Riding PA Route 345: Exploring Southeast Pennsylvania's Unofficial Motorcycle Road

  • In Southeast Pennsylvania, we have a number of excellent roads, and Pennsylvania Route 345 is probably the closest thing we have to an Official "Unofficial Motorcycle Road."
    PA Route 345 winds through the French Creek State Park and offers riders plenty of bends to enjoy. It is especially nice in the warmer months due to the tree cover and shade.
    As I ride Route 345, I talk about the road and my upcoming plans - in typical Motovlog fashion.

    Shed Rd off of 345 is amazing as well. Shorter than 345, but a great combo ride.

    Hey Walt, I’m in Trappe, next to Collegeville, close to Ursinus College. I run 345 coming from 724 heading toward 23. Love this road with the curves and the elevation changes. I’ll run it with my Kawi Versys 1000 or my recently acquired Harley Heritage. One of these days I’m going to turn off heading to French Creek. Glad you enjoy this road and area too.

    Look at the ARC's at Pocono or PittRace if you can't make the IRC, free track day without the need for full leathers or prepping the bike for a track day

    • @WaltInPA

      I'm scheduled for an IRC in a couple of weeks and look forward to it. I'm not thrilled with the idea of Norristown traffic but it should be a good day of training nonetheless.
      I think I'm going to try Pocono Raceway. I have family in the Poconos so I may be able to make a weekend out of it.

      It was nice to just get out and do a little riding and chatting. It's been a little while since I've been able to do that.
      How is the riding in Japan? Have you been able to get out much?

    Stumbled on your video. Thanks for the trip. My buddy and I ride up to SE PA quite often from middle Delaware (our roads are flat and boring). You just gave me another place to ride. A nice note for us, Rt 82 (we ride a lot) leads to 345, so I made a route to follow. If you don't mind a little travel south of you, I have a great PA route that is along the Susquehanna River.

    • @allandeal5273
      @allandeal5273 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No offense...but you look old enough to be able to follow directions to use a map... (I'm 51) .....so here...
      From Lancaster, follow 222 south towards the Susquehanna River until you find Furniss Road (turning west), Follow Furniss road until it intersects with River Road (turn west). River Road intersects with 372, turn north. River Road will pick back up about 2 miles north. Turn North West onto River Road (road 3017). Follow River Road until it intersects with 324, turn west, River Road picks back up in about 100 yards turning North. Eventually, River Road becomes Conestoga Road when it runs next to a stream. Follow Conestoga out and it will eventually become Long Lane as you pass Rock Hill Bridge (old metal bridge). Long Lane will take you back to 222 after about 5ish miles.
      Now, be warned, there are some sharp curves and blind curves. Watch your speed and your lane. There is also loose gravel at times, and of course horse droppings. Some curves have a drop off as you are elevated, so pay attention. Be mindful of things in the road like sticks, branches, and rocks in the wooded areas and spots where the road was carved into a hill. It takes me about 2 hours to get to this route from Delaware, but it's worth it for me. I have a ball. Gas up in Quarryville as there isn't anything until you finish the loop back by Lancaster.

      Thanks for the recommendation!
      I mapped out the route and it looks like it is 160 miles and nearly 5 hours round trip for me. It looks like a lot of fun and I haven't spent much time that far west.

      @@WaltInPA 5 hours....ah easy....
      Should be a lot of fun on that 400. I've ridden it on my cruiser, Ninja 250, and a few days ago on my Ninja 650. I worked the hell outta that Ninja 650 gearbox, smiling the entire time. Pointer, there are a few very sharp "S" curves, brake brake brake. Use the rear as gentle as you can and be careful of over using your front brake. You don't want to fold up your front end on the sharp turn.

    Yep PA 345 is a great road for riding! You do need to be careful about pedestrians around French Creek tho, on weekends that area of 345 is incredibly busy.

    I’ve only been on that road for a short stretch from 422 into Birdsboro. Did you start the video from Rt 23? Next time I’m up that way I’m gonna jump on that road!!

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I started it at Rt. 23 and rode it out to Rt 724 (about a half-mile from the Car Museum we visited this weekend). If you were coming from Birdsboro, it used to be nice if you crossed Rt. 23 and kept going but the bridge construction creates a detour. It is still nice but it used to be a straight shot all the way to Coatsville that was a fun ride.
