The Story of Rick Fox: The Defender

  • In more ways than one, across two careers, Rick Fox has always been a defender.
As an NBA player, he became known for his unrelenting physicality and sound defensive play. With the Lakers, he acted as a stable veteran presence who helped mediate competing personalities. He found the role his team needed him to adopt, and he took a back seat to two of the biggest stars the league has ever seen.
But he carved out his own niche in esports, as well. He discovered it through a desire to improve the relationship with the son that his NBA career had impacted. And when he eventually came out in support of esports, he again found himself forced onto the defensive, embracing that role with enthusiasm.
From a Bahamian high school to multiple NBA Finals and now playing an integral role in esports’ future, this is Rick Fox’s story.

Can't be understated just how vital his support to the esports community was. He made a risk to invest in a scene that wasn't too relevant to the whole world at the time (but it was growing, for sure) and it paid off. He supported the community wherever he had appeared in. And he's always doing his best in doing all those things. What an awesome man this guy.

I really respect how passionate he is about esports, coz I know some brands are only in it for the money. Nothing wrong with money but this kind of mindset (also prioritizing the overall well being of the players, helping them be proud of what they do etc. ) is what brings true success, and guess what....money follows that. All to best to him and his oraganization.

Kplephn single-handedly defeated the purpose of this entire video. There are Lakers fans, traditional sports fans, that got this video from there recommended list who are asking the same thing about every game that appears in the video. "Why mention a party game?" is what they ask about esports in its entirety. "Why would you watch a video game?"
As someone who saw that news segment live, it hurts me that someone from *inside* the esports community would say something like that about another video game - TH-cam comment or not. It really shows that we still have a long way to go.

That was a fantastic video...seeing Rick Fox embrace the gaming/esports industry and riding that high wave was probably the best decision he ever could've made for everyone involved.
I don't watch League anymore (I know he has a formed a team there, but haven't follow it), but I am "in the loop" with Echo Fox as an organization when it comes to the Fighting Game Community. His team has signed a lot of amazing players that has given them so many more opportunities for exposure than ever and it's considered that the best players in the FGC are all from Echo Fox for multiple FG's. So THANK you Rick Fox for choosing this path!

I am from EU and have followed the LCS/LCK for almost 10 years now and I have never seen someone fight so hard for eSports in the West. He is one of the people that made the masses aware that the pro players stake everything on eSports just like physical sports pros. And I believe we owe him a lot in terms of making eSports commercially successful and in it becoming mainstream. Thanks to him eSports in the west is slowly becoming as recognized and well known as in asia.
Usually when you see rich and famous people move into esports they are in for the money but he, essentially just wanted to connect with his son and got hooked on the feeling of eSports.
He is supporting Echo Fox with a passion and is something akin to the mental core of their team.
So now seeing investors and supporters and even Riot throwing him under the bus feels heartless, bitter and undeserved. He made me love not the team, but the whole organization so I pasionally hope he will come out of this on top.

Wish my father was as supportive as Fox was to his son. It’s hard becoming a supportive person yourself when you didn’t really have much of it growing up. In a way Fox represents the father figure a lot of us need. Believe in your kids, your siblings, support them and what they love to do. My little brother loves fortnite, and even though I don’t like it I still play it with him every single week almost every single day. It makes me so happy seeing him happy playing this game. Video games are much more than games, like physical sports, they’re a way to bring people together and create relationships. To anyone who doesn’t believe video games are real sports, ask yourself this, what is a sport? I can guarantee you video games tick all the same boxes off and even more.

Had a conversatiion with a friend about esports (he was a nba fan) in 2016, he said it wasn't a real sport. I demolished his argument and he still found a way to complain.
Fast forward to 2017-18, we had a conversation again and his tune changed to one of interests and respect. Watch out people, esports is a thing, and is exponentially growing, money and popularity wise.
