Remember the £5 Combat Squad? 5 dudes, a few accessories, and transfers. It was the perfect entry point to 40K and exactly how I started circa 2000. I dare GW to do that now for like, £10-15, and see what happens. Of course doing so would require a modicum of common sense, so it''ll never happen.
Do/Did GW sort of do this? Like they did release in 2018ish with their Build & Paint Model Kits with Revell? They were like 3rd / 4th edition space marines
Those were the good old days. Combat squad for a fiver and I believe a tactical squad was 10 quid at the time. I remember them going up to £6 and £12 too. I think single bikers were also 5 or 6 quid, and the attack bike was 9? With the metal side cart and weapons. Loved the hobby back then, even though I had no idea what I was doing apart from spending hours building and painting.
A perfectly reasonable idea. If GW were smart they'd use this approach to slowly draw newer customers in with small packs like this; going from small squads to kill team to armies.
Reasonable, but then I could remember when you could pick up 20 guardsmen for under £20. So it's not as if GW hasn't done it before, it's just gotten greedy over the years, as its monopoly has grown.
GW used to do this and understood why this is a good idea. Even Last Argument of Kings do something like this. GW DID do this kinda, during the golden age of GW randomly being good value 2015-2019ish the first tier of the starter sets were about £20 and had about 9-10 models each, push fit. Remember them? I think the 40K 8th ed had 3 intercessors, 3 reavers, 3 plague marines and 5-6 poxbearers for like £20. It is always worth repeating over and over 80/90% of GW customers do not touch the game, so "balance" should never, ever be considered when value and accessibility is on the line. Remember GW used "balancing the boxes against each other" with Combat Patrol and Spearhead as an EXCUSE to reduce the models and value, whilst increasing the price lol.
Nah man, to start warhammer you slam down 300-700$ on models and anither 150-200$ on books paints, glues, sand etc. I remember buying 5$ blisters every week, but the good times are gone.
I still remember the 5 push-fit guardsmenwith lasrifles for £4 (IIRC, might've been 5) which was amazing not just for bulking out guard armies but also for testing new paint schemes or as bodies for conversions.
I always liked the thought of putting a small themed barricade terrain piece with each boxed set. It's always nice to get something for your models to seek cover behind.
They will absolutely miss the hype opportunity SM2 has given them if they don’t lower prices. I guarantee so many new players look in see the price tag and immediately nope out.
My first space Marines were one of those old 5 man boxed sets. About all my folks could afford. I remember putting those Marines together and never once playing on the tabletop with them, just used them as little army men facing off against huge foul xenomorph (the poor cat). It was years before I could buy my first boxset and play. Still love those classic Marines almost 20 years later...
Closest they've got right now are the Introductory Set and the Infernus or Termagants +Paint sets, which I could definitely see them doing one of those for every faction and not just the starter box factions.
When I first got into 40K in 97 GeeDubb red shirts would pounce on kids in their stores and ignore me, because the mothers would be more inclined to buy that $50-$60 vehicle kit to stop their kid screaming than someone in their early 30's. Now... there's pretty much zero service in a lot of their stores because most of their sales are done online.
I love the idea, funny thing is GW already had a couple of these like 5 monopose Guardsmen or 3 Intercessors for a couple quid IIRC... As for my first kit, I was already in the uni and had a friend who's was quite as invested so I blew a lot of my summer job money on Assault on the Black Reach, SM battle force box and a box of Assault Marines. Now, more than 15 years later scouts from the battle force box still remain in black undercoat to my eternal shame...
My first purchase was a $15 pack in 9th ed. It was the welcome/starter book, which briefly explained the setting, the hobby, and how to go about building, painting, playing etc. The pack included one Necron Warrior and one Assault Intercessor.
