Im obsessed with this shirt. Absolutely beautiful!!! I really like u. U are amazing and i really enjoy listening to you. U crack me up big time. U are halarious. Keep up your amazing work. U hve no idea the insparation you have given me along me tie dye journey in the last year
I The overhead view is working well. I like the comments after the washout. These are very helpful to a novice like me. . It's nice to see that experienced tie dyers also have what you call 'failure' . I actually like the end result and think the imperfections are part of the beauty of tie dye.
Получились интересные акварельные переходы - будто рисовали красками по ткани кистями! Благодарю, что поделились свои опытом! It turned out interesting watercolor transitions, as if they were painting with paints on fabric with brushes! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Awesome!! I love how it turned out too. The overhead view helps us to get a better idea of what you're doing. A monitor would definitely help you make sure the camera is getting your movements the way you want. Thanks again
Love the overhead view! Found the post-washout discussion enormously helpful. Also I actually really dig the way this shirt turned out. I know you don’t love it, but I think it’s super cool.
I really like this.your top row before the plumes, love how it is almost 3-D. as an artiest i love colors and abstract form. i would of been so glad to get a result like that. it has like a texture. but my brain can be weird.
This reminds me of a passion flower, the pale blue around the edges is stunning and really sets off the whole design. I love it and for me it is the best one you have done. The Japanese would call this wabi-sabi which is the acceptance of transience and imperfection.
I was a programmer and database administrator for about 17 years, followed by being a commercial photographer for the past 12 years. Flaws and errors are the enemy of almost 30 years of work. :)
Thank you very much for sharing. Appreciate your explanation and details like measurement. Bird eye view is wonderful. I like the outcome though. I love blue colour at the tip. Will try green and black as you did. Thank you once again. Wish you have tutorial video clip for another pattern too.
I love the overhead camera. I feel like I can see your work much better. I also love your commentary at the end. There is real teaching there. I would love it if you would do that with other videos. What did you like about your process and what did you not like?
This shirt is absolutely beautiful despite not coming out like you expected. I love your tutorials. Thank you for sharing and please keep them coming! Do you know about hot water infusion dyeing? I’m curious about that. I like the camera overhead btw. 😊🙏☮️🎸
Dharma has many kinds of blacks available, some bleed out purple, blue, grey... personally I like their "Better Black" pigment because it bleeds purple and blends well with other colors.
Good info, do you know off hand which blacks bleed other colors? I love purps so I'll be picking up some Better Black for sure, kind regards and thanks! 👍
Love the overhead. Take a little getting used to it but it's stellar. Bump up your lighting just a tad... maybe an inexpensive clip on shop light with a 100w... All good otherwise and this is now my fave shirt... Love love it!! You just get better and better
P.s.... SUNFLOWER *wink wink* i agree...the bleed is gonna be very useful and perhaps for 'softer/female/floral applications perhaps... And agreed...flames will just be killer good. As always...thanks for sharing... Love your creativity... Folding the tips in....wow... wicked good idea...
My "day job" is that of a commercial photographer. So, I have a large variety of lighting available; though I primarily use strobes that are fixed on rails for the photography work... There was actually more light available in the tie dye space *before* I re-arranged/re-organized the studio; but, the "day job" takes priority for the re-arranging the space since it's what pays the bills. ;) I'll probably add a couple of cans for two 100w LEDs above the tie dye space in the Fall so I don't need to move lighting around between this space and the area I use for the "Project Time" and "Epoxy Fun" videos.
The view was great! Personally I really liked the comments made after washout. I can understand you not liking the final. But it is still a great looking shirt.
This is so exciting ! First off I love peacocks! But your experiment with this coloration is fab!! Here is my thoughts on your shirt pictured. I love the upper portion , the bleeding so far up is great! The light blue could be from the black dye, but it also could be from the green. Yellow and blue make the green. So experimenting with each color alone will be needed to figure out which is responsible or if it needs both colors together. The lower section that list it’s definition... I wonder if since the fabric is less dense as you go down to the tip , if you only re apply dye to the mid point of the tied section to the top of tied section and left it at that. Or if you just applied dye once. And tried adding more ice only. To help the dye make it all the way through. Because you are trying to get color into the folds but not have it too solid, I think applying dye once but adding more ice could improve chances to achieve what you were thinking. Can’t wait to see more on this concept ! You are right about the technique being good for flames, or sea weed... smoke, fog... space? 🤙🏻
From experience, applying more ice without applying more dye will result in subdued colors. And, I dislike subdued colors. The lowered definition in the lower section is due to my not being as precise with the folds in those areas - especially with "test" designs. Basically, a sloppy fold results in less detail.
