    I've heard the most common thing to make them fail is lugging the engine. That is boosting under too high a gear; while cruising and then flooring it while at speed at say, 4th or 5th gear instead of downshifting to 2nd or 3rd then applying throttle.

    • @petkokrushev3840
      @petkokrushev3840 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, you are correct. Engine lurking is a killer for any turbo engine

  • @Daemione
    @Daemione 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yup, I've got a couple pistons sitting as paperweights & ashtrays that look exactly like that. I was startled at how short a time that block lasted, and I made sure to do EVERYTHING right - fuel, maintenance, oil, tuning, etc. 18psi on a VF, 290whp, no knock.

    I love MRT, but watching this video makes me nervous for my STi with 92k on the clock. I've been saving money for the inevitable but I've been driving these cars for 19 yrs and have only blown one of my 7 wrx/sti ringlands. I had no idea how to really drive a turbo Subaru when I was 22 (coming from the NA RS model) and probably lugged the crap out of the engine too many times looking back on it. You guys need to be here in the States!

      Hell yea, the peanut generation is the damn best. At least you can still get the forged build engines, the ej207 is still a new short block option to buy. Remember when they used to factory close deck too?

      Nope. The 207 has forged pistons, (v7 gen), lower compression ratio, semi closed deck and can rev higher. And costs the same to buy as a new short block. Bought as a complete long block motor the sti will cost more.

    Can you make a series of videos that pertain to regular Subaru motors?
    I have a used 2004 Subaru Forester X 2.5l SOHC w\ Auto Trans that was abused in terms of oil and trans fluid changes and basic maintenance and I want and I have to do a basic re-seal to keep it going and learn from it but I stress over what the kondition of the motor will be after opening it up watching this video. I have to live from this car and so far have not been able to get a car of any type donated to $400 like I got this car so any projeckts I have to open and klose the project each day.

    My ej251 is at 235xxx miles. Every single gasket is gone and is on its 2nd failing head gasket. I have blow by and compression loss and carbon build up on the rings. No catch cans so it goes into the intake and exhaust.
    That engine still runs.
    Subaru is a different company now run by different breed of people.

    • @CuttinChris
      @CuttinChris 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pfft my ej251 is at 254k. On its 2nd head gasket has 13% ring blow by on all cylinders burns a quart of oil every 500 miles no catch cans and I turbo charged it with a wrx td04 on 5psi with a voltage clamp and 10:1 fmu and it was a freaking fun ride till I blew a ringland in cyl 4 130psi compression then went another 600 miles and I finally blew it lol. Now I'm doing a 255 hybrid block with my 251 heads

    Took a long drive with my Subaru for about an hour then came to a stop and got a check engine light and misfire check engine light was PCV blow by! Car pulls the same and no decrease in performance, so I just vented the PCV to atmosphere and runs better. Mines a hybrid build and I heard they have blow by problems

    • @MV60
      @MV60 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've got a franken-engine too, an ej257 block with ej20 everything else. Best part is when you have the ej20 sump you don't need to worry so much about cracked pickup tubes. And your comment got me thinking, I did have a custom catch can fabricated and I installed it to filter the top of the crank T, which is crank case under boost venting, but after quite a while there was almost nothing in the can. I then peaked at the side tube that is vent under negative manifold pressure through the pvc under the throttle body and it was very wet with oil. So I've switched them around and haven't as yet had a misfire code. It was always cylinder 4 misfire, and it happened while the car was still cold and warming up, so after the car was sitting all night and light loads. Once it was misfire all cylinders. But yea, it wasn't too common, probably about 4 times last year, but I just think you're on to something. Get a catch can. :)

    At 75k. COBB Stage2 for about 2 years; using very little to no oil at all between changes and excellent maintenance. Just had a new OEM wire harness install, then the WRX overheats badly (& p0117), for the first time ever. Stopped and cooled it, seems fine...but just to be sure went to Subaru, and they say blown head gasket; though I never noticed any loss of power. Waiting to hear any day about the pistons, etc.

I've already read a lot about the EJ25, if I get one first thing I would be doing would be the safety upgrades such as AOS, cyl 4 cooling mod, equal length headers and killerB pickup tube. The thing is, is it worth getting one if I don't know how to do the maintenance myself and there aren't specialized shops for subarus near ?

Because we like the characteristics of the engine the sound of ej the classic rumble that engine give and most of the power delivery that motor produce sure it's not fast just like an evo but we love the engine even though it have in perfection (ringland) nothing more nothing less.

