The thing about Tanaka is he's not average by any metric. He's actually above average all things considered. If you look at the stats, Tanaka is consistently second in most things involving volleyball. Power, Speed, Receiving. His Game Sense is his worse stat. He just feels average which is incrediblely relatable being around people who are specialists.
"The average guy", who of us haven't been on Tanaka's position? This episode is so real for me. Tanaka is one of my favorite characters, I love this scene for him, his motivation and dedication and his unbreaking will. And the fact that they took so long to bring this up is just for the better.

The whole heartbroken sub story is also so great. It is proof of the superb writing of Haikyuu's author. She said at the very end, she got heart broken. because after watching Tanaka accomplish is goal through sheer effort, she understood he would eventually get Shimizu through sheer efforr.

But I guess it's TH-cam's doing 😅 Of course I felt bad for Tanaka, but as long as the ball gets up, I don't mind if Nishinoya "steals" his recieve. After all, volleyball is a team sport. Someone has to get the ball up and then connect. It doesn't matter who recieves, sets, spikes. The point goes to the whole team.
