Can't wait for the next video! I like your vibe. I too am an old school DM playing since '79 and fabricate a lot of my own props/books/screens and it seems like we're cut from the same cloth. IDK how your Twitter account stumbled into my feed, but I'm glad it happened.

Me too, dawg! Truth is I have been thinking about throwing myself back into gaming for a long time, now, but I keep getting bogged down with RL concerns. But that road leads to another heart attack, so now I'm going to throw my life into things that give me joy.

I really like the idea of making my own screen. I've got a page laminator (for protecting my other game reference charts), so I think I'll try this after laminating the panels. Yours came out looking great, by the way! I solo a lot of OSR, so I think I'll start with a Basic Fantasy DM screen.

NICE! That's going to look great! You may need to tweak the process for connecting the pages. Book binding tape is designed to be used on paper, and the texture difference between the laminated pages and the printed tapes may make the seams stand out a bid.

Thank you so much for this, i'll be making a screen this weekend to play some basic fantasy and i'll be using some of your ideas for that. Hope it looks as nice as yours!

You're very welcome. I was very surprised that nearly every "make your own screen" video on TH-cam required special materials and access to woodworking tools. Personally, I don't care for wooden screens. They take up too much table space and add unnecessary weight when taking your game on the road.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 aaah the wood dm screens, they look nice but the cons outweight the pros, since i can't play in my place, a cardboard screen fits so much better in my dm kit, then again, your idea is really cool! I'll be customizing it to fit my game, but the idea is so nice that the moddifications will be minimal. Happy gaming!

I'm glad! And thank you for sitting through my many tangents.

This is an ancient video but I just got to "idk who owns the trademark" to "dungeon master". WoTC owns that phrase of course, but no one owns the trademark to "DM" (the acronym)! WoTC attempted to get it but it was rejected. I say "Danger Manager" in the system I'm working on. Dragon Maestro! Dungeon Minister! I think we should reclaim the DM acronym IMHO. "DM" has better SEO and frankly, WoTC doesn't deserve to monopolize it anymore.

I agree 100% with your assessment of Old vs. New games. I still play 1st ed. AD&D, the B/X edition and sometimes, when the mood strikes us, 1st ed. Gamma World and the 3 Black Book version of Traveller. These newer games just don't have the grit and gravy that I'm used to.

Love DM screens.. Although I have my original AD&D screen, I never understood the layout for the DM as their could have been better information presented, and other information removed. I like your AD&D layout very much, particularly the section that lists various rules and the page numbers in the DMG. This makes looking up things on the fly easier. But I'm wondering why did you dedicate a whole page to hireling morale? Is this something that comes up in your games often? ( since I run B/X regularly, I tend to like their simplified system more, but can understand the need for complexity in AD&D). Just curious . Thanks

That page also covers enemy morale, so it comes up pretty much every time the players engage in combat. In OD&D and AD&D combats rarely resulted in massacres. At some point the enemy usually breaks and runs. Hireling moral is called a "loyalty" roll. It comes up less often, but yes. When you order your hireling to do something dangerous, or if the tide of battle turns against you, your hirelings might refuse or run away.

I like this method. But if the team editing for basic fantasy found a supplier that could print up screens like the ones we had up till 3rd edition and had it p.o.d. like the books i would be a happy old man.

I use the panels hosted on the site as inserts but would buy a bf screen with those directly printed in a heartbeat.

Oh, hells yeah. But I would still be using my home-made 1E screen. By using the combat wheel instead of an on-screen matrix you can free up a LOT of real estate. I've added all kinds of much more useful tables. I used Basic Fantasy as a sample for the video because it's my favorite RPG that I don't already have a screen for. Frankly, for most games I use a generic screen with pocket sleeves. But sometimes you just want something special. And I really do like the old school feel of a thick cardstock screen.

@@grumpyoldgrognard9561 I nabbed a 5e screen for next to nothing. Did adhesive vinyl prints of the horizontal b.f. screens and stuck them over the kind of useless info 5e has done with most of the screens they made.
