    This adjustable waistband is the type that used to be inside of children’s trousers and now I’m thinking about how magical that would be in adult trousers 😂

      My partner bought black pleated trousers at UNIQLO and they have got this mechanism inside, it is genius! (..since I am able to also wear those now haha)

    I work at a school success center and we use ‘foundational and complex’ rather than ‘easy and hard’ bc things are difficult the first times! You’re right also that it’s hard to extend ourselves grace. The skirt is lovely and it seemed like an excellent learning experience.

    I'm really glad that you show your mistakes because they're not really mistakes they're just science. You're testing out different ways of doing things and then when you don't get the outcome you want now you have more data.

    I'm self taught when it comes to sewing. I've learnt from TH-cam and just doing it. And patterns that I haven't made myself are the most confusing thing ever for me. I'm also ADHD so that might play into it as well. I've yet to try pleats or tucks or anything like those yet.
    I normally use the term "mock up" for my test garments.
    my flavor ice cream flavor is mint chocolate chip. Even, more so if it has fudge swirls.

    The dream skirt I've always pictured in my head looks just like yours! I've attempted making it three times and still haven't really worn them because I find so many design/construction mistakes in them. This was an insanely good make! Congrats

    Next time for a blind hem, try using a blind hem presser foot. It lines up the fabric so that the thread picks up as little of the fabric as possible for virtually invisible stitches consistently. I actually taught myself how to do a blind hem just last week and have been practicing through trial and error. You may have to fidget with the stitch length and width to make sure the thread actually catches the fabric (that’s been my main issue) but it’s really easy to just go over the parts that you missed, since no one is seeing the inside stitches anyways. Not sure what model you have but my singer heavy duty came with one. Excited to see your progress!

      oooh i didn't know there was such a thing - a wonderful tip, thank you! I'll keep practicing.

    Your frustration with the zip is very relatable ❤️ I have moments like that with sewing all the time. We put so much pressure on ourselves to figure things out right away or be perfect at something really quickly, but that’s neither fair nor realistic. Humans have been wearing clothing for millennia. That’s a long time for people to come up with all kinds of snazzy techniques. It’s gonna take us some tries to master techniques that took hundreds of years to be developed 🙃 My favorite flavor of ice cream is cookies n’ cream 😋

    Chocolate. In so many ways you remind me of my much younger self (including the shape of the glasses). Back in my younger years there was no Internet or Google to look things up. You figured it out...or you didn't. If you were lucky you had a pattern or book to consult. I have never seen the fly zipper or the elastic waist underneath the strip of fabric, so those were very interesting to me. Regarding the waistband and doing it the "right" way, in my opinion the right way is any way that works. It may or may not be the conventional way, but if it works and looks good, it's right.

  • @franlevaillant6749
    @franlevaillant6749 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You did so excellently! I was just about to comment that what you’re looking at is a lapped zipper, and you figured it out by yourself! Also, for future reference, the piece you’re referring to as a fly would more accurately in this context be called an underlap, I think. A very good idea when you don’t want your side zips to pinch your skin! ❤
    Also, French Vanilla forever.

    i recently was making a crochet cardigan and even though it was incredibly straightforward, i kept messing up the most basic of things. i spent almost 7 hours one day just working on it, messing up, and fixing it. i came out of it exhausted and a little disheartened. the clip in this video where you discuss how frustrated you were after trying to figure out that zipper felt SO relatable and validating. i'm really glad you included it!!!
    the skirt is amazing! im tempted to make one now....
    my favorite ice cream is a flavor from a local shop called, and it's called 'mozart'. it has chocolate ice cream with pistachio and marzipan bits. though i think the mix of those two actually tastes like matcha! its soooo good, but they don't have it very often

    I think your zipper turned out great! The first time I installed a fly front zipper on a trouser mock-up, I managed to install it backwards lol. Even after practicing on that mock-up, the fly on those trousers was…not great. But many pairs of trousers later, I can manage to do it well enough as long as I have my preferred instructions in front of me! I’ve always used Claire Schaeffer’s couture fly instructions from Threads magazine, but she recently posted a video demonstration, so if you’re ever looking for a great fly tutorial I highly recommend hers!

    In Argentina there's a sweet spread called dulce de leche, close to milk caramel. So, naturally, there's an ice cream of that flavor. My favorite ice cream flavor is dulce de leche granizado (adding "granizado" to an ice cream flavor here means it has tiny chocolate chunks). I think that flavor is the baseline to know if an ice cream shop is good. If they make a good dulce de leche granizado, then I know I can trust the rest of the flavors.

    Pink bubble gum.
    Nicely done. Fly front zippers are a nightmare. I finally learned how to do them by reverse engineering a pair of vintage Tripp pants. The fly in that pair was put in in a very simple way. However, everytime I want to put in a fly front, I have to look at those pants and read my notes all over again.

    For that french word i'm not sure what you mean, is it 'toile'? That just means 'cloth' or fabric. What you mean though is a 'mockup sample', in short 'mockup'. Even here in Germany most people use that.
    As for the zipper, oh the frustration, i know it just too well. And seam ripping it up, stitch by stitch. Btw, there is a way faster way to seam ripp it than the way you (and apparently most people, including myself in the past) do it, you can seam ripp it in one single swoosh. There is a nice quick video about it, called 'the correct way to use a seam ripper (with the red ball!)' by Cucicucicoo. Though of course it's just the fastest way. Very much recommend it, it will save you so much time, nerves and sweat.
    The skirt turned out so lovely anyway, you're doing a fantastic job as a sewist. Keep doing it.

    • @fromcarlyb
      @fromcarlyb  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The other meaning of 'toile' is 'an early version of a finished garment made up in cheap material so that the design can be tested and perfected'. It does also mean cloth though! OOOh sometimes when I try and seam rip in a single swoosh I get my fabric all messed up hahaha - I'm a cautious unpicker!!
      Thank you so much - I really appreciate it! And thank you for watching

    • @emily-kathryn-carol
      @emily-kathryn-carol 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Carly is correct. Just like in the states some people call their toile or mock up “a muslin”… which is of course the fabric it’s often made from,muslin. It’s self referential.
