    The end of a coil spring determines if you can cut it. Square ends and pigtail ends can't be cut because you cannot reform the end without ruining the spring. Only cut a coil spring with a tangential end - that is a spring that ends as if it could have continued its pattern forever.
    Never use heat to cut a coil spring. Heat anneals the spring steel, making it brittle. Use a cutoff wheel or a hacksaw (with plenty of elbow grease).

    Keep in mind cutting coils will change alignment; you'll have more positive camber (top of wheel sticks out more, bottom goes in) and if the tie rods are BEHIND the front wheel, it'll be more pigeon-toed, so shorten the tie rods. Do the opposite if they're in the front. The crucial part is toe-in, that'll wipe off your tire edges in short order if the wheels are toed in or out too much; a lot more than camber issues will.

    • @EatonDetroitSpring

      it is always best have your vehicle re-aligned after doing any front end work.

      Are you not mistaken? Lowering a car will give you negative camber, the top of the wheel will stick back in and the bottom will stick out more.

    • @nobodynoone2500

      It depends on the suspension if it changes camber, and how it changes. It will also change the camber curve on double wishbone cars.

    Great video, as for how much to cut, cut less than you think it'll take and keep checking it in the car. If you cut off too much, you're screwed and need new springs. For example I know cutting two coils out of a 2wd GM half ton is too much, it'll bottom out constantly.

      I'm sure you've already done this but for anyone else that may be curious measure the height of the spring; say its 14 1/4 walk your tape measure around the coil until you hit 13 1/4, cut there and you'll get 2" (1" at the spring is 2" at the body). Do this for every coil, don't just assume every coil you purchased will be 14 1/4 (or whatever your height might be) right on the dot, it most likely is but it's better to make sure so you buy once cry once, and always cut the tangential ends.
      Go slow and steady, half an inch, or one inch first just to be sure... but honestly, if you've purchased lowing springs and are taking even more off I would ditch them and purchase coilovers, you can find them all day for a Honda, K&N, Tien, Silk Road (those may be RWD Nissan/86 Corolla specific), etc.

  • @poweredbywinchester7070
    @poweredbywinchester7070 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, typically you take the distance you want to drop the vehicle, and cut half that distance on the spring? Does that go for any amount of drop? If I just want a 1/2 inch drop, I should cut 1/4 inch off the tangential end? Or 1 inch...cut 1/2 inch of the tangential end?

    • @EatonDetroitSpring
      @EatonDetroitSpring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because once the spring is cut you can not add back to it, so we say to only cut off 1/2 of the amount of drop you need. after re-installing the springs and driving her, you may need to repeat the process. Better safe than sorry.

    • @EatonDetroitSpring
      @EatonDetroitSpring  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poweredbywinchester7070Yes, that is normal. It is the nature of larger hot wound coil springs to vary in free height. In fact, the tolerances on some springs by design allow for up to 1/2-inch difference in free height. Because how coils start to take up loads this difference is quickly diminished. Nothing to be concerned about.

      It could be the fault of the springs, or it could be the shocks. A quick way to find out is to take the shocks off and drive it and see if the ride quality changes. If so, its the shocks, if not, its the springs.

      +marvin greene You asked this two years ago and still no answer. The dude was on another video and he wasn't clear about how much to cut on that one also. WTF From the best that I could figure on what the hell he meant is if you measure from the tip end of the coil and project a straight edge horizontally across the spring until 1 in is measured between the top of the spring wire and the bottom of the strait edge, this will give you a 1 inch drop. It just so happened that it took cutting off a 2 inch length of the spring's wire to equal that 1 inch measurement. I wouldn't take that 2 inch length of spring wire as always being equal to a 1 inch drop because some springs may be coiled looser or tighter making the height at 2 inches of coil wire more or less than 1 inch.

    The correct method of lowering a car involves replacing the stock shocks and springs with lowered shocks and springs. Lowered suspension components are readily available for almost all cars. You really should never cut springs and never put shorter springs on a stock shock absorber. Steering, braking and suspension are vital to your car handling safely on the road and dodgy backyard suspension modifications are just outright fucking dangerous. Especially when done by people who have no experience or understanding of what they're actually doing.