    I have my 12 s edition WRX and it is having issue of burning oil. I only bought it in April with 80,000 on the clock. It is tuned to Cobb stage one. I took it for first service to WRX specialist in Melbourne and asked him to have a good look and notify me of any abnormalities with the car and they did the service and found no oil in it and he told me that the motor sounds bit off beat and they found some glittery stuff. any ways been taking car back and forth to the dealership, they been topping up the oil now it was the fourth time I took it there and left it and told em that m not picking it up unless they are going to fix the issue. See what happens next. Can you suggest something? Would it be something similar like this? Lucky I bought 3 years extended warranty on it.

    It has gone well for a few months but now has a slight hesitation at 2900rpm. There doesn't seem to be miss when this happens, just a slight hesitation for a second or so. I did recently run the tank quite low.(light was on for about 5k's) It idles perfect. From what I have read it sounds like the VVCS sensor? Is there anything else you can advise on reducing the risk? Or shall I start saving for forged Pistons now? Lol many thanks

    • @hoost3056

      ScoobySTI Chris the things that crack the ring lands are the rings butting against each other during high boost/high heat situations. Open up the ring gaps and the engine will live a a lot longer. GM LS engines do the same thing, that's why boosted engines get the ring gaps opened up or a real high mileage engine is found ( they don't get race ready until after 100,000 miles )

      the cost of the car. New, presumably. He ain't wrong though. I love the STi, it's like the last of the OG tuner cars from the mid 2000's. But the ringland problem is absolutely unacceptable. I wouldn't recommend a STi to anyone if they didnt have around 7k in the bank to build the motor after it goes.

    I have a 2017 STI (stock engine) & considering the GFB Respons TMS BOV (or Turbosmart equivelant). I'm just looking for some sound for now.
    I've read this mod wont require a tune, would you agree with that? Also would it be safe to run the valve open/closed in most conditions without issue?

    question for anyone who might see this even though this video is super old. I've got a 2013 STI and I almost got stuck in some really wet snow. the only way i was able to get the car to move was by getting it near red line. the rev limiter stopped it from going over red line but i had to run it right under 7k rpm for a good 30-45ish seconds. I haven't noticed any major oil consumption but I've been paranoid about it ever since and can't even drive the car enough to monitor oil burn due to the pandemic. Anyone think i should be worried about ringland failure? Thanks in advance!

    • @Invitingsauce
      @Invitingsauce 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      canchume nope, it will leak eventually. Either internally, which is hard to notice. Or externally which will start as just an oily residue on the bottom of the block right where the heads meet up. Single layer inferior gasket design. The only real fix is new gaskets. Fel-pro makes a good one. It can be done with the engine still in the car but it’s a little more challenging. About $1,700-$2,000 to have a shop do it in the USA.

    • @MV60
      @MV60 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Won't stop the oil consumption, every car consumes oil, but if you install such a thing, don't get one of those return to sump aos systems that have the pretty thing sitting on your filler tube for example, they'll just fill your oil with water. The humble mechanic has a latest video showing him emptying a catch can, you'll be surprised at what pours out, and a return to sump aos, all of that is what would be going back there.

    Ok now wonder my subi is burning so much oil, 1 month after an oil change the oil level went down to half way, some people were telling me it might have been a bad turbo deal but I'm pretty sure it's the rings after watching this video, I appreciate what your guys do at MRT, quality videos wish I would have found you guys sooner, does anyone know how much would it cost to replace piston rings? I'm planning on building the EJ25 in about 2 years after I graduate college so I'm not sure if I should wait till then, or replace them now. I don't run the car hard, but one time I noticed smoke come out the exhaust when I did a pull in second gear, i was at about 6k rpms

    • @whocares5188
      @whocares5188 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      3Revs it not just pistons. When you go to build there will be a lot of little shit you should replace. Timing chain, oil pump and so on. Around 8k to rebuild and that's not with a turbo or anything

    • @tschaderdstrom2145
      @tschaderdstrom2145 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not likely. What oil are you running, and how often do you change it and check it? How much do you add between changes? Have you had the compression tested? Do you do any oil analysis? I have a 2007 that has 115k miles and has been stage 2 for about 75k of them. No issues.

    • @MRTPerformanceAustralia

      ringland failure is a whole lot about how the car is driven and how and who modifies it and their knowledge of ignition control
      ;)

    • @mannygonzales2009
      @mannygonzales2009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @MRTPerformanceAustralia
      @MRTPerformanceAustralia  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not necessarily..........
      the piston failure is a Subaru weakness that is accelerated by poor mods and poor tuning
      a FMIC wont eliminate that
      :(

  • @93ChayZ
    @93ChayZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ringland Failure is WAY LESS LIKELY when the car is actually tuned PROPERLY, any tune is better than stock, it’s actually more likely to break a piston STOCK, it needs an AOS, and Tune, period.
