In 1996, my husband and I visited Silverton and fell in love. I hope to go back some day. It is a very special little town. If I had the money I would buy the store!!
Ah I love Silverton ❤ I've visited several times (from the UK!) but only as part of a round trip on the railroad. I need to stay overnight at Silverton next time and enjoy more of the beautiful town. I love nearby Durango and Ouray too. I love the whole area!
I visited from the UK this year and completely agree with you. Like Ouray Silverton has its own vibe. Maybe they should look at putting the grocery deliveries on the train from Durango? I know it doesn't always run to Silverton in the winter, but there may be occasions when emergency supplies could be put on board.
@Pesmog Ooh that would be interesting! It would take some effort by the railroad at the Durango end, but it would be nice for the trains to serve an actual purpose other that passengers. Returning to real "mixed" service trains!
Such a fine example of a business that cares about its customers as opposed to a business that caters to its shareholders. We need more people like this in businesses everywhere.
I watched this video on 1.25 speed, and people still seemed super laid back in their way of speaking. Especially John Poole. It's like life just moves slower in these secluded mountain towns. I love it..
If you have one of these stores in your community and you love it... Do as much shopping as you can there. Don't give your hard earned money to these corporate monsters. Keep your money in your community.
Five years ago, the little towns had IGAs (cooperative in buying wholesale) except for one owned by a gas station's owner. It's prices were high, but Walmart was 10 miles away. They are all now DG (Dollar General) Marketplaces. Horribly understaffed. I work at the Walmart where we pay 40% higher wages. So if you still have your IGA or local store, treasure it! If the price is high, remember that it costs 25-60 cents/mile to travel.
Nice story. They won't be able to hold out forever as time remains undefeated. Hopefully someone comes along who has old-world values to take it over...
I remember when our little store closed and we had to drive fifty miles for everything. It was three years before we got one. they had high prices but when you figure in the travel it was worth it.
I grew up in Salida in the 80's and my childhood was EPIC! We had an underwhelming, poorly lit Safeway for our grocery at the time....... a far cry from my current neighborhood HEB.

Has anyone thought to reach out to the railroad? Durango and Silverton runs diesel locomotives now and posses multiple refurbished freight cars. They already run trains there daily during the summer, couldn’t be too expensive to tack on a boxcar full of groceries. Maybe that would bring down freight costs?

I grew up in Ouray and Telluride Colorado, which is near Silverton. Each town had a small grocer like this. I forgot the name of the one In Ouray, but in Telluride it was Rose's, and later there was a gas station, who had a small convenience store, and later built a bigger one. The drug store owner, Frank B. Wilson, didn't like that the grocer was selling medicine, so he started selling some popular grocery items. The drug store was robbed by Butch Cassidy, before he teamed up with the Sundance Kid and later became known as The Wild Bunch, who fired three shots damaging one of the display cases and the floor. You could still see the damage the bullets made. Thanks for posting.
I've been through that area years ago. It's beautiful. Thank you for your sacrifice to the community and all of your hard work and dedication. Hopefully, the right person will come along willing to keep this store local and family owned. 🤞
All factors considered, I think I would take on a partner who wants to run it and gradually gain more of the interest over time. That would give these guys a way out of the full time responsibility while providing an opportunity for someone who wants to be a member of the community with this type of business for the long term.
I spent a lot of time in that area. We used to own a cabin we built up above the town. Been in that store many times and I’m glad they’re sticking around.

