I started bow hunting, in high school during the 1970’s. Commercial camo was almost nonexistent and definitely out of my budget. I tie dyed an old pair of sage green Air Force mechanics coveralls. Simple, cheap and effective. Worked great, harvested numerous deer.
I'm sure it would work. Resembles vaguely German flecktarn. I'm interested in making a camo jacket for my outdoor trips, and this technique seems suitable for that.
This is TOTALLY a camo tie dye - you nailed it (yet again!!) Love how the scrunch technique really does render different intricate patterns!!

Yep! The deer don't know if you're wearing a copyrighted overpriced camo pattern or homemade. Shoot they don't seem to care about wearing a block blaze-orange vest so I'm sure this technique is good enough

I am going to try something like this for some desert camo. I will be starting with tan- or khaki-colored pants instead of white though.

To separate the black dye, look into paper chromatography. I saw it used to separate the colors of a black marking pen. I don't remember what solvent was used, but it was probably not a water soluble ink so it wouldn't have been water as the solvent. For water soluble dyes I guess water would do. The best separation came from using the smallest spot of ink.

great camo pattern!! ima try it with the soda ash first and see how that goes!! also, since im making a tarp from an egyptian cotton sheet, i plan to let the dye dry in the fabric without a wash-out and silicone after....im thinking that will lock the color right in....and if not, lesson learned..
How did it turn out for you?
i flubbed it lol, that particular sheet got pink after color remover and i stithced grommets into the edges with an extra piece of canvas for reinforcement. i also ran bankline through the perimeter hem between edges and grommets. not sure if i'll try tyedye again, i think i'll just go with a brown or green. @@fredflintystoneea

Would this work on beanies and denim?
with the water irrigation method oppose to soaking the shirts prior, do you not have to let them sit for 24+ hours before washing them our? or do you simply wash out after the 30 minutes to an hour after the last pour?
I know some people wash after just 30 minutes; but, between my forgetting about the shirts or just doing other things, I still tend to wait at least 12 hours even with hot water irrigation.

Do you clean out the soda ash before dyeing or do you leave it in when it’s still a little damp
You leave the soda ash in. Soda ash is required for the procion dye to bond to the material.
What is the reason for doing the dye first and then the soda ash, does it case a more diffused effect or more bleeding of colors or something like that? You didn't really explain why you changed the order of the steps.
It's a different method called "Low Water Immersion" and here's a previous video I made showing the results: th-cam.com/video/C2wIGe-ZFyI/w-d-xo.html
In this case, I opted for low water immersion so that the colors would not bleed together, resulting in a more camo like result.

Hi, congratulations! How long after I put inks, do I use the baking soda?
The time between the dye application and the soda ash application is up to you. Basically, whenever you feel it's had a chance to reach the coverage you're looking for.
Note: Soda ash is *not* the same as baking soda.

Just one question... do you use all the 4 ounces of each dye for both sides? I'm trying this today and it's difficult for me to judge how much is too much...or not enough dye due to the scrunch.
No, it's been a while but, the 4oz was used across all the shirts made in that session.
That explains why my shirt didn't come out like yours. I used about 1/2 of each color dye solution in one shirt. The black really overtook the other colors. I have another shirt and I'm going to try again :-)) I really love the way yours came out! I'm making it for a friend for a belated Christmas gift! This the closest thing to pencott camo I've ever seen, and for a fraction of the cost. Nice. I'd like to see a gray, black, and three or four color green. A lot of tree bark is gray with each piece of bark outlined in black, at least from a distance. Then add the greens. I really don't know what the obsession with olive green is all about. Any walk in the woods, will show you there is no olive green, unless you're walking with a martini, though it is effective. Think CADPAT meets gray.
Personally, at least around here, it would need some brown as well.
I have the following browns: Earth Brown, Rust Brown, Golden Brown, Khaki, Chamois (very light), Amber Waves (more of a dark yellow), Almond Latte, Rustic Brown, and Forest Floor.
I have the following greens: Sea Glass, Emerald Green, Cayman Isle Green, Forest Green, Avocado, Chartreuse, Moss Green, Bright Green, Olive Drab, and Winter Green.
Let me know what you'd like to see and I'll add it to the list of videos to do within the next few weeks.
I personally really like the OD color. It blends in pretty well with most woodland environments.

What is soda ash? What is its purpose? Where do you get it?
Soda ash is sodium carbonate. It's required to allow fiber reactive dye to bond to the fabric. It's available in the clothes washing section of most grocery stores and Amazon.

This comment isn't related to this video (sorry couldn't figure out how to DM you on TH-cam), but I was wondering if you ever have completed a design where you have manually stitched the pattern. I saw a stitch pattern of a pot leaf that Mr Tie Dye did that I want to apply to a peace sign design, and I was wondering if you had any tutorials on stitching. I like your designs and color schemes the best by far! :)
