@vidstar1 Wrong. You name the foundation and Eddie Murphy has made very generous contributions to them. Even if Murphy gave a trans person a ride, he wasn't drugging them to take advantage of them. Furthermore he was not accused of anything illegal. That story is blown out of proportion and is likely pure BS. Personally, I doubt he knew and secondly who freaking cares. He is funny and I like him because of his comedy. You are surely connected to Cosby in some way, which is maybe why you defend him. Sure Cosby was great in his day. But he is obviously a huge hypocrite, and apparently has been one for a very long time.

“I want to be one of the funny ones”... WOW still crazy to me that such a LEGENDARY comedian like him “hopes” he is funny.

Yes, it was.
It seems to be a very strange, unique sort of alchemy with a fair amount of comedians. On one hand you have to have a certain degree of brash confidence to get up on that stage, you obviously THINK you're funny enough that you could entertain these people and make them laugh, that comes from a heightened level of at least one of your abilities. But at the same time so many of them can lean so well into self deprecation because it's coming from a genuine place. They ultimately have a low self esteem if not a straight up self loathing. I think people like Larry David and Marc Maron are quintessential examples of this. They have really not much of an ego at all that you might otherwise expect to come along with the first part. Not coincidentally, but they also have a high level of empathy (that probably may not on the surface seem the case with David in particular, but if you really think about it, he does).

However, he himself may see things differently. Maybe he doesn't see himself as one, and possibly, likes it that way. Being a "legend", may mean to him as being at your pinnacle with nothing left to explore. Eddie seems to like that exploration. He likes to reinvent himself, to discover new limitations to be broken down. It keeps him on his toes; t keeps him hungry. Maybe he sees individuals like Richard Pryor, Carlin, Redd Foxx, etc., as legendary comedians, and sees himself as something of a professional student in comedy who is always trying to prove himself; to himself, to his peers, to the masses, etc.
(I'm sorry my response is equivalent to an essay. LOL I just wanted to share some thoughts. Some unsolicited, essay-esque thoughts. LOL)
Eddie got some introspection about his career in SNL. He's a true comedy legend after all these decades.

Just think 🤔 he was still at his parents house 🏡. His parents took him to his comedy gigs at the age of 15, 16, and 17.
Great job, Eddie. You killed it last show. Also, SNL needs to start putting more of the 1980-85 videos up on TH-cam(The Whiners, Vicki the Valley Girl, Paulie Herman, The Interesting Four, etc). They weren't ALL bad. Also, some of the music acts from that era were great too: Prince, Miles Davis, Debbie Harry, Funky 4+1(first hip hop group to perform on SNL).

Glad to see more people defending 80-85.. one of my favorite eras of the show. It wasn't bad at all honestly I love the 82-83 seasons they had some hidden gems on there that not many remember (1983 had a lot of MTV parodies and the Don Rickles episode is one of the best the show's ever had.) Billy Crystal's era gets all the good reviews but Eddie's years were more fun imo.
I've been watching a lot of Eddie Murphy's old stuff on here.
Tyler Beamer same here I’m also a fan of the early mid 80s stuff. The show did a lot of edgy things and the musical acts were incredible. I always felt like Ebersol was willing to take risks and let the performers have more leeway. Lorne was way too formulaic (Ivy League, too cool for the room type humor) for my tastes and I’m sure he’s the reason most of the 80s stuff has been buried.
@@Narrate918 Yeah very much so.. Lorne's ego is way too big to allow that era to be shown fully (prob the main reason why we haven't had their seasons on DVD yet.) He's admitted he could never allow himself to watch the show between those years.. why I have no idea. I guess he's that arrogant about the show. When Doumanian took over after not asking him, he considered it a personal insult and anyone who went with her was out of his life and blacklisted. Bill finally hosted but he did it more due to feeling sorry for her. Dick was smart enough to ask for Lorne's approval which is what saved him and the show pretty much. All of Dick's years were fun.. the first one was very chaotic due to O'Donnahue and it's a tale of 2 season's pretty much but there were a lot of experimental skits that would have never happened otherwise. It's a random year, it goes down as at it's worst a noble failure but at it's best it was quite fun. . 82-83 were gold years due to Eddie especially 82. 83 he was out the door but he had some gold and Belushi/Kroger got their chances to shine and it was really fun. The All Star year I like okay but there weren't many shows and the side cast was undeservingly buried imo. Gary Kroger's one of my all time favorite cast members sadly he never had his full chance.. same for Jim Belushi, and Robin Duke/Mary Gross.
Lorne pretty much took the job back over before that year's last show and was in the office more or less rushing everyone out, shows how big his ego was. Supposedly according to the 80's era SNL book Dick was beyond pissed at Lorne for acting like that. Lorne musta thought he was gonna kick tail easy that 1985 season.. he landed on his face pretty hard. He got lucky after that.. the show coulda easily ended. I like the 86-89 years but yeah I can 100% see where you're coming from in terms of being formulaic.
This was so heartwarming to watch. Eddie is a great storyteller and his SNL journey is definitely a legendary one to tell. I look forward to this series.

