I could watch this video over and over again! Nothing like a man or collector I should say, doing what He enjoys most in life. Found you guys and gals a few years ago and I have been watching since that day.
Hey Ben, I recently found your channel and have been binge watching your builds over the past few weeks and I have to say... you're insane. In the best possible way! Dont ever change! I appreciate your appreciation of beautiful tools too, it makes your videos that much more interesting!
I love that you always talk up the tools you use and trust. no matter where they came from. it makes it easier to buy tools. i learned my lesson about cheap drills and drill bits for sure!
Ben, you really need to contact Nick Offerman. He loves tools much in the same way you do. His ultimate focus is on canoes, and he considers luthery to be self-abuse, but fine woodworking is something he's famous for.
I am building a collection of hand powered tools, so that I can work at night or very early morning without really annoying the neighbours (house is semi-detached).
Using even big augers is a delight, especially with the beautifully precise through holes and depths of blind holes.
You repeatedly say that you are very lucky: I think that you have largely made your own luck by working hard and to a plan which accommodates pure whimsy. This produces a rich vein of resources -you cannot predict when a rare tool or device will come in handy, but every time it does, you feel “lucky”.
Favourite moment of every Crimson video at the moment is when Ben laughs while playing with fire. He just looks and sounds so bloody happy
I agree with you! I've come to the point where I'm watching the beginning of the video and know exactly when to say, "Burn it " and "Ha ha Yay!". I say it out loud with every video . 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for the tour. I've actually already had a mini tour by James when you weren't there!! I think the oldest tool I've got is a beautifully crafted handsaw bought from Wilko on Chester high street 5 years ago. Lovely plastic handle and it's original cardboard sheath. And my garage is damp so it's getting a nice, rusty patina.
A glimpse into the mind of Ben. Obsession, what obsession..?? Absolutely wonderful video for all of us tool lovers out here that may or may not have bought stuff from the vintage tool shop (ok, I have) and enjoy watching someone work in wood and talk about what you need to get from a lump of wood to something beautiful.

Having discovered the excellent podcasts on guitar building its inspired me to step into making my own guitar once I’ve built a workshop first !

I love tour videos and I’ve been waiting for this one for some time. All of those tools behind you in your videos have been anonymously teasing us until now. My top 10 tools for guitar building would be: low angle jack plane, smoothing plane, low angle block plane, Japanese ryoba saw, Japanese flush cut saw, various sandpapers, jewelers saw, sharp chisel set, bandsaw/jigsaw (on a budget), router, drill.
I appreciate you Ben! Nice to know I'm not the only 'rare bird'. I've been rescuing old tools for 50 some years. 8) --gary USA.

The video I have wanted to see for a long time and it was such a pleasure to watch. I always wonder who the previous owners were of the vintage and antique tools in Ben's collections and what they have been used to make down the years. The stories they could tell would be fascinating.
With a hammer (rock), metal and fire you can make a chisel. With hammer, chisel, metal and fire you can make a file. With hammer, chisel, file, metal and fire you can make every other tool known to man. OR... you can raid Ben's workshop while he's not looking. B-) Great job Ben.

everytime i put this channel on the background when i have to do guitar repair work im like... most people who go bald just wear hats eternally through the hot summer days and formal events....but this guy... this guy is fuckin owning it and killin it
awesome collection, my indispensable tools are! router, band saw, sander, and a drill. no more electric, # 3 and 4 hand planes, chisells, fretting tools of course, fret end file fret press leveling files, welding pen, a caliper, straight edge and fret holed ruler and measure rulers of course, measure measure cut. i´ve build 3 guitars so far with just that!

