So this was for a contest (I didn't win) should I make more?

Yes. Make more. Don’t give up. Sorry you didn’t win. Your reporting was spot on. I’m born and raised here and I used to be proud to say I was from here. Not so much anymore. But for sure the RR closing the shops and Kaiser and Norton shutting down all in the same decade I believe, left a huge hole. Also corruption within the city government doesn’t help. Great job you did here.

Born and raised on the Westside. More East Indians and Chinese are moving in. Something I have never seen before. When you see a guy with a Turban jogging down Meridan you know things are about to change drastically.

Interesting... I wonder why. I do get the feeling it's going to be a different place in the next 20 years. Just need some good leadership with better ideas.

A couple of years ago, I went to San Bernardino to check out a used car at a car lot. I was shocked at the condition of the business area and homeless people sleeping in broad daylight on the sidewalks. I was stationed at March AFB in Riverside in 1969-70 and visited people I knew in San Bernardino and it was a pretty nice town back then. The people I visited were friends with the Hells Angels but still it wasn't as bad as it is today!

I am a 71.5 year old white male for point of reference.
My two grandmothers lived in San Bernardino and I spent a lot of time there when I was growing up (50’s through the mid 70’s).
Even 60 years ago there wasn’t a whole lot to recommend San Berdo. It was a crummy blue collar town on the edge of the desert with very poor air quality. There were like no good restaurants to eat at - it was a good thing that one of my grandmothers was a good cook.
But it wasn’t nearly as bad back in my childhood as it is now.
There was also nothing to do in SB when I was a kid there visiting my grandmothers. I don’t think my parents liked going there but since their widowed mothers lived there they had to put in a couple of appearances every year.
IMO the best thing to do for SB is to demolish it and return it to the desert. As bad as it is now it’s only going to get worse.

Railroad companies (UP/SP and BNSF) certainly did NOT shut down. Both corporations are very strong providers of freight transportation throughout the Western half of the USA.
SP's Colton Repair Shop is still operational although ATSF once had a huge locomotive repair facility in San Bernardino. Locomotives are much better made now and don't need nearly as much attention/repair.
There is A LOT of intermodal activity, but these are mostly crane operators and truck drivers.

Beaumont is bad too and banning is horrible people got killed right next door to my house and they found a kid hog tied in a closet in the summer. Also a dude got killed in front of my place, I couldn’t even go to the store cuz they didn’t want us to tamper with the crime scene. All bad

I think we should turn one of these big cities get into the big holding areas for all the fullness within many many states around it. I don’t think anybody would like that idea of fencing it all in, but it should be a gated area equipped with everything from medical to all infrastructure needed to support the homeless. This city has been vacant all these years then let’s get it a millionaire in there with other investors and turn it all around into something productive. It looks like we’ll see all the infrastructure there. Also, we need to first get rid of all the people that were involved with bad decisions which ended up turning this town or county do a bunch of rubbish, dumps, drug addicts, etc. etc. this is America. You can turn this place your eyes.

My nephew went to Pittsburgh to catch a Penguins game and was a but surprised by how things look in that city. Then again he's a Canadian farm kid so pretty much any city would be a shock to him.

You're 100% correct. I grew up in Fontana. Cholos, bloods, and crips started moving in during the early 80s. A lot of people believe this was caused by HUD homes.

San Bernardino has so much potential to rise, but it starts with community investment! We need strong leaders to guide change, “prayer spaces” for “spiritual growth” wide running and walking trails, renewable energy for brighter streets, and better pay for security to enhance safety. Easier CCW classes, and imagine a tramway to Crestline, we can create a brighter future for our city.