Eddie was a legend. dude was doing stand up at 16. about time he got to SNL he was the host of is own show by the 2nd season. But yeah he is one of the few that gave up his career ito hollywood within just 2 seasons and I wouldnt blaim him

idk if there will ever be another like Eddie Murphy. Eddie was THE star on SNL when he was only 20-21, was the biggest stand-up of the 80s, and was one the most bankable actors of the same decade. By the time Eddie was 23, he had already starred in 3 blockbuster films, released Delirious, and closed out one of the best tenures on SNL.
Eddie was also perhaps the first Black movie star- setting the stage for others like Denzel and Will Smith. People always talk about successful predominantly Black casts in movies nowadays but Eddie was probably the first to do it with Coming to America.
Hattie Mcdaniel, Sidney Poitier, Richard Pryor to name a few.
@@g.cosper8306 Those are highly esteemed and critically acclaimed actors but I called Eddie the first Black movie star bc he was bankable and his movies in the 80s made a ton of money. Richard Pryor in comparison did a lot of movies but his only truly successful ones were Silver Streak and Stir Crazy.
@@kawaiiafangirl Pryor had been stealing scenes in movies throughout the 70s. You HAD to have him in a film as that was becoming $$. From Lady Sings The Blues, The Mack, Uptown Saturday Night, Bingo Long & His Traveling All Stars, Car Wash & the movie where he shows up about halfway through and steals that movie and showed Hollywood that Blacks would still go in droves to the theaters to see an interracial buddy( Hello 48 hrs & Lethal Weapon) movie like they did the Black films of the 70s targeted to them-Silver Streak. His starring roles in Which Way Is Up( huge) & Greased Lightening showcased him carrying films as lead. The ensemble film Blue Collar( like a few of his earlier films) showcased his range as an actor( as did Some Kind Of Hero) Columbia Pictures did not sign him to the then unheard of 40 million dollar 4-5 picture deal to act/produce because of the 2 buddy films you mentioned. Aside from Burt Reynolds, he was the most bankable draw at that time- and the diversity of audiences paying movie tickets to see him was of a whole another level even from Reynolds. Hell there only was a 3rd Superman movie because Pryor agreed to be in it. And while Christopher Reeve was perhaps pissed about, not even Superman himself was going to be getting paid more for that movie than the funniest man to walk this earth. Sidney was the first (& only allowed) major black film star for many years until black audiences viewed Melvin Van Pebbles independent classic "Sweetback" & saw the need for a more kick ass lead that wins. Eddie Murphy took things to another level in 1982 as mainstream film audiences had never seen a character like Reggie Hammond on screen before. Murphy took the diverse film audience of Pryor and added to that to become the biggest movie star ever - and in my mind still no one actor since has had that rainbow hue of audiences paying to watch whatever vehicle he's in.
@@MrNewktrane I agree w/ you that Pryor was an absolute scene stealer in any movie he was in and that he helped pave the way for someone like Eddie Murphy in the big screen. I don't consider him a huge draw in the box office though, although had he been allowed to star in Blazing Saddles like Mel Brooks intended for him to, I have no doubt in my mind that he would've been a larger star. Superman III also flopped. Apart from Burt Reynolds, guys like Robert Redford (The Sting, All the President's Men), Clint Eastwood, and Steve McQueen (Papillon, Towering Inferno) were more most likely considered larger movie stars than Pryor.
@@kawaiiafangirl In terms of Blazing Saddles had Mel Brooks actually fought for Pryor to be in the lead role as previously agreed upon- but he didn't . The movie folks considered Pryor too hot to "handle"because of his ground breaking stand up. And considering he co wrote the original screenplay & the most famous scene in that movie the beans by the campfire scene, that whole movie is different with him as lead role. In the mid 70s Rich was labeled dangerous by the major film studios- hence the many years going by until he got lead roles. And of course once Hollywood saw how much $$ he was bringing in, that 'dangerous' label gradually fell by the wayside. It doesn't matter if you consider him a huge draw at the box office- because from the time he started getting lead actor roles in the late 70s-mid -80s he was money . Much more than those you named with the exception of Eastwood. And as pointed out before his audience paying movie tickets to see him was way more diverse than any of those you mentioned & his flexible 40 mill film deal with Columbia was without peer at that time as well.