Wishing them all the best. I don't even live there but their story fills me with gratitude for what they've done and are doing.
What an amazing story! We lost our last local grocery store ten plus years ago. Now, only chain stores. It was always nice to be able to pick up a fresh meal for lunch. There, it was waiting in the fridge with my name on the package. I was Tom's last customer, sure miss Sullivan's!
In 1996, my husband and I visited Silverton and fell in love. I hope to go back some day. It is a very special little town.
If I had the money I would buy the store!!
Ah I love Silverton ❤
I've visited several times (from the UK!) but only as part of a round trip on the railroad.
I love it..
He blesses so many people in so many ways...wishing you two continued success and merry christmas...
It’s folks like this that really understand community. Loved this.
I used to live in Durango just a jump hip and a skip away from silverton. I loved driving through the small town. Absolutely gorgeous.
These two people are real Americans, the heart of our great country. I've been to Silverton and its a beautiful experience.
Nice story. They won't be able to hold out forever as time remains undefeated. Hopefully someone comes along who has old-world values to take it over...
It’s nice to see they care about their community and don’t want to gouge their neighbors.
Hiking the Colorado trail we forgot a pair of hiking poles here and came back a week later after finishing and picked them up! Great people!
I'd have headed right back. There is NO way I could go a day w/o poles on the CT.
I come to Silverton every year! A special place in my heart and I come to this grocery store every time. Love the owners of this store.
How delightful ! Many stores like yours exists in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, they are are absolutely the best, as your customer said providing all kinds of support to the community’ but it’s the charm and couthy’ness that is so engaging.
Thank you …..🍂🐿🍁🦊🍂
This is an awesome story and video. Thank you so much for being some of the few people left in the world that don't just take an offer and sell to corporations that do not care 1 bit
"it opened in 1982" @1:24 that car really threw off the perspective of that statement.
Oh man, we would love to come take it off your hands. If we had the money, we’d be there in a heartbeat, Silverton is heaven on earth, it’s so beautiful.
Think about the isolation. Think about no jobs. How many of anything is actually in that town?
@ I grew up in a small mountain town, I’m already ready already, I definitely understand the reality of mountain life hardships. What I miss most of all is a small community, and yeah, the isolation. But I have a bunch of kids and college to think of, so I’m stuck in the city.
@@vuho7832isolated?
Busy as H in summer and winter. Amazing hiking and skiing area.
I moved from major cities 25 years ago.....isolated from crime, traffic, road rage, noise, pollution, urban stress is a great isolation
Business loan? Personal loan?
@ we are currently in so much medical debt, there’s no way we’ll dig ourselves out in this lifetime. Maybe next lifetime.
You are the kind of people we want to remain in this nation and more importantly in a small community. Thank you for not selling out to a corporate entity. May the Lord send someone who has a heart like yours that truly cares for the people that can take ownership and continue your legacy of serving and caring. How grateful I am for folks like you, what a grand example!
Such teamwork and dedication for the town you love. Much luck to you in it's future!

I crying because of this so happy ending. I'm so glad they're sticking there for Silverton. That town sounds so wonderful.
I go to Lake City, Creede, Silverton and Ouray once a year. I love those little mountain towns. Everyone is always nice and friendly.
@jeffdurall8353 I worked at the VC (Vacquero Conquistadore - cowboy conqueror or empire builder) Guest Ranch two school summers in the 70s. What a nice area. Not sure if that place is still there.
Love how businesses like this are the heartbeat of our local communities.
This made me cry
One of those Grandkids needs to become a pilot and start air freighting up there.
0:24 "married to Darlene" Is very similar to the shopkeeper's response to Anton Chigurh in movie no country for old man😂
"So you married into it?"
@@VictorSGonzo”if that’s the way you wanna put it”
That’s so wonderful selfless act wonderful people. We need more like these 2
I am a retired 61 yr old Tennessean. Former EMT/FF for over 30 years. I am a country raised guy. I would come there and work at that store and live in that community ! Wish they had a job opening and a place to stay. Lord bless that place and those people.
Come to Memphis and get a slab of ribs
@@TommyTomTompkins how nice of you to offer him free ribs

Beautiful story of community and kindness. Thank you.
Lovely story. ❤❤❤❤ Karen from Canada
That's hard living much respect and best of luck to the people in that small town.
I lived in Ouray in '74 and again in '90. The store in Ouray was great. Still the same family my last visit in 2017.
That's a great idea. Maybe that's common to do. It makes sense to me.
I spent a lot of time in that area. We used to own a cabin we built up above the town. Been in that store many times and I’m glad they’re sticking around.
Great job,
Well done to you both 👍🏴🇪🇦
I wish I could buy this store myself. I cut my teeth in the grocery business in my teens and early twenties and I’ve continued to work in retail, but I’ve always gone that extra step to be kind to someone. It makes all the difference in the world
This little grocery store of mine Im going to let it shine
✨
Just from the thumbnail I could tell this was Silverton. I remember visiting many years back and the drive into town on top of the mountains looking down at the city way below was amazing!
Wow
Never heard of this place, after looking it up, seems like a cool place
I just love this idea of the old mom-and-pop grocery stores. Boy if I'm ever out that way I will sure stop in. If you ever heard of put that up for sale I would sure like to try to figure out how to buy it
Nice, I'll have to check it out next time I'm up there for work. I live an hour away, near Durango.
Thank you for uploading this video, it's a shame more people don't think about this anymore 😢🙏👍😊
