    Can you show how to frame for patio doors?

      The next time we frame one, we’ll post it. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Good luck with your installation Susan. 👍🏽

    Hey Daru, I am enclosing a breezeway from the garage to the house and making a mudroom area. The breezeway is concrete. Should I use a sill under the slider, or should I secure to the concrete?

    nice details..also like the fact that left and right sides were 3 studs...that gives it solidity when opening the slider.

      You noticed! It’s always good to do where possible. Thanks John!

    Did they cut the sill plate and put the flashing right on the subfloor?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryan installed the waterproofing membrane directly on the subfloor.

    What a cost for replace a door like this?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We’re installing a fibreglass door which costs about $2700. It’s more energy efficient and stronger than vinyl but more expensive. Vinyl would be substantially cheaper but I don’t like using vinyl for larger openings where a strong frame is required. For labor, it would vary depending on what carpenters charge in your neighborhood. Thanks for the question Martin!

    On your video of installing an LVL beam I see where the beam is a lot shorter than the 12inch beams I see on other videos. Is the LVL beam you used replacing the 12 inch beams? And if you don't mind what company manufactures the beam you used?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the LVL is much thinner than the existing 12" beam. I've used Versa Lams and Microllam LVLs which can be cut down for a thinner header. Just remember to check the table spans online & consult a structural engineer. LVLs can carry greater loads than standard dimensional lumber. I imagine other videos are showing bigger spans that are carrying heavier loads. In this application I like the look of the thinner header, it provides more light with a taller door for a more modern look. It was approved by my engineer. LVLs also have cutting minimums that you have to keep in mind. Hope that helps!

    Hi Daru. Just came across your video and I have a question. I want to install a 5' x 6' patio (French) door leading out onto a deck. I think the house (mobile home) is 2'x4' framing where as the patio door is 2'x6' framing. Is this at all possible?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sneaquie, usually when installing a door in 2’ x 4’ framing you would order the door to fit the existing opening. It would be possible to install a door made for larger framing but it wouldn’t be ideal because you would have to build out your trim or wall to accommodate the larger depth.

    Is the patio door supposed to be where you have to step up to get out or into it.

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Janet, in this install our subfloor and threshold are flush and the patio door will sit directly on the waterproofing membrane. This gives a nice finished look when the hardwood flooring is installed. I don't like to install patio doors high as they can become a trip hazard and a step up in not ideal. Thanks for the question! If you have a photo or a more detailed question you can find me on twitter @DaruDhillon

    Why was the fixed "door" kept in the jamb? Would it be easier to lift/place without it?

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, We kept the fixed door in the jamb because it's easy to lift and install it that way. It also helps to keep the frame more stable during the installation process.

    • @mitchdenner9743
      @mitchdenner9743 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it helps keep the frame rigid, without it your square frame may become a parallelogram.

    The size of those gaps!!!

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This house is over 100 years old and the floor above the patio door had settled making the gap at the header on the right noticeably bigger. We fixed the floor above so it's level but the structure remains settled. A new LVL header was also installed. Newer homes shouldn't see issues like this but it's not uncommon with century homes and Victorians. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

    Can you share the manufacture and model of door? I like the black outside and white inside.. thx

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Tagdout! I used a local fibreglass door company here in Toronto called In-Line Fiberglass. I went with fibreglass because the door is big. For smaller sizes you could also go vinyl. Black on the outside is a great look 👍🏽

    How much wider did you frame the opening than the width of the door? Looks like 2” total? 1” play on each side to shim

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Matt, I believe the rough opening was 2" - 2 1/2" bigger than the door for shimming.

      We renovated the whole house. This video is just one part of our day. Everyone has a different preference for their gear but Ryan is up on roofs a lot so it would be practical for him to do so.

    a 4 person job ffs. LOL

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Installing a patio door is a straightforward two person job. This project includes a full-gut of a 2-story home. My guys aren't the type to sit around and watch. When cameras are rolling we all work together. It's efficient then we move on to the next job. They also can't be working on other areas of the house while filming because they can't run a saw and everything we do requires power tools. It does make for a speedy install though :)

    Yes, the door is beautiful but it doesn't compare with you at all. Love those sparkling blue eyes! ...And you can build stuff too! Nice combination. I gotta be honest with you here: This is one project that if I was gonna do it by myself it would take me all day just to get it set in place and leveled off. Then I'd finish it the next day, and I would use regular bat insulation around it instead of foam. Just not a big fan of this new foam stuff. It doesn't let your home breathe like regular insulation does. Still, a VERY nice job by a great team and a beautiful lady.

    boy the guy with the harness is carrying a lot of stuff for a door installation! luckily a the end he realized he just needed his hands! Daru, you need to wear gloves and a hat, please! that foam is messy as hell.

    I don't know where there is a lvl there and everything is so crooked.

    • @DaruDhillon
      @DaruDhillon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LVL is new and the existing structure is over 100 years old. The original structure has settled which is very common in older homes.
