07 sti is a good choice, find one that isnt married to a cobb and if its modified, make sure the guy has receipts of all the stuff done. 2.5 liters are alright, the 2.0 are more reliable and able to hold more power. To prevent ringland, rod knock, just keep up with oil and stay on top of it, also dont WOT your engine
Another piece of advice, don’t advance timing on UEL’s. You’ll lean out cylinders 2 and 4 and blow up faster then you can blink. Killer B EL’s, air/oil separator, aftermarket oil cooler, and s quality protune. Can make max gains on stock turbo without blowing it up that way
Bugeye Bryan WOT is fine, just dont over load the car, as in high gear, low rpm wot. This can all be avoided. First things first for any EJ is getting proper maintenance and on time, secondly, get an AOS. No knock means no issues.
You got lucky on the can gear bolts, first time I pulled an ej they took like 2 hours and the last one was stripped to shit and had to weld on a nut to the bolt to get it out lol
on the jdm ej20's the cam's have a hex so you can put an adjustable on with a breaker bar. Unfortunately these ej25's suck balls getting the gear bolts off and that special tool barely works if its set in

Zach Knee it was tuned for it but there was a cap that I removed when I rotated the EWG 180 degrees so it gave a full 24 psi to the block during a datalog and that was it. Lots of blocks can hold it at least once or twice but mine didn’t so now I have an IAG block and it held the 24 no problem.
You can get bulletproof piston and rods for $900 for an STI. However, labor to install properly is usually almost $4k. Even main bearings are only $60. Labor is the killer....
Great video as always! Did you have list all the parts you had to buy? I noted some of the replacement parts that were mentioned but would like to see the overall list. I'm sure it would be helpful for everyone. Thanks!

@@nwbklr dude there are early symptoms. It won't just "pop" randomly with a broken ringland (you can still drive it with a cracked ringland depending on severity) unless you throw a rod.
It’s pretty simple, don’t advance timing with UEL’s, you’ll lean out on cylinders 2/4 with the long runners and pop a piston faster then you can blink. Switch to Killer B EL’s, enjoy the power gains and faster spool, and worry less about blowing it up. UEL’s are the dumbest design, Subaru did a big F there. @@warock567 it's an OTS (off the shelf) tune. Meaning it's made to fit all WRXs. While this is good for usability and availability while people get their new Accessports, the tune is not designed for your engines specific variables. Every engine runs different, especially after modifying. Which is why it's an important to get a protune or a Map tuned specifically for your engine.
Advancing timing with UEL’s is dumb on a stock engine anyway, banks with the long runners are prone to detonation stock let alone tuned where they run on the leaner side... EL’s and a quality protune is what you need to not blow up
@@warock567 there fucking shit, its called an actual dyno tune with a pro tuner if you can afford the car and parts afford a good tune from someone and maybe your car wont blow up.
So I must ask, should you rebuild or replace the engine in any wrx or sti? And should you rebore the short block? If the short block is rebored, should it run higher than stock power, at stock power or detune it to run well under stock power?
Honestly I felt like He wasn’t ProTuned he was Cobb Tuned and second He rips his car non stop through snow ice etc. And another reason is He probably had it on sports sharp everytime he drives so hes full boosting 24/7 ej motors are reliable. So I've followed about 4 different guides and have a 2015 sti that I cannot get the engine out of. Even this video misses removing clutch fork pin and briefly hits at the turbo flange but I can't think of anything stopping my engine from coming off the transmission but if anyone has any info let me know on what I could be missing

Bugeye Bryan Yes it’s a ej257 and they come cast. Supposedly the 2019 has revised pistons but some say these are still cast too.
@@Dave-so7sf 😕 makes me not want to get one😥
Bugeye Bryan STIs are kinda one big crap shoot. Most of them last at least 100k when modded properly. This kid is kinda a dummy with no supporting mods like air oil separator, larger intercooler, and don’t think it’s protuned. The not protuned part I could be wrong. I’m glad I bought mine but it is one big money pit. God forbid if the motor does blow there goes 10k out of my pocket. If I was to do it all over again I would buy a Audi RS3 and leave it stock. IG @subidoosti
@@Dave-so7sf You're right he doesnt have supporting mods, I found a 2015 sti with a cobb, the cobb kinda pushed me away from the car cuz of how they're known for blowing engines if not done properly
Bugeye Bryan Cobbs fine, as long as it’s used to protune lol
Nice, hope this never happens to me (2019) fingers crossed.
How’s the car
Leave it with factory tune and downshift to 4K RPM or above if you feel like flooring it.... Gotta pay to play.
I wonder how much a job like this Cost.
buddy should start a youtube page he knows mad shit!
How much total $$ is an engine rebuild?
depends on whats upgraded
Please tell me how much$$$ was all this to start saving money 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Learyam to what tell you how much money it is Incase your motor blows ?
Vi Tempz iV lol all us EJ owners want to be prepared for the worst. Probably going to be into this for 10k by the time the motor goes back in. I’ve got quotes before on a IAG short block assembly installed.
@@Dave-so7sf 10k ? U r fucking kidding. Do you get a brand spanking new 0 mile engine w that?
Rebuild of og?
They're just cast pistons they're not verystrong" so are there affordable* aftermarket fixes
How much did this cost?
totally a jedi
Elh is better for performance and reliability
Joshua Hellis this comment needs to be pinned! Advancing timing on UEL’s is bad on cast pistons.... should just switch to Killer B EL’s, enjoy the spool and power gains, and not have to worry about blowing up....
Driveitsideways 1 yeah I have Perrin elh that I bought used but I also have a built motor and I still don’t want to have uelh for autocross and track days let alone this heat in az
Joshua Hellis cylinders 2 and 4 thank you lol, those long runners on those cylinders on a hot day means lots of premature wear. EL’s sound like a actual rally x car too lol. I don’t own Subaru’s anymore (Speed6, it’s a semi adult car 😜) but I burned my ringlands out on my old ej255 swapped gf8
Driveitsideways 1 yeah I came
From
Muscle cars to jeep to focus st to my subie
Joshua Hellis I’ve always had Japanese or German cars. All my friends have GTI’s, one just sold his GTI and picked up a 2017 Audi S3. Currently sits at stage 2 with a upgraded intercooler. That car is nutty quick, over 400 hp/tq...
You know watching this every time where you say "why did Subaru do this" the answer is to save money :( Sad but the truth. Cast pistons (saved money), bad screws in a weird spot (save money). Funny how companies spend 100 of millions and then make a decision to save a million that screws over every customer :/
Long the long videos!!!!
mine just broke at 46k...
1hour nice
content isnt nice but video is good.
Ran across this info after watching the video...
Got me curious as if this issue applies to the new 2.4L turbo engine in the 2020 Outback and Ascent.
www.comeanddriveit.com/engine/subaru-ringland-failure
If it does then Subaru should be banned from ever making any automobile again.
Toss those gaskets!
I hope my ACT can use 60,000miles lol
Never mind I just seen it 2019
Do they have a sign in the shop that posts labor rates? For example $100 per hour, $200 per hour if you want to watch and ask questions. Kinda like this>>

Glass engine ej257
Dude please never tie down a car like this again. Super unsafe.
Cheap ass tune lasted 4 months. Bang
