i like the flameless ration heaters. We've gotten them before in these kits but ours were American kits. If you go to food pantry that gives you daily meals you might luck up on one or 2. Or get them in a regular bag of other blessed goodies from your church or pantry that gives monthly

Outside of America, raisins are the big dark ones from purple grapes, and sultanas are the medium light brown ones from green grapes, and currants are the small dark ones.

You know Emmy those oatmeal cookies can be used to make alternative meals, for example they can be eaten with either cheese spread or a spoonful of jam or honey, if you crush them they can be cooked into a type of porridge or by adding some melted butter it can used to make a base for a cheesecake or tipped into a pot of stew they will thicken it to make a meat dish that can be carried in the hand for eating on the move in an urgent relocation. The Army Catering Corps have a competition with every course that they run , where the students are split into small groups and challenged to produce the best meal they can using only the contents of the ration packs and the equipment that they would normally have in the field. The judges are usually the course instructors and senior officers, but sometimes they also invite chefs from local restaurants or celebrity chefs when possible.

Interesting fact about Stevia. I once wondered if you could use a leaf to sweeten tea, so bought a plant, placed a couple of crushed leaves in my cup as it steeped. It was definitely sweet tasting, and not as funky tasting as the processed powder. About 30, or so, minutes after that cup of tea, my sinuses began to swell, with no obvious cause. Decided to Google Stevia plant allergies and discovered it's a member of the ragweed family. Yep, one of my identified allergens! Didn't make that mistake again!

The brightly colored drink mixes in the US mre is so that if you have to use less than desirable water (in color) it doesn’t gross you out. It kind of hides the yuck. Obviously you’d boil said water, but the dyes cover up the real color of the water. My nephew was a Sgt in the army, that’s what he told me anyway.

I'm an old vet... I've eaten American military field rations from 3 or 4 different wars. The oldest were the K-Rats, probably from the Korean conflict. They didn't leave much of an impression on me one way or the other. The C-Rats I ate were very good in my opinion. (probably Viet Nam war era) Of course there were rations that were universally hated... The ham & eggs were dubbed "Green Eggs & Ham". They were awful. But the beef stew was great, as was the pasta with beef sauce. It had shredded roast beef in the sauce. With both K-Rats & C-Rats, they came in a cardboard box & contained cans for the main entrees. They also had little can openers that you could put on your key ring. The small ones were designated P-38 & the large ones were called a P-51. If you got lucky, you got a blued steel P-38. It would never rust. The larger P-51 was made of tin plated steel & they rusted badly. The rations had the usual accessory items, the powdered beverage mixes, cookies, crackers, jam or cheese spread, salt & pepper, gum, TP, spork or spoon, etc. But what set K-Rats & C-Rats apart from MREs was the fact that they also contained cigarettes with matches. Yes... The small pack of cigs had 5 cigs in it. It could be any brand of cigs too. I've gotten Lucky Strike, L&M, Kool, Camel, Marlboro, Winston etc. (in C-Rats) I've also eaten a wide variety of MREs. The best part, in my opinion, was the tiny glass bottle of Tobasco sauce. You can kill the funky taste of anything if you put enough Tobasco sauce on it... Life in the military was often an adventure.

They're not great. Now they have a bunch of options. When I served in the Marine Corps in '96, we had limited options. The best one I had (dont think they make it anymore), was the ham slice. Alot of Marines hated it, but I thought it was good. The dessert and chocolate doesnt taste what we get in the civilian world. Theres a off taste, gritty. The freeze dried fruit was always good. The crackers have the same gritty taste. Peanut butter tasted off too. The cheese spread was pretty good

Found that out the hard way in the early 90's when at a Pizza Hut and put Nutrasweet in my soda like kids always do... Ended up puking everywhere and having seizures at a friend's house inn the bathtub.

I'm with you Emmy, I HATE artificial sweeteners. If I'm having something that's not supposed to be healthy anyway I rather have it have sugar. Which is why I hope it always remains an option to either choose sugar or sugar-free in drinks, unfortunately here in Europe they've been sneakily trying to push making stevia or other sweeteners a default and I'm not a fan.
Also you're the person who made me go into a MRE rabbithole all these years ago! Ended up binging Steve1989 and co. to destress before my high school exams and since then I'm doing a masters in college now!

I'm always one for "make things unsweetened and make people sweeten by their own decisions." I'm a stevia user and lean away from sugar. Even more so now that I learned my father's side of the family has a history of CAD and diabetes type 2, and he's at the border with pre-diabetes and high blood pressure. I'm delaying my turn to as late as possible, which stevia can help by reducing the sugar consumption, and changing to unsaturated fats

