to help! Historic clothing silhouettes and research are a perfect combination of my interest and skills, haha. Cheers!
@@BridgetBaker-e5z That is so kind of you. I actually have been searching high & low on resources on how to create corselets (the inside structure of a dress ... i've seen them a lot in 1950s Dior gowns...) but I haven't been able to find much there.... Do you happen to know any resources that dive into this? No worries if not - thank you so much for even offering!!
Love all the ideas! If you're unsure about the train you could make the dress tea length with a removable top layer for the ceremony and that can be train length... maybe...possibly....perhaps... ish 🤔
So happy for you and Elijah! Congrats! My wedding dress was blue and white, and 7+ years later, I’m still so glad I chose to wear something I felt like me in. OH, I HIGHLY suggest a cathedral length veil - the longer the better 😍 It’s that classic, traditional nod that helps ground more non-traditional vibes… and it’s pretty 😂❤ You get to wear this beautiful wedding dress once in your life, so I suggest wearing in your reception - people are going to want to see it! I’m looking forward to this series!
Thanks for posting about this process! I am on the hunt for a wedding dress and feeling Overwhelmed so just hearing your thoughts is helpful. Can't wait to see the process! x
Congeatulations!!! I can completely see you vision. Q couple of practical suggestions. If you make the dress 2 piece you can swap out the skirt for the reception and you won't have to rig up a bustle or the train could be part of an over skirt that you just remove
aaah congrats! im really excited for this series and love your ideas already! also thanks for adding captions, i do want to say that it's better to add them to like the youtube captions so people can find the videos based on them having captions, can change the size and color, them not being hidden behind the progress bar etc 😊
I wonder if you could put an additional layer of thin chiffon over top of the sequined layer? That way you’d be able to maintain the light floaty movement and the colored sequins would be quieted just enough. Congratulations!!!
Congratulations to you and Elijah! What an exciting time for you! When my mom got married (in the 1960’s) her dress was a relatively simple shift dress but the vahvahvoom was the jacket that went over the top. The jacket had the train and all of the embellishment - so no need for bustles or anything fancy in order to modify the dress for dancing. She simply took off her jacket and the dress was perfect for dancing. It was like the concept of a reception dress before that was a thing. I wonder if that would add that “couture” edge that you’re looking for, but also give you the convertibility that you mentioned.
I am so excited for you!!! I am engaged as well and the first thing i thought was about being able to make my own dress, but we don't have a date set yet, so i shall live vicariously through you for now!!
posting twice in one week!!! who is she! ah! i'm so nervous to make this dress guys hahahahaha send help
This is such a moment! Congratulations ❤❤
I'm SO EXCITED FOR YOU!

Lorraine White makes beautiful corsets
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I wrote everything you said down. Extremely helpful. I appreciate it so much.
OMG! Congratulations! What terrific news.
thank you so muchhhhhh!!!!!!
I can't wait to see the process, you always have incredible vision! I am happy you are both happy!
congrats!!!
Congratulations!!! So excited to see this process🤩
Congratulations! I'm curious to see a drawing once it becomes clearer for you! I would be so eager to order all of the sequins and experiment!
Love all the ideas! If you're unsure about the train you could make the dress tea length with a removable top layer for the ceremony and that can be train length... maybe...possibly....perhaps... ish 🤔
I am beyond excited for this series 🎉
AYYYYYAAA y
So happy for you and Elijah! Congrats! My wedding dress was blue and white, and 7+ years later, I’m still so glad I chose to wear something I felt like me in. OH, I HIGHLY suggest a cathedral length veil - the longer the better 😍 It’s that classic, traditional nod that helps ground more non-traditional vibes… and it’s pretty 😂❤ You get to wear this beautiful wedding dress once in your life, so I suggest wearing in your reception - people are going to want to see it! I’m looking forward to this series!
that sounds simply delightful. OHHHHH that's awesome!!!! hehehe
So exciting!! Congratulations! 🎊 Cant wait to follow along!
thank you so much!!!
Hooray! Congratulations Carly 🥰 What a special time! xx
Thank you Melody!!!!!
Thanks for posting about this process! I am on the hunt for a wedding dress and feeling Overwhelmed so just hearing your thoughts is helpful. Can't wait to see the process! x
I feel that overwhelm!!! It feels like such a big choice?! Good luck fellow bride !!!! hehe
Congratulations Carly and Elijah! I have never been so excited about a wedding dress as I am about yours, I look forward to all the progress reports.
Congratulations 😊
Can’t wait to see the process
I wonder if you could put an additional layer of thin chiffon over top of the sequined layer? That way you’d be able to maintain the light floaty movement and the colored sequins would be quieted just enough. Congratulations!!!
OH LOVELY!!!!!
I am so excited for you Carly! Congratulations and can not wait to see this series 🎉💍
You are so cute! I love to see that you are so excited about sewing your wedding dress. Congratulations!!
Congratulations Carly! So happy for you and Elijah ❤ so looking forward to seeing your beautiful vision come to life ❤
That’s wonderful! Sure you’ll make the best wedding dress.
Congratulations!! I cannot wait to see how your dress turns out!! Wishing you and Elijah a life time of happiness together xXx
