Watch This Before Buying an NB Mazda Miata 1998-2005

  • The NB Miata is actually arguably more reliable then the NA Mazda Miata due to the NA Miata Crankshaft issue. The NB Miata can and will last upwards to 300k miles, but with that said, there may be issues that can pop up during the journey to 300k.
In hopes to better educate you about your ride or your purchase, I made this video.
There is no guarantee that all these issues will happen, but they are all just note worthy!

Happy New Year everyone! Hope everyone stays safe and smart!
I make these videos strictly for people who are in the market to buy an NB Miata or people who currently owns one and want to better educate themselves about their ride. Either way, not everyone will experience these issues and I'm not saying you 100% will. But, they are all possibilities.

NC Miata value will drop, then we would be in the same limbo. Its just the way the market works. Then in 10 years the same will happen with the ND Miata.

I paid $300 for an NB shell. And $4500 for a crashed built NB with a bent frame. Made one goodbone out of two bad. The owner of the built car gave me book with the build coast. Engine alone has close to $7k in its with labor and machine shop work plus parts. By the time I was done. With Dyno time and all that stuff to get it running right. I spent about $7k. And that's with me doing 95% of the work. So in my opinion. A well built NB 300 - 400 whp range will go for $10k or so. Maybe more.

Great video and very informative. Thanks very much for posting.
One thing to add, another place to check for rust on a MK2 MX5 is the chassis rails. The chassis rails are a serious rust area on the MK2 due to having a double skin in order to meet new crash safety regulations. The double skin collects moisture and the chassis rails rust from the inside out. The chassis rail rust is not a problem on the MK1 due to having a single skin.

The 1.8 didn't have these issues, the 1.8 is simply a better engine. I'm not saying that 1.6 engiens are bad, just that the 1.8 engines are better. Also btw the BP 1.8 existed before the first Miatas and Ford had owned 24,5% of Mazda since 1974 so I don't see how that only applies to the 1.8? Yes they did increase their ownership but that was in 1995 when the 1.8 Miata had already started being made