I also get a bitter aftertaste with artificial sweeteners. Here’s an authentic Bolognese recipe Emmy!
    4 large carrots
    4 large celery stalks
    1 large onion
    1 package of chopped pancetta
    1 tube of tomato paste
    1 - 28oz can of San Marzano Tomato’s
    2 cups of red wine
    1 bottle of Pasatta(strained tomato’s)
    1lb of ground beef 85%/15%
    1lb of veal
    1lb of ground pork
    1 liter of chicken broth
    Olive oil
    Salt and pepper to taste
Sofrito: The sofrito is the base of the sauce, in a blender chop the carrot, celery, onion and pancetta until you get a very finely chopped consistency. Add this to a deep pot with olive oil and sauté this for at least 8-10 minutes and season as you go to draw out the water.
At this stage you can prepare the meat, brown the beef to get rid of excess grease, but not necessary for the pork and veal. Once your sofrito is sautéed, add your meat into the pot and break it up and continue to sauté, continue cooking until the meat begins to cook throughly.
Next add the tomato paste and cook it out for a few minutes to get rid of the sharp bitterness of the paste. Then add your red wine and allow the alcohol to evaporate. Then add your passata, stir, then add your one liter of chicken broth and San Marzano tomato’s.
Lower the heat to a simmer and allow to cook uncovered for 6-7 hours until it has reduced and the meat is visible and liquid no longer covers the top. Then, set aside off heat for one hour to rest, then you can reheat or store and let it cool overnight.
The result is a deep, savory Sunday Bolonese for the whole family. Serve with Papardelli pasta or any long ribboned pasta.

Also chicken stock doesn't make much sense, vegetable broth is the most commonly used to make ragù (especially ragù alla bolognese)

My grandpa was in world war 2, grandpas little brother died in world war 2 , my grandma nade it through basic in the same war but got discharged honorable because they found out she was deaf in one ear, and my mother wasn't active but did 2 maybe 3 years til they found out she was pregnant with my brother from 63 to 65 or 66. Her husband was stationed overseas when she was honorably discharged. I didn't come around til 79 my father different from the rest of my family was navy they're all army

I find the flame less heaters a waste of water. We during Desert Storm would heat in water in canteen cup. We would use the hot water for coffee and or cocoa. We would mix coffee and cocoa a lot of the time.

    • @LordDragox412
      @LordDragox412 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They're good when you can't or don't want to make a fire to boil water, either because you're in a middle of a storm or at night and afraid of revealing your position. And if you don't want to waste water, and if you're in a very tough spot and really need to get a fire going, you could try getting the magnesium powder to combust. So they're certainly useful and having few on hand don't hurt as long as you store them properly :P

The instant tea is a nice throwback to the old-style boxed 24-hour rations, as they would come with instant white tea, then they switched to teabags, which I guess is less efficient when you want a quick cuppa...

probably golden syrup rather than treacle, treacle tends to be quite bitter and most of our flapjack style bars are made with golden syrup :) you should look up a recipe for Yorkshire parkin. its a ginger cake we eat for bonfire night in Yorkshire and its uses both treacle and golden syrup and oats. Its amazing ❤❤❤

Thew difrence beteen sultanas, raisins, and currants, are the type of grape and the processing method used. Sultanas are made from green grapes normally coated in an oil-based solution prior to drying to speed up the process. Raisins are normally a larger type of red grape that has been dried for around three weeks So tend to be sweeter and jucier than Currents. Currants are made by drying a variety of smaller kinds of red grapes for up to three weeks much like Raisins but due to the difrence in the size of the grapes take on a sligtly more tart flavor to its sweetness than that of the Rasins.

I rarely see anyone quite that excited about an FRH! I don't like the idea of "3-in-1" drinks because the milk powder is more likely to spoil than the instant drink. I've used some very old "Coffee, Instant, Type I" and never had a problem with it.

Love your MRE videos. As for the pasta sauce. When I make my own sauce I tend to add a bit of sweetener as well. The acid from the tomatoes doesn’t sit well with my stomach. I have IBD so…if I want to eat something that is acidic it does need a bit of sweet to tone that down. But store bought sauces seem to be overly sweet, and yes the canned pastas are way too sweet. I still crave the chef Boyardee spaghetti and meatballs in a can once in a while….I think it’s the nostalgia rather than the taste. It wasn’t something my mother bought, so the first time I had it was at a sleepover when I was in first grade. And every time I’d go back to that friend’s house I would ask if we could have it. 😂 So it brings back memories of those sleepovers. Btw, that friend and I are still close and we’ll be turning 50 years old very soon!!!
Anyway, thanks Emmy! As always a wonderful video. ✌🏻🥰😊

I seem to remember that the flameless heater packs in the UK are the same stuff as in salt and vinegar favoured crisps. 🙂 (Honestly it's not as bad as it sounds, as the vinegar cuts through the greasiness). The drink wouldn't be a bright coloured, because we band alot of artificially colours to reduce allergic reactions.

It's magnesium alloy (Very rarely aluminum oxide based) and salt but there is an old trick for more shitty packs or those that were old and all you do it add a little salt in with the water and they will come to life.... But she also had the flameless heater on top of the food instead of under it so it would be sitting in the water so it slowed the reaction down

I would suggest, when it looked like the FRH wouldn't work, this is a problem that has been noticed in very cold climates. I'm assuming you were using a filtered water direct from the fridge. If you used room temperature water, the chemical reaction would have started far sooner. If the water is cold, it just takes extra time, to get going. Excellent video, keep them coming - very interesting.
