  • Surviving Henry reveals how the Howard family managed to get on the wrong side of the Tudor monarchs with astonishing frequency: Henry VIII and Elizabeth I all had reason to lock up the family in the Tower of London.
More faced the executioner's axe, and Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk, only survived because Henry died the night before he was due to be beheaded. But the Howards were also in demand as soldiers, leading the English victory against the Scots at the Battle of Flodden Field, and suppressing the Pilgrimage of Grace uprising. Traitors and loyalists the Howards were one of the most important families in 16th-century England.

Very interesting history. Henry Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle’s wife Isabella Byron was my connection. She was descended from John Berkeley, 1st Baron Stratton whose brother Sir William Berkeley was colonial governor of Virginia in 1642. Their grandmother Margaret Lygon of Madresfield Court, Worcs. married Henry Berkeley. Sir William Berkeley brought his cousin young Col. Thomas Lygon to Virginia with him, grandson of Margaret Lygon Berkeley’s brother Thomas Lygon. My grandmother was a direct descendant of Col. Thomas Lygon. These interfamilial connections are really wonderful to explore.

Have you done a test with familytreeDNA dot com? I would sure like to find that I am related to you. I am a Howard, and I can trace my Howard ancestry to Matthew Howard who arrived in Maryland Colony in 1635. But so far I have not found a connection in England before Matthew.
