The thing about Tanaka is he's not average by any metric. He's actually above average all things considered. If you look at the stats, Tanaka is consistently second in most things involving volleyball. Power, Speed, Receiving. His Game Sense is his worse stat. He just feels average which is incrediblely relatable being around people who are specialists.
Another fun fact: Tanaka is the only player who has played every single minute of every single match for Karasuno starting from the practice match against Aoba Johsai in Season 1 Episode 6-7 to this match. If you're wondering about the rest of the starting players, Asahi and Nishinoya rejoined the club after the Aoba Johsai practice match so they missed out on that game. Kageyama got subbed out vs Johzenji (nosebleed) and Shiratorizawa (fatigue) Hinata also got subbed out for Narita vs Johzenji since Sugawara was the setter Daichi got subbed out vs Wakunan (injury) Tsukki got subbed out vs Shiratorizawa (injury)
"The average guy", who of us haven't been on Tanaka's position? This episode is so real for me. Tanaka is one of my favorite characters, I love this scene for him, his motivation and dedication and his unbreaking will. And the fact that they took so long to bring this up is just for the better.
7:19 This is Daichi's first ever back attack. They cut this from anime but Karasuno had specifically planned to use it as a surprise attack on the rotation that Atsumu was serving in order to cut him off at one.
Love Asahi just spiking that ball with the emergency set from the other side of the net. And the whole tanaka thing,this is one of the best episodes this season. Are you gonna do any other sport anime reaction later?
The whole heartbroken sub story is also so great. It is proof of the superb writing of Haikyuu's author. She said at the very end, she got heart broken. because after watching Tanaka accomplish is goal through sheer effort, she understood he would eventually get Shimizu through sheer efforr.
Fun fact: (theres some AMVs and edits with this scene thats show this) in some moments in the training Camp Tanaka tries this seeing Bokuto playing. So this isnt away, but is Just an detail in the background. In manga, furudate gives more Focus on that

But I guess it's TH-cam's doing 😅 Of course I felt bad for Tanaka, but as long as the ball gets up, I don't mind if Nishinoya "steals" his recieve. After all, volleyball is a team sport. Someone has to get the ball up and then connect. It doesn't matter who recieves, sets, spikes. The point goes to the whole team.