My grandfather had a plane collection- though he collected everything, actually- and if I recall, he had around 350-400 at the time he died in 1979. He got started with a couple that his father gave him which were brought over from Norway to the US in 1901, and they were antique then. I wish I had more photos of his collection, but I only have one, featuring a display he used to set up at the Rogers (town in Minnesota) Annual Threshing Show. The show was put on by the Anoka (another town in Minnesota) Small Engine Club. He had a half dozen of those, too, as well as two restored antique farm tractors. He also had a hammer collection, but I'm not sure how many he had of those, but I know he had at least one of each and every size and weight available to the month in which he died from a catastrophic/widow maker heart attack at the age of 71. Grandpa was a master carpenter by trade, and I always loved hanging out with him in his two workshops- the outside shop was for wood working and the basement shop was for everything else. He restored watches and clocks as a hobby, as well as rock polishing and collecting. My favorite oddity he had was the saw bill from a sawfish- it was well over a meter and a half long, and hung on the wall of the basement shop. My second favorite thing was his chair and ottoman made completely from antlers, with moose antlers forming the back, and elk antlers for the arms, deer antlers for the base supports, etc. then upholstered in buckskin. My brother has the set.

Crimson Custom Guitars thank you very much- I was only 13 when he died but it still seems like yesterday , even though I am 54 now. He was half Swedish and half Norwegian- a combination not often found in nature- very quiet until he had something to say, so I learned how to really listen when he did speak and learned a lot of important stuff before he left us. And because I know you would also have liked to hang out with him, I know I would like to hang out with you- and turn green with envy over all those beautiful tools!!!!!
This has me so excited at the possibility of you taking on the challenge of building a guitar using only hand tools. Since many viewers may have financial limits, I think a fun challenge (as a viewer) would be taking a monetary amount (say 500 pounds?) and selecting hand tools that can be purchased for roughly the monetary amount. Obviously, using your very own Crimson tools would be ideal. I think it would be an great way to plug vintage tool shop as well.
I would also love to see some more cigar box guitars, just because you make it look like a lot of fun!

I’ve got fairly limited tools. A small bandsaw a pillar drill some planes. A Shinto saw rasp and a few crimson tools. Oh and quite a few home made jugs and tools like my notched straight edge. You’d be more than welcome to come build a guitar here if you ever visit minnesota. Perhaps when you come to do a build with Matt Cremona 😉
It would be awesome to watch Ben build a guitar using only hand tools; kinda like he did when they had that cigar box guitar build challenge a few years ago! I like using hand tools when I can, also I don't have all the fancy power tools either! LOL
I'd love to see Ben building a guitar hand tools only from reclaimed pallet wood... maybe in my tiny workshop in pompey!
Japanese saws are nice in that they have so narrow cut, which means less energy needed for the cut (I have split 1,5 meters of apple tree with one). The downside is that they don't stay sharp very long and at least the ones I have can't be sharpened, so the blades become scrap metal. European traditional saws can be used daily for what 200 years, sharpened every few weeks. I really like that kind of tools. The point hardened hardware store saws have their place too, and that's building site, but for woodworking it really gives a lot to learn how to properly use and sharpen saws. I have some Pax and Lynx saws.

You should sell your file handles individually. Love them. I'd put them on all my files and rasps.
My first guitar was done with no powered tools, bar a cordless drill. A cheap Wilkos set of chisels and a tenon saw, scroll saw, 3 quick clamps and a hammer. A set of forstner bits from screwfix and a set of cheap drill bits and a craft knife set from poundland. My first buy after i built it was a jig saw then a router. It was bliss. Lol
Robert Murphy I’m doing the same right now mate... pound shop epoxy. Block plane and rasp from wilkos and a Chinese eBay special power drill and Forster bits.... I dream about routers!!! It’s fun though.. I’m currently doing a jazz 7 string!!! Love to see your results.. I think doing within them limitations gives an interesting results!
@@charliebowen5071 reasonable Erbauer routers in a few of the Cash Converters for £60 new. They stock a few new brand goods now and then, just have to keep an eye out for them
Narex is actually Czech. Give us at least that, Ben! :D On a different note, I'm not sure if I should tell you this, but I think you don't have enough planes. Specifically, I noticed you don't have anything similar to a Veritas detail palm plane. Apparently they are a lot nicer to use than normal violin planes, though somehow I get the feeling you already know about them.

I love how you manage to make these tools seem so interesting :) I happen to think they actually ARE interesting but i'm sure that puts us in the minority, who was it that said 'if you find yourself agreeing with the majority, you need to have a rethink' possibly Mark Twain? you will know who it was I am sure :) anyway.... fascinating stuff thank you for making and posting.
Ben, there is no such thing as an "unnecessarily beautiful tool." I would consider your tools functional art that passes their beauty and your skill on to whatever project you use them on.

