One thing I discovered out of desperation -- because I messed up a couple of the caps over the openings for the screws -- is that a teeny tiny crochet hook works perfectly to pinch out those caps if you need to take them out. I used a size 5 crochet hook.

One note: on my roof rail and crossbar kit made by Tuntrol, the ‘feet’ have two holes each in them -and the crossbars have two hole tapped at each end… and wouldn’t you know… there were 8 additional screws sent with the kit. Now nowhere in the instructions are these holes and screws discussed. But after installation of the racks, my daughter has reported that the crossbars rattle and make a lot of noise. So putting 2 and 2 together… so today I’m going to remove the cross bar assemblies, install the screws to secure the feet to the bars and then put the whole kit back together… IDK if the kit you installed had this feature, but it’s worth noting that the system should be tied together prior to attachment to the roof
This video is awesome and was very helpful. However wanted to give a warning: I did not have the right tools. Had to purchase them for about $75, then aligning the rails to the correct holes was very difficult and frustrating. I kept having to unscrew and screw back in. Overall the experience took me weeks of waiting for the OEM components, days of ordering the correct different toolsets from Amazon, and hours of trying to get the rails installed and then the crossbars. I had to do this outside during the summer with mosquitoes and humid weather. If I could do it over again, I would have just had the dealership install them for me. 😂

One final thing I'm struggling with: the rails got installed without issue, but there's little grey 'caps' on the inside of these rails for the screw holes: ie, where the cross bar rails should go. The instructions that came with the kit do not touch on this. Guess just remove them by force? Because as is there's no way the black screws for the cross bars will go into these tiny grey holes. Idk what the proper term is, sorry.
Nvm, had to peel the grey caps off, all good! Successful install but the cross bars (even though in place), seem a bit loose: why didn't the instructions mention using the tinier screws to mount the crossbar into the stanchion itself?
Please note that the 2 roof racks are NOT the same size. One is a couple inches longer than the other one. The longer one goes up front; the shorter one goes in the back.

Hey everythingdiy... I actually have the machine grey version. I had the roof rails wrapped in gloss black. They look beautiful and would stand out on your white CX-5. Also I didn't care much for Mazdas roof rack so I might get the Thule aeroblades for a better aesthetic look. Great diy video and if you hate the wheels that much... You can always get them powder coated. 👍🏼
I am glad you mentioned that the rear roof rack can be somewhat tight. No matter what I did, I could not fit the rear rack with the rubber insert which seals it. I am wondering if I can pop one of the silver squares on the rail and slightly move it outward? Has anyone tried to pop one of these out easily? My rails were installed by the dealer and I am trying to install the cross bars myself.
So I ordered a very similar model of slides and roof-rack all-aluminum "Heka" from Amazon for $328. Quality of the product for the price is great and I highly recommend it, although it did not come with instructions and a few foam pads was missing (!) This UT video was very helpful and save me a lot of time to figure out. Thanks!
My drivers side is leaking water somehow and its sitting right by the rear corner of the rear window and rusting it out, I think the water is getting in at the last bolt hole and running down?

Excellent. Too bad the Kit did not come with instructions for roof rack, ( only for the cross rails), They should have steered you to the video for instructions. Had to hunt for it at TH-cam the 7 minute video was excellently.

For future reference, when removing the rain gutters do not attempt to pull up on them. Instead, pry it from the side. It will pop off easy.
And the plastic trim tools and a rag help protect the paint. Thanks for the tip!

Sorry we already installed it. It's honestly the same process, maybe a slight difference here and there but it would pretty much be a duplicate video.

If you install a wind fairing that should eliminate most noise.
