  • During the reign of Tudor Queen Elizabeth I, the monarch had to deal with a number of serious threats and plots against her life and reign. She is considered one of the greatest Queens England has ever had, however her biggest rival was Mary Queen of Scots. One man who was Elizabeth's cousin who plotted against her was Thomas Howard, the 4th Duke of Norfolk. He was the most powerful and influential landowner in England at the time, but he felt undervalued by the English Queen. Because of this he took part in the Ridolfi Plot, and agreed to marry Mary Queen of Scots, and then back a rebellion which would seize the throne.
When Elizabeth I found out about this she was furious, and Howard was placed on trial and found guilty of treason. But the Queen had a serious debate with herself as she struggled to sign the death warrant of her cousin. Eventually she did this, and Howard was taken from the Tower of London to Tower Hill where he met the axeman who performed his execution in front of a huge crowd.

First. Also incredibly interesting how they didn’t want her to think she was above the law but Mary literally burned a shitload of people

Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk was the son of Henry Howard Earl of Surrey (the poet Earl) who was the son of Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk and uncle to Anne Boyelyn, therefore grandson of the 3rd Duke. Surrey was executed on trumped up charges in 1547 (as should the 3rd Duke have been but Henry VIII died before he could sign the death warrant), Surrey quartered the arms of Edward the Confessor which was treason to Henry VIII, but he also made many powerful enemies at court because of his arrogance and temper, mainly the Seymours’ (I’ll leave you to research that but a good source would be House of Treason - Robert Hutchinson)

It's pretty much the same all over the world. People were just incredibly brutal in those times.

I guess that "power" was the ultimate aphrodisiac for these people. Many who took part in these schemes had to realize that they were just a "stroke" of luck away from the executioner's blade. I wonder why they took such chances. I assume they themselves had witnessed beheadings of others, if not routinely, certainly several times/year. It had to be a brutal and nasty business. It is only natural to "imagine" what it is like to experience this capital punishment yourself. Yet, they persisted in various royal politics. Why did they do this?