This would be a great idea. But they would never at that price. -$60 65- 68 for a set, maybe. edit: Strike through isn't working. Just imagine a little line through those bits.
personally I want a "chocolate sampler" of every GW mini of the month for that year. I dont live anywhere near a GW and thus I never get that free mini, however I would TOTALLY pay for a combined set of all of those singular minis from all those different factions. Not only would that be great for noobs, but if its priced alright, I feel like theres other people like me that would be happy to get a couple of cool models from new sets that I otherwise would not want to buy an entire box for, and the great thing is, they've already got those models on a sprue for single models so all it costs them is a repackage box. AND from Gas perspective 40k fans might get an aos model, paint it and go "hey I actually might want to make this a full army"
It really frustates me how GW seems to not understand if you price out kids from the hobby, you're killing your franchise. That doesn't mean to say violence should be toned down or aesthetically changed for kids (it was the dark and gothic aesthetic which drew me in as a 4 year old, and later buying my first set at 8 years old). Appeal to kids to bring in new blood, but don't patronize kids
Thomas the tank engine had this problem. First five series were solid stories that adults can enjoy, seasons 10-22 are kiddie stories. The result is that parents turn Thomas off as he's annoying kiddie junk. 40k getting softened is not the answer, pocket money packs are the answer.
it doesnt mean it kills the franchise. they want the most money, and the group with the most money are adults, not kids. Space marine 2 alone brought in an insane amount of people into the hobby. also since their stuff is so insanely overpriced, anything thats cheap will be abused by regulars. it could also be that laws simply hinder em from marketing to kids. all the age ratings have ruined a lot im not defending GW cause theyre so greedy n scummy, but a lot of this is just reality
@GoalOrientedLifting and what happens when those adults leave or die of old age? Yes you may get a very niche amount of new adults buying your stuff, but the majority of new blood introduced to Warhammer are children and teens. But you're correct about GW wanting to squeeze out every penny from their customers, their greed will be their downfall
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 lately the majority comes from games. and thats how they reach the young ones. the show theyre making will probably bring in more. i really wish they did sets for kids. but i think they dont care at all. Brilliant idea. As you say, it's a perfect way to get kids into it or add to an existing army. GW seem to be missing a trick here. Kids get into it, parents are likely going to help with the firsts few models (depending on age), you've gained two or three potential customers from this tiny kit. It would also be nice for me as a customer to be able to take a break from pouring scorn onto GW. A little thing like this could go a long way.
I miss the old £5 sets. I remember some push fit Cadians, CSM and Orks. They were awesome for young me to get cheap troops on the field. GW is pricing both kids and parents out of the hobby these days. Even by 8th Ed 40k they had a cool little £25ish starter set (first strike with 6 marines, 3 Death guard and 6 poxwalkers plus dice, mat, box as terrain, and basic rules) but they're gone now. The cheapest intro set is £42.50.
These would be good. I also think they should make slightly cheaper mono-pose kits for infantry units. There is no reason an intercessor has to be 10+ pieces when firstborns used to be 3-4.
I'd love to see these in a model of the month scenario. Come into store, play a quick one page "official" rules game, then you can buy the pack for £10-15
We're kind of seeing a kind of "enshitification" with businesses that sell luxury goods in general I think, where lower income customers are slowly being priced out in a captured market. The end result is being a smaller albeit wealthier customer base with much higher margins and thereby profits. We see this not only with GW but also with fast food (McD especially), with Disney land, with Lego, etc. There is huge potential profit in catering to rich people because they'll pay nearly any price while having to move less product. Essentially, if you can't afford these prices they don't want you as a customer anyway.
Its a great idea. GW stores have nothing in the ~£10-15 price point. I think in the past they have done 3 model boxes. I have seen that there was once a primaris revivers box with 3 models in for £10. The only think they have in that price point currently is the "Getting Started With" to 40k and AOS pack. Each pack has two unique sculpts and a book explaining the setting in. However that is it. Sometimes I wouldn't mind popping into a store and dropping £10-15 on a couple of models to try something new. There is nothing. The cheapest thing is a single character in the £20+ range. Its probably some clever higher order marketing strategy that tells them if they have nothing in that price range then people will have to buy into the £30-40 bracket if they want anything. They also want to get you on to the £42.50 and £67.50 starter boxes as well. Which is an ok start point but only for two factions per setting. They even do those blind box things in Japan but never bring them over to the UK. I wouldn't mind those for fun either. Instead we get nothing.
