Wow, I can see by the other comments that I'm probably in the minority here by liking this version more than the original. The original, sung by Clare Torry, is very impressive. She's got a beautiful voice and belted this song out on the spot in like two takes. The Pulse version is more polished but also very beautiful, it also makes me cry no matter how many times I hear it. The original never does. Anyway, glad you liked it. ✌🏽💗
I personally prefer this version too. But of course the original is absolutely amazing too and Clare Torry of course deserves the main credit for the song.
Clare Tory’s is an entirely different level of greatness when you consider that she made it up in real time in that studio in just a couple takes. This was good too.

Angela, I like the Delicate Sound of Thunder the best. Post Waters Floyd the songs are thicker and done better.
Happy to see such a take on this. I'm not sure which version I prefer, but I find it so weird how any attempt to praise this live vocal performance gets drowned out in a sea of "no, Claire" comments. No one is taking away from Claire her central role in what this song has become, no one is insinuating any lack in her vocal skills, yet so many feel compelled to choke every praise for this (live!) performance, quite disrespectfully belittling it. For what I'm concerned, I couldn't have imagined a better live outcome for such a vocally challenging studio song.
When Richard Wright, the keyboardist, died in 2008, it was this song that was sung at his funeral by Durga Mc Broom, one of the Backgroundsinger of the Pink Floyd World Tour. This was his express wish during his lifetime. The rumor persists that none other than Jon Lord accompanied on the piano.
The original can never be replicated, nor should it be. Claire made it her own. However, when you take into consideration that these ladies were on a very long tour and had to do this night after night without destroying their vocal chords I think it puts into perspective just how amazing this performance really is. Sam Brown (blonde lady) is actually a folk singer which shows how versatile she is. For me both the original and the pulse version are equally brilliant for different reasons. ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Saw this live at Earls Court london , Once you have heard this live even the original pales in comparison. I still have the original album version but this just hits me so much harder, the passion in this is exquisite .

BUT, the continuity of tone, pitch and emotion from one singer taking on the whole song is tough to top. Clare Torry singing the piece in one take - well, not exactly if you read the history - cannot be beaten.
This song represents life and death. If you notice the 1st part is more intense as if fighting off dying. The second part is going through the realization of death and giving in, which is why it gets calmer towards the end.
I wish I could "LIKE" this song 1,000 times. Thanks
The first half of the concert was them playing their entire THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album in it's entirety. Then there was a 15-20 minute intermission after which they resumed with tracks from PULSE, DIVISION BELL and earlier album hits. I'll never see AND hear any live show that awesome again. Almost 30 years since and I have yet to.
Ok, come on! How gifted are these three back up singers? And how cool is it that the band gave them an opportunity to shone?

Take It Back from the PULSE CONCERT is another great live performance by Pink Floyd.
"Pedal Steel Guitar" played with a medal or glass tube is used often in country music. NOBODY plays it like David Gilmour.

I slightly prefer the original where only Clare Torry sings but in any case it's a beautiful thing. I think it's one of the most brilliant songs of the modern musical era!

This song is about Death and Dying,... The original studio version is on their "Dark Side of the Moon" album from 1973.
Clare Torry was a very accomplished British singer at the time in London, and Pink Floyd hired her to do this one song with wordless vocals, Tory did 3 takes and Pink Floyd took parts of all three to make the final product.
They told her no words, and to think about Death and Horror before, and while singing.
I love Clare's version because she was blazing the trail. No one had ever done that before, and she absolutely killed it.
Everyone since then had Clare's version to inspire them, and these ladies on this recording nobly filled in for Clare. Sam Brown's windup for her existential, angst-ridden rail is one of my favorite things. I love seeing people hear that for the first time.
I’m somewhat biased about this album. I heard it live in 1974. The album went on sale the Monday after the Friday night concert I attended. I couldn’t tell the difference between the live show and the recorded version on the album.
I suggest you cover the entire album on your channel. The album is (IMO) one of the top 5 albums ever recorded. Just a suggestion

David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

Richard Wright only wrote the music for a different project prior to the songs concept ever being thought of which was the results of Gilmour being asked if P.F. would ever do a song about religion and god, or as he called it.... "The Great Gig In The Sky"@@campbeld63

When you need 2-3 persons to try to replace one single person and you don't succeed to deliver the meaning of this ''song'' , sorry but Clare Torry is the best performer.
I doubt it's that they "needed" 3 performers to do this song live, but just wanting to give each singer a chance to showcase their talents. Any one of the three could have tackled this on their own with ease. I never understood anyone thinking that the three singing was out of necessity...
