The original by Clare Torry can never be bettered .........a lot of us have seen the Clare Torry TH-cam video interview where she talks about this song..... but I remember an interview she gave long before TH-cam ,Google etc.(Probably in The NME) where she specifically says that Dave Gilmour took her to one side and asked her if she could improvise her singing to envisage how she would imagine what dying would feel like....And when she'd finished, she said how embarrassed she felt, that she'd let herself go so much.... When I first heard The Great Gig in The Sky, I had no idea what the song was about but I was left stunned into silence........... I thought the singer was a beautiful black soul singer who had gone unrecognised by me. The song still moves me deeply in a wonderful way to this day.(P.S.The other 4 females on the rest of TDSOTM were all session singers and the one who had the most prominent voice on the tracks "Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse was a lady called Doris Troy who was born in The Bronx.

On the original track, suggested by sound engineer Alan Parsons , the Pink Floyd hired Clare Torry , a 25 -year -old singer who improvised a vocal for the music composed by Wright. They then ask this singer, who has just been introduced to them, to think of horror, of death, and to sing. After a few takes, she leaves and apologizes, convinced that she sang badly. But everyone in the studio is thrilled with her performance

The original singer sued Pink Floyd for partial writing credits for this song, since they told her to just make it up. She won the law suit.
Edit: she won a settlement of the suit. Creating lyrics and melodies is in fact music writing, regardless as to how a reply tries to ignore reality. 😎

    • @Mr.Ekshin
      @Mr.Ekshin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The suit never made it to court. Pink Floyd settled with her out of court for an undisclosed sum. If she'd actually been able to win that suit in court it would have set an AWFUL precedent. No band would EVER hire a studio musician or backup singer ever again if these folks could simply come back later and sue them for royalties.
Studio musicians of all types improvise some or all of what they play and/or sing... it should NEVER mean that they somehow 'own' part of that track, or are entitled to more than the agreed fee for their studio work. That would be like a house painter painting your house for 2 thousand dollars... and then showing up years later after the sale of your home, and claiming that he was owed an additional twenty thousand... because he added that value to the house.
It's not like Claire Tory was somehow cheated on this either. She was credited for her vocals on the track, and was paid her standard studio fees (which came to about a month's rent in London at the time) for a single hour of work. She basically became famous for this track. She didn't tour with them (her choice), but occasionally joined Floyd on stage to perform it (for which she was paid quite handsomely). More than 30 years later when she was retired from singing, she suddenly came back and sued. A lowdown backstabbing move on her part.

I was never same after seeing this live @ The Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA. It ..was..insane.. A spiritual experience! life changing 🙌 Claire Torry sang the original . The band had her go into the sound ptoof studio booth as the band said "Let It RIP!" after she was given 2 or 3 questions... emotionally charged Deep, Deep soul's journey searching quest singing. The truth is she went in & sang and came out saying "I am sorry, I am so very sorry I'm embarrassed...I was all over the place...irrational". Apparently she felt mortified and not knowing her own power....what she expressed without a WORD makes this song 10 billion times a powerful connection between heaven and earth. The band said No to her plea to a possible "do-over" that the band couldn't believe that she could not recognize her qualities of such beauty that only she created for not just PF but for eternity. It's proof to never give up, and you CAN do it differently with authority and authenticity confidence & trust there is only love.
Humans are their own worst critics... to sing is to embrace the divine love from which all things we came.. i feel it as an expressing of Angelc realm of divine feminine energy 💃🙏❤ it is what's coming from the Heart not the head. Thank you so much I am a huge fan of music and your channel.

Personally I like the difference between the 3 voices. Plus, they have to do this night after night. Being a drummer for 40 years who also did backing vocals, it's easy to let rip and go flat out the first night & have people pat you on the back only to find out that you overstretched your voice & struggle to repeat the same performance the following nights? Nobody can repeat clair torys performance, nor should they. It's a one-off performance that was captured on tape at that moment & blew everyones brains out.

Live Floyd does not disappoint. They are musicians of the highest order. They spare no expense to reproduce the full sonic experience of the albums, and then some. Full surround sound in the arenas and stadiums that they played brings out every note in the vocals, instruments and even all the background sound FX and whispers. Saw them in 88 in a 20,000 seat indoor arena. And again for Pulse in 94 at somewhere around 80 thousand seat old Soldier Field in Chicago. No difference in sound quality! It is truly a full sight and sound sensory experience.

I think in the first part she's singing more about fear and refusing to die, the second part is about calming down and gradually coming to terms with it, and the last part is about catharsis and finally accepting your fate. Claudia Fontaine is last singer, 3 singers, think their all fantastic just matter of taste?
I’d love to be able to sing like any of them for just one day!♥️🌹♥️🌹♥️

you should listen to the whole album, back to back. it starts with her voice and this is the last song so it calls it back at the end to cap off the experience

I may me wrong but I think the black woman is the original voice, boy those black female singers are so out of this world

The original singer is probably 65 years old now.

So far, no cover has ever matched the interpretation created by Clare Torry.

The singers in this video may "have it", but none of them are the original vocalist from the album. Clare Torry has appeared on stage to perform this number with them a few times over the years, but the "Pulse" tour was not one of those times. :-)
If you want to see Clare herself doing this live, and still nailing it, check out this version instead: th-cam.com/video/NAcDOpd0Lv0/w-d-xo.html

This is great, but in my opinion, check out the Delicate Sound Of Thunder version. Way better.

If that was Clare Torry older....I'm not sure. But the LP Version was about fighting suicide, from what I read, not sure if it's true