Casual Collisions I didn’t think the folds were sloppy, but since there was less volume of fabric the dye put on filled up the folds more complete then the thicker area of folds. You folded one area with extra folds. I will have to go back and re watch the video. Memory fails at the moment .. I see folding .. extra folds.( folding part of the fan folds in half) then the shirt was turned, right there the memory gap is as to which part of the shirt the folded fans were at. 🤣 maybe that is the key also adding in the extra fold most likely added room to make a separation making it look like feathers. Maybe adding one more tie in the lower end of the feathers which would make it harder to get dye down in. Tricky part because I know you don’t want white areas , you want the color saturation but a demarcation line as well. When a real peacock fans out, the closer to the body the feathers are, the more solid it looks across the fan. I love the green in the video. I wonder if there is a dark blue that would separate like the black? Great chatting with you! Makes me want to pull out my dyes and get busy! I’ve just had too much going on lately. ✌🏽
How do you prevent the rest of the shirt that doesn’t have white from dying. I often end up having the white parts of my shirt get faintly stained while rinsing out as well as when I put it through the wash
When you rinse in the sink, you need to rinse with COLD water until you've flushed all the soda ash out of the shirt. After that, you can begin to untie the shirt. Then, in the washing machine, I usually go with cold wash only with an extra rinse. And, If I'm still concerned about the white areas, I may do a second cold wash only. After that - it should be fine.
I love the results, but understand your disappointment that the design didn't turn out as planned. That's actually what I love about tie dye and batik. The outcome is not just what you plan...there's serendipity, chemistry, no way to plan how a particular ice cube melts through the dye, etc. That's the wonder and magic of it. I know you know this, and your thoughts and what you learned about the process are helpful, but being on this end as observer and appreciator, all I can say is, very cool creation! A comment and a couple of questions: Overhead view is great. Would rubber bands work in place of string? What kind of string do you use? Is it waxed? Have you found your designs to be permanent without the addition of extra soda ash, as some artists use? Thank you for taking the time to share your process and expertise!
Rubber bands can be used in place of sinew in many cases; but, you can't pull rubber bands as tight as necessary so the results will not be the same. (i.e. no "white lines", poor separation, etc.) I use flat, waxed, artificial sinew such as: Black Sinew, 300-yard Roll: amzn.to/2XFVBr7 Brown Sinew, 300-yard Roll: amzn.to/2A0OAIB My son has a few shirts that he wore and washed 2-3 times *every week* for a couple of years that had little fading. Basically, what it looks like after it comes out of the dryer is what it will continue to look like for quite a long time. The dye doesn't fade - the fabric wears and results in less color being available due to the decreased size of the threads.
Morning Bob from Oakune NZ Bob l have had a white poncho with blue horse heads from Mexico given me ( it's a bit soft) l would like to dye it dark blue with flames coming up from the bottom, (maybe 1/3 up) is it possible? And what would be the process pl?
Using ice with liquid dye will just dilute the dye - resulting in more pastel colors. The ice allows the powder dye to "split" into its component colors.
If it's Procion dye - it's the same, regardless of the distributer involved. So, I just go with whichever distributer offers the colors I want at the time I plan to order for the best price based on the quantities I'm ordering at the time. I've used Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes from: www.dharmatrading.com www.customcoloursinc.com/ www.grateful-dyes.com/
I love everything about this video. The shirt is awesome. It’s the shirt that brought me to your channel originally. Question: Do you let your shirts dry before you dye them?
I tie and dye almost everything damp. I have a video that shows the differences between dyeing while wet, damp, and dry: th-cam.com/video/kBWDD2OOUa8/w-d-xo.html
Question, what would cause a shirt to look faded after being tie dyed? I have done other shirts before and the colors were all bold and bright. I allowed them to sit in a plastic bag for like 3 days. The one l speak of was a rush job only 24 hours. Did the timing play a part? HELP.
Low concentration of soda ash pre-soak, chlorine in your ice if ice-dyeing, chlorine in your water if liquid dyeing, old dye if liquid dyeing, not batching (waiting) long enough, low temperature during batching, not removing the sizing from the material before pre-soak, etc. There are times where I'll end up with pastel results and absolutely nothing is different than normal -- it's a "throw your hands up" kind of moment where there isn't really any valid answer other than "it just happens". But, it's usually one of the things listed in the first paragraph.
Did you ever end up doing another video to this one like you mentioned at the end of the video? I can’t seem to find it if you have. Also I do like the overhead view
I only use soda ash; and, the shirts I make fade *very* slowly - so much so that one that my son has washed at least once a week for two years is at about 75% of the original color -- after 100+ wash cycles. I have a quart bottle of "dye fixative"; but, it's never been opened. It's been sitting on a shelf for over 5 years.
During the tie dye process, you should not allow the dye to dry until after it's been washed out. Are you using a Procion fiber reactive dye or another type of dye?
Unfortunately, I don't know anyone that can provide translations for the videos. The dyes I use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes and can be purchased from: www.dharmatrading.com www.customcoloursinc.com/ www.grateful-dyes.com/
I think it’s amazing the way it turned out. I would totally buy it!

