As always good advice. 👍 My Qualcast Suffolk Punch mower had the same hunting/rough idle problem and has the brass bowl bolt jet, but I identified a slightly different fix that may also be worth checking before reaching for the finger drill. Mine has the through hole near the head of the brass bowl bolt as shown in the video, however when I examined the nut with my magnifying glass I found another absolutely tiny hole right near the very end of the threads. It was blocked. I gave it a poke with my smallest gas jet cleaner file (which only just went in) and it cleared the blockage and completely cured the hunting problem. This extra hole was so small I could barely see it without magnification.

@@benc2722 Tecumseh engine and Tecumseh Carb. I had to clean the holes out in the brass bowl bolt and the main jet this week as over the winter the fuel had slightly jellified and it has been cutting out on me. I paid special attention to the super small hole at the end of the brass bolt threads as well as the main through hole near the brass bolt head. I also gave the main jet a clean with the gas jet cleaner. All is now well again. 👍

A lot of surging issues are caused by a lean fuel mix, keep in mind your fix, in effect, richened the mixture, there could be an air leak in the fuel/air mix downstream of the carb causing the lean mixture problem! Check the two tiny bolts on the intake tube are tight and there's no air getting past the associated gasket between that and the cylinder head and the "O" ring at the carb end, a quick spray whith carb cleaner while the engine is running will highlight any air leaks ie, the surge will stop or the revs will rise.

I took a small engine repair class many years ago and the instructor told us to always run the carb dry after each use and to use premium fuel to avoid carbon deposits. Now, I have over 30 years on my B&S Quantum mower without any problems. Just change the oil and replace the spark plug (oh, I just replaced the fuel line out of preventive maintenance). Exactly the same technique as endodontics ( root canal treatment ). Dentists now throw out their nickel titanium super flexible hand files after every use.... they are tapered tho, but cut off the taper and you have a set for free ( if you know a friendly dentist!! )
You can also get really thin welding rod cleaners that are not tapered that are also used for adjusting and filing guitar nut slots

Nice video. I allay wondered how to fix that surging issue. I just checked my carb nut and the hole ended being 0.6 mm. I think the micro bit you used was 0.8 mm. Have you seen them use different sized holes in the nuts for different machines? My mower had a Briggs & Stratton engine.

Hi Mick. Thank you for this one. I had a late 2016 quantum powered Viking in for poor running. Obviously carb. Stripped and cleaned manually. Not much better. Stripped again. Gave it an hour in the ultrasonic cleaner and manually cleaned it again with carb cleaner compressed air, jet files etc.
Still not much better, until it warmed up.
Tried your fix. Just using jet files to remove some material. Now perfect.
Never known a quantum do that. Just wondering if late models have finer main jet for emission requirements? Only thing I can think of?
    Cheers
    David.

Hi Mike, can you please help. B&S 450E plastic carb engine on a 18 month old Hayter 41 Auto drive. Slow starting whatever I do 3 pumps 4 pumps on the red ( hole in the middle plunger).
It does start on pull 4 no black smoke and then runs fine starting every time when warm. Dealer has never come across this issue thinks its a dirty carb I don't see this as it runs great when warm. So first please explain (what does the red plunger do) because I don't see, or hear it squirting like the old side valve BS engine. Also what is the white plastic barb on the side of the carb for, looks like it should not be there. Regards Dave Porter