Hey Ben, I was wondering if you do requests? I and several others have always wanted a thin body telecaster. But the closest I’ve seen is the belly-cut bodies. Could you do a thin body tele similar to the Ibanez thin body guitars? Moving the electronic components seems like it would be the most difficult part. Love your videos. 🤘🏽

Tool envy? Oh yes! I love the X+1 rule! My father-in-law says "Never do a job without in new tool!"
Number 1 most essential tool is the random orbital sander. Then a #4 plane.. I can make do with almost anything else.

Narex are Czech made Ben, not Austrian. Got some of their chisels and gouges recently to keep me occupied (along with some planes bought at vintagetoolshop, Saffy was very helpful by the way) with my Spidercaster (photos later) while confined at home (France). I think my neighbours start to hate me, though.
Ashley Isles tools are fantastic, the steel is rock hard.
I've been using their chisels for nearly a decade and I totally agree, fantastic tools. B

The Case of the Missing Guitar Case remains unsolved unfortunately … It will be solved eventually with suitable aplomb eventually though by Inspector Croweseau. Maybe we will see how many unnecessary tools can be used in it's construction ...

I'm looking to build a small workshop in my garden. More like your smaller one that you built in march, as opposed to the bigger one.
Question: what is the min size for a new hobbyist builder, and what are the essential tool stations that, as a luthier, you cannot live without?
I'm thinking Bench, bandsaw, tablesaw, drill press, sander with the walls covered in shelves and hooks.
You've done it twice in a short period. Apart from space, what were the things that you changed bacuase they were show stoppers in the tinier shed?

Have Ben watching faithfully for a couple years now. Really enjoy your work. Goal is to be fully prepped for the GGB-along 2021.
And I will come down for a course when the plague abates. Just trying to figure out how I can spare 3 months (timewise and income-wise).
Finally, I'd also like to invest in helping would-be luthiers in taking your courses. I can't afford to fund them completely (I'm still trying to figure out how I can do it myself), but at the same time, I am more fortunate than many, and would be willing to pay an affordable into a fund to help budding luthiers. My philosophy here is that if I can't go on a Crimson course, I'd feel good to help someone else do it.

A challenge? OK - I'm only 30 minutes away, my 'workshop' is a space in my office, about 4ft square - I have a handful of files, a couple of chisels, some sandpaper and a rusty saw - you in?!
I do have a Crimson notched straight edge and a levelling beam, but using them may be considered cheating :-)
I was just wondering the other day what a pro could build with my tools. In the middle of my third hobby instrument build now. I'd love to see you go at it, but chicago isn't quite the driving distance. You could replicate the tool list though and only work off of that.
I hope it is the same thing as giving a pro guitarist a budget instrument.. should be a fun build series if I can get it organised. A trip all the way over there would be fun, though not that feasible irl.. sadly. B
I won't give my list of what the minimum tools needed to build a guitar. But what's often missing from these lists is clamps. You need clamps and more clamps, after that you need to start buying clamps.

Do you send off your saws to get sharpened or do you sharpen them yourself

As interesting as it would be to see you make an instrument using only hand tools, what about one using only power tools? The basic stuff would obviously be very easy, but could you add in your usual level of detail and intricacy, never going near a chisel - watching you do a fret board with a power planer would be fun!!!!
Glad I'm not the only one who sees the utility in a router table, but is also intensly wary of them. It's rather shocking the first time that tiny bit rips a 7 lb piece of wood out of your hands and throws it clear across the work shop. (I was trying to take far too much off in a single pass, user mistake.)
Not done with the video yet but tell me, what's the oldest tool you have. And what's the oldest you still use regularly

I’m quite shocked by bens carving rack... the chisel seems to be standing on their edges!!
I got a Shinto rasp file from Ben's shop (www.crimsonguitars.com - thanks, Ben et al.) and have found it to be very useful indeed. I've introduced others to it as the essential tool you didn't even know you needed.