One of my favorite dyes from anyone that I've seen.
I know how it is when you had something in mind and it didn't go that way. But I like the watercolor effect you got. I would buy that one.

I loved seeing it from above so easy to understand. I also loved that shirt
I would definitely consider this a pleasant surprise as opposed to a “fail”
Great technique!
I get that a lot. But, I don't consider "fail" a negative -- it's just a necessary step from which to learn.
I like it. I would add some fabric paint or liquid dye in spots.
I also liked the camera up above. Thanks
Love the overhead view. The final result is gorgeous. It may not have been planned but it is beautiful! AMAZING!!!
Thank you.
I would say its a win 🏆...that's the beauty of ice dying.
The tip of the accordion "folded in" part came out super cool
This is beautiful! I love it.
Thanks and I appreciate your watching!
The overhead view is perfectly fine with me, I can see clearly of what your doing.
Cool. I made the switch quite a while ago and it's been working out quite well.
I think it was stunning
Thanks.

Nice light blue bleeding! Do you have a video where you use a liquid on this? On full shirt is also great..
Bob Ross of Tie Dye's awesome accidents ! 💪🎨💯

Yes, I have a few videos on HWI and LWI. They should all be tagged with "HWI" and "LWI" in the titles.
I liked the overhead view, better to see how you’re doing the fold and wrap. I also really like the bleed out.
I really like it It is so beautiful!

A red/orange flame version would be amazing
It's been recorded and I'll probably release the video next Saturday, 6/29.
Very nice! Not a fail.
You're being too hard on yourself! It's a tie dye! Okay you're an artist or hard on ourselves! It's amazing! I think the ice is so cool...

What brand of shirts do you purchase to tie dye?
How do you keep the rest of the shirt white during rinse?

A comment and a couple of questions:
Overhead view is great.
Would rubber bands work in place of string?
What kind of string do you use? Is it waxed?
Have you found your designs to be permanent without the addition of extra soda ash, as some artists use?

( it's a bit soft) l would like to dye it dark blue with flames coming up from the bottom, (maybe 1/3 up) is it possible? And what would be the process pl?
Can you do the pattern so the feathers are flowing down the shirt?
Yes, you would just tie and dye the top part of the shirt.
What do you use for the tie dye
This is so cool. Is the ice used specifically for that powder dye or could you use it with regular dye and get a similar effect?
Using ice with liquid dye will just dilute the dye - resulting in more pastel colors. The ice allows the powder dye to "split" into its component colors.
@@CasualCollisions good to know, thank you!
So in your opinion, which company provides a dye you are most satisfied?
If it's Procion dye - it's the same, regardless of the distributer involved.
So, I just go with whichever distributer offers the colors I want at the time I plan to order for the best price based on the quantities I'm ordering at the time.
I've used Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes from:

Overhead view is fine.
Love the view. Much easier to see.
Traditionally tie dye is somewhat imperfect and the result should be somewhat unexpected. I’m at the beginning of tie dye and it’s just a thought.
Why do you turn it inside out?
Beautiful things are never perfect bro... I like the design
Time to dye!!!!!😂
Someone called me out on my choice of words a couple of years ago, so it's intentional now. ;)
Are the shirts inside out when you dye them?
Yes.
@@CasualCollisions Thank you, so much. Now it makes sense.
I'm just starting to tie dye shirts so this might seem like a silly question but why do you turn the shirt inside out?? I haven't done that for mine.
Here's a quick explanation: th-cam.com/video/6VsKeM56QKM/w-d-xo.html
Please do you use soda ash
Para mi esta hermoso 🤩❤️
Thank you.
Did you ever end up doing another video to this one like you mentioned at the end of the video? I can’t seem to find it if you have. Also I do like the overhead view
Yes. It's here: th-cam.com/video/mVBaG3jQs1M/w-d-xo.html
Have you ever used a fixative? A guy told me if I wanted my tye dye to stay to use it but he said it might be an old concept
I only use soda ash; and, the shirts I make fade *very* slowly - so much so that one that my son has washed at least once a week for two years is at about 75% of the original color -- after 100+ wash cycles.
I have a quart bottle of "dye fixative"; but, it's never been opened. It's been sitting on a shelf for over 5 years.
when the black dries with this dye is it still bright? im running into an issue with black dye that it fades when it dries
During the tie dye process, you should not allow the dye to dry until after it's been washed out.
Are you using a Procion fiber reactive dye or another type of dye?
What kind of stri g are you using.
It's artificial, waxed, flat sinew. It's available at: www.amazon.com/shop/casualcollisions
Is it hard to do that? Looks very 😎 I would ❤ to do a hot Pink and Black
Peacock patterns are pretty easy to do.
Overhead💯 for sure
Yep - made the switch a year ago and almost everything is shot overhead now.
Would you use the powder dye or liquid dye?
I usually use powder.
Maravilhosa arte tie dye!
Thank you.
Good morning, my friend.🙋
Por favor. Como conseguir tradução pra português desses áudios? Tenho q contratar alguém? E as tintas? Onde achar?

The dyes I use are Procion Fiber Reactive Dyes and can be purchased from:
www.dharmatrading.com
www.customcoloursinc.com/

Can you use the regular dye
Procion fiber reactive dye is permanent. If you use something like RIT - it will fade after the first wash cycle.
