  • It's like Christmas in July! After purchasing the car for $1,000 a couple of weeks ago and completing an inspection of the car it was time to order parts and spend the rest of the budget! Phil had $1,500 left to play with to get this mild mannered "Dad Wagon" to a mixture of safe, fun, and reliable. So what all did he get?
Fortunately the Toyota build drivetrain seems to be in good shape, the 2ZZ-GE engine doesn't smoke and doesn't make any bad noises. The 6 speed manual transmission seems healthy and engages properly. Those are two MAJORLY good pieces of news on this as it allows the remaining funds to go towards more enjoyable things!
Brakes, gotta have brakes! Also, the original lenses and bulbs aren't particularly bright so those need to. A 3M headlight refinishing kit and some cheap LED bulbs should fix that! Steering and suspension just due to the age and mileage of the vehicle should probably be replaced. Wheels and tires, absolutely will upgrade not only the handling but also the LOOKS of this wagon into something a bit more fun.
Oh and we almost forgot, the alternator was no longer charging and needing to be replaced which is NOT a fun experience! The Pontiac Vibe GT and its cousin the Toyota Matrix share a similar layout and ARE reasonably easy to work on for most things. As long as everything goes according to plan!

replacing the AC compressor on my vibe GT was hilarious, the belt and tensioner took 90% of the time...had to use a forklift to get the tensioner to release because the hex cracked :P

Lol, we didn't have to get quite THAT extreme but close! It's definitely the biggest hassle by FAR on this job. Would be interesting to know how many people do it the correct way with the correct tools. As we often say, "There's the right way, the wrong way, and the way we're going to get this done!"

My alternator is original, 225k. Mines a base tho, does that make the Job any easier? More room perhaps….

man i just got an 04 for 2800 otd it doesn't need nearly as much as this but always fun to do it up
I put this exact engine in a mr2 spyder several years ago - first one blew up so I did it twice - the tensioner isn't any easier to get to but it's not too tough to get the belt on ;)

Plans for your 04? Part of the benefit of buying it cheap, left plenty in thr budget for customizing it and making it fun. We've still got less than $2,800 in this thing so far with a LOT of work done... and a few more bits to come ;)
As for the health of this motor and trans.. we're going to cross our fingers and hope for the best! So far no terrible noises :)

@@LucoreAuto GT model, 133k miles. it came with injen intake and magnaflow catback, window tint. 17" factory alloys. It needed control arm bushings and front struts, exhaust clamp, and an air recirc motor, took me one weekend. close to zero body damage. Might be my camping car, road tripper. Very clean, could use a few more maintenance items over the next few years like a belt or a pulley, lift bolts, a few gaskets.

Just curious what size rims and tires did you get and where did you buy them? I also bought a cheap Vibe GT a while back. It's really starting to grow on me.

They are great little hidden gems, very very few people have any idea what they are capable of. This one is definitely going through a transformation right now ;)
Reached out to the owner for the info he should post about it here soon

Dwight, The wheels are Avid.1 AV-06 17x8s with a 5x100 bolt pattern and a +35mm offset. Tires are Dunlop Direzzas 225-45-17 size. Both were available for reasonably cheap on eBay. If you purchase online, be sure to grab a set of new lug nuts, I ordered Doorman part: 711-345 from Rock Auto and a set of hub centric rings from Amazon (or where ever) 54.1mm to 73.1mm (the second diameter will depend on the wheel you purchase).

@@LucoreAuto Thanks for the response, I just bought a 2003 GT and would like to refresh the front end suspension parts like you guys did. Tie rods, ball joints and all the other bells and whistles. The brakes need to be done and the rear struts need to be replaced but I think I will go with tein springs and kyb shocks all around.

I was wondering why the first guy used a 2x4 to prop the hood open 😂

    • @LucoreAuto
      @LucoreAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

What's wrong with a totally terrible wooden hood prop!? ;) Just one of many little "issues" with this car but it's come a long LONG way since!

@@LucoreAuto are there any other videos on this car? I just bought this same model/yr car and it's so hard to find decent videos of people upgrading it
Such an underrated car with the 2zzge engine and the high end clutch on the gt

@@raidzeromatt you can see some of it in the 25002500Roadtrip Playlist. It's definitely hard to find content on this thing, surprisingly it's also hard to find anything recent at ALL about them. We will actually have it in the shop in the next couple weeks go a full exhaust upgrade and another few small things.
