    The singer's name was Clare Torry, she was (and still is) a tiny little english woman! She was a scat singer and was brought in for the day, she was told to go through the emotions of death (but use no words), she laid this iconic vocal in 2 takes, took her daily stipend, and shuffled off to the pub.

      She ended up getting song-writing credits for this and for an album that stayed in the billboard top 100 for nearly a decade that is no small amount.

    • @jlr108
      @jlr108 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ChadWiggin Yes, but she had to go to court to get that and credit for vocal composition, and even then, that was more than thirty years after the album came out. Originally she just received the standard Sunday studio flat fee of 30 pounds.

    Great reaction!
    The small contingent of Pink Floyd reaction junkies out here search TH-cam for just the reaction you presented us. It doesn't matter to us if the audio quality is crisp, you have a flashy green screen, or even if you 'get' the band's message, We want to see the same visceral emotion we experienced when we first listened to it and you delivered big time!

    This song is about death and the battle within the soul near the end. And within her voice lies the battle and the peaceful end. A true masterpiece. I can imagine the end being chaos and calm and everything in-between, and she nails it. Good reaction man.

  • @jimirayo

  • @jimangela4589
    @jimangela4589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Yes! Good catch. The third verse to "Breathe" (called Breathe (Reprise)) follows immediately after "Time". And don't listen to naysayers about pausing. The Floyd is a lot to take in. I'm interested in your initial thoughts not the song. I can and do listen to The Floyd any day every day. Pause whatever it feels. Clare Torry is a session singer brought in specifically for this track. She spent a few hours in the studio made up her own vocals on the spot, did a few takes and left. She never thought her vocals would see the Dark Side until she picked up the album in a store one day. Just one of those serendipitous things that is music gold. Like catching lightening in a bottle. Great reaction.

    Your reaction to Great Gig in the Sky is almost exactly what the band is said to have experienced at the end of the recording session. Claire Torry's singing stunned the band into silence. She actually thought they were upset and went into the control booth and apologized to everyone then left right away. She never expected her singing to make it on to the album, and only found out when she bought a copy of the album when it came out.

    Hey, i love your reactions. I hope you will please not listen to folks who tell you not to pause. Many of us grew up with these songs and have listened to the hundreds if not thousands of times because they're so great. But watching someone enjoy these songs for the first time is what brings me to these videos. You show your clear appreciation for and understanding of the music, and that's what's hot. If you're like many of us, which I think you are, you'll go back to these songs over and over and then you can just listen to them through. For now, your excitement in discovery puts joy in the world. Please keep it up.

    This album is one of the mostly unspoken influences in hiphop, the samples, the textures, the big drums, the psychedelic sound, the synths. So ahead of its time, when you listen to it in full you hear so many innovative sounds that are still being repeated and evolved today. Truly one of the greatest musical acts in history.

    7:18...."It's too much..." - NO, it's not too much,...It's "Exactly" the correct amount. (Which is what put these guys on a different level from anyone else)

    the back story for great gig in the sky was the song depicts life from birth to death and the vocals on this song were spot on and was recorded on the first try.

    I cannot WAIT to hear you react to Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Dogs. Two of Pink Floyd's most awesome masterpieces. Be sure to hit those two in your Floyd journey at some point.

    That constant ticking sound, in the beginning, was a bass guitar with the strings clamped together. The part that you said sounded like breathe is actually breathe reprise.

    Welcome to what Pink Floyd does. They bring out emotion with their music. They are the best at making you feel the song, They make you not just hear, and feel it, they make you see, smell, and taste it as well.

    OMG loved your reaction Miss Clare Torri, so happy you listened to the original cut. A lot of other vocalists have done it since just does not have the magic this does. The Classic's It was on vinyl the cuts flowed into each other. You listened to the whole side then turned it over and listened to that side. Also notice When you are seeing the art that would have been on the cover. That was a huge part of waiting to get a new album you opened it up they folded out the surprise of what was inside. Cheers

    My reaction would be exactly the same as yours, to these fantastic songs, bro. And so glad you played them back to back too. For they compliment each other well, in my humble opinion.

    Great album ever made. I history of mankind. The great gig is about dying... man.. phases of denial... read about them and listen to the emotions of the voice again.. goes through all of em.. in order.. until acceptance..

    The time is gone. The 'song' is over. Thought I'd something more to say... It's just one great poetic, philosophical lyric after another, with Floyd. :)

    I was a rather hc fan of PF back in the 80's. Been trying to explore away since then, all that metal and rave and indie & stuff, but still THIS music I have heard so many times still sends the same shivers down my spine.
    Love your reaction video btw!

    This is a song that if you close your eyes, you can be inside the music as it takes you somewhere...

    What you should remember is that DSOTM is a muse by the band about life, and it was an album, not a CD. Side one is a journey through life.
    Birth, Breathe (childhood lyric.) Adulthood, On the Run. Aging, Time and the reprise into Breathe (lyrics now reflecting older person) and death The Great Gug in the Sky.
    Side two of the album are missives about some things all people face or share commonly in life, Wealth, War, Art, Mania and Existential thoughts.
