  • 8/8/2015 My flock of Cinnamon Queens is now laying and I've introduced them into my main chicken pen with my Barred Plymouth Rocks. They're getting along great and are all healthy and happy. I have a total of 70 birds.

      I appreciate that. Life has a way of throwing you curve balls here and there. I'm glad to have had the experience, and maybe someday I'll get back to it. Thanks for your comment!

    Great job tap. 50 eggs a day should bring some money into your net! You're well in your way to being a poultry producing powerhouse. Country boy can survive!

    great job. I was juggling the idea between bardrocks and road island reds. but I think bardrocks are broody more often for hatching their own eggs so I might go that route.

      +Nicholas Rudolph I think you're right, at least that's been my experience. But Rhode Island Reds are awesome birds too. You can't go wrong with either. Thanks for the comment!

      +tapq when I was younger we had 7 different breeds. 127 chickens was the most we ever had at once. my favourite were the road island reds. but now that I'm about to have my own flock Id like to do some breeding.

      For what it's worth, I've only had one broody bird and it was a Barred Rock. One thing you might consider is getting a cheap incubator. As long as you have a rooster fertilizing the eggs, you could take them and put them in the incubator and hatch them yourself.

    • @nicnackscorner1031
      @nicnackscorner1031 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tapq that's the plan. but I'd still love to see if I can get a hen to brood and hatch some chicks out of it.

    Have you raised any other breeds of chickens like Wyandottes or Buff Orpingtons? Looks like you have a nice flock. I have heard Cinnamon Queens and Plymouth Rocks are very healthy and lay really well.

    Has anyone ever had a cinnamon queen rooster be the same color as the hens? I have 8 cq's and one of them had an unusually large comb and is bright red instead of the dull pink of the others.

      +Lucas Marten Barred Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Cinnamon Queens, Black Australorps. If you're looking for good egg layers, any of those breeds are great.

    Would you recommend chickens for a family? Are they worth it?

    • @tapq
      @tapq  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure. If you like to eat chicken eggs. It's been a great experience for my family. Start with 3-5 hens and stay away from roosters at least in the beginning.

      The male barred rock chicks have a white dot on their heads when they are very young and otherwise solid black. All black chick is female. I know its a late reply and you probably know by now but thats how you tell when they are small. Good Luck!

    Have you been happy with Cackle Hatchery? Is ity hard to break hens of being broody?

    • @tapq
      @tapq  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have been very happy with them. They sell quality birds. If you collect your eggs regularly and daily you should not have any problems. When the eggs are left in the Nesting Box for days That seems to trigger broodiness.

    • @tapq
      @tapq  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Collin Zappa Tater Salad got mean as he got older. He started attacking my kids and me every time we went into the pen to collect eggs, so we eventually sold him to someone else that needed a Rooster to mate with her hens. We have one of his boys though and his name is Tater Salad Jr. But we just call him Junior.

    How did You build the waterer? Any youtube tutorials for it. I have about 30 Queens in a similar pen and they always get my water dirty. Your waterer seems to solve that problem.

    • @tapq
      @tapq  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Genaro Zegna The watering system is the best thing I ever did for my birds. You can buy the chicken watering nipples off of ebay pretty cheap. I used a 10 foot long section of 2 inch round PVC pipe. I capped one end and put a threaded hose attachment point on the other end. You drill 5/16" pilot holes and then use a pipe threading bit (NPT - National Pipe Thread Taper of 1/8") to thread the holes. Wrap the threads of the nipples with teflon tape and then just screw them in.
      I used a rain water barrel with a spigot on it and hooked up a small hose to the pvc pipe. I used cinder blocks to raise the rain barrel up about 4 feet so that it would gravity feed into the pvc pipe even when the water level inside the barrel gets low. It works great. Not only does it keep the water clean, but I don't have to fill the water every day. I hope that helps.