The man, the myth, the legend. Murphy was one of the funniest appearances in SNL in a while. It's awesome to see the human part of what goes into hosting, and then seeing Eddie succeed makes it even better.

They really did.. the group with them gets the shaft unfairly though. Tim Kazerinsky, Mary Gross, Robin Duke, and Gary Kroger especially do, they were the hard lifters who helped Eddie and Joe not be so overworked and over-pressured, same for Jim Belushi when he joined in 1983.It was a true group effort even if Eddie and Joe got the hype.

mind you I don't say this in any way whatsoever as a criticism or slight on Eddie Murphy, but looking at that clip, I have zero doubt that Will Ferrell doing the same sketich would've legit ate real dog food lol He's got an almost Andy Kaufman-type level of commitment to the details of whatever bit he's doing. I mean in one of the other videos Ferrell talks about how he wore the same highly specific costume from an old sketch to the SNL offices every day for a year after a co-worker jokingly suggest he do so. god that just reminded me of a random story, one of the kids in my high school wore shorts one of the first days of the school year, another student bet him he wouldn't continue to wear them every single day til graduation. HE DID, even in the dead of fucking winter (in a very rare year when the school never bothered to start disallowing shorts toward the end of Fall like usual)

He avoided SNL for decades and he had his reasons for not wanting to go back to host but you can tell it was cathartic for him and may have helped him get back in touch with that kid who just wanted to succeed

It was a great show. I liked how they incorporated the modern with the classic, ie The Masked Singer with Buckwheat. But Gumby stole the show! 😂😂

FACTS! I was too. I had excitement the entire week before it even premiered. I hope they keep him around also. Hopefully Lorne wasn't too upset from that swear slip to hold it against him, I would love to see him pop up in things like some of the old cast😛
I think he'll now be a regular host. He needed the right time to come back and this was it. They revisited most of the old characters so they can get some fresh things for him to do next time. However, I'd love to see Gumby interrupt Weekend Update from time to time unannounced. I could watch that all day.
He is way above SNL now to be a regular. It's just an antiTrump show lately anyways.

That whole cast from '81 on was good all around. Even Brad Hall and Robin Duke. Great shows back then.
Thank you! The whole cast then were aces.. Tim, Mary, and Gary Kroger were my favorites. Gary coulda been one of the all time greats if he had more support and time, he had the misfortune of being on the year Crystal and Co came on and took their thunder. If they had a more comedic minded producer instead of Ebersol there's no telling how great the 81-83 group coulda been including Eddie. Thankfully they knew enough to let Eddie and Joe shine but everyone else shoulda have too.

I was still a kid in 81 and I will forever remember exactly where I was when I saw, Mr Robinson’s neighborhood, Delirious, and Gumby. I grew up with this man, and he’s been funny forever.

Eddie may be a grandfather, but he still and always will have such a youthful spirit. He makes all of us remember a better time, so many memories full of laughter that brought us joy and he totally feeds off of our laughs. He still has that gleam in his eyes when he’s got a captive audience. The laughter fuels him. That laughter being the best medicine has kept him young. A tremendous gift for him, but mostly for all of us. 🐐🃏🤩
When he or Seth Rogen laughs, one laughs. It’s inevitable. So fcking contagious!

I was born in 1981.. Eddie Murphy has been one of those entertainers I've always been able to see no matter where I lived.. no matter how many times we moved.. & I lived in a lot of states & a lot of cities... my dad couldn't hold a job to save his life ... we lived at a camp site for awhile... the guy finally had to start his own company just so he wouldn't get fired.. but I'm off topic... just thank God for people like Eddie Murphy b/c there are a lot of people like me who needed that consistency in life... when so many things change or go away... for all these years we've had Eddie Murphy

One of Murphy s best qualities is the ability to save a bad sketch. No matter how awful a sketch is he will make it work and get a laugh. I've seen him in the worst snl sketches and he stilll found a way to make me laugh. He can still do it, as shown in the last show.

Eddie was one of my favorite comedians growing up. Is always watch snl with my parents. My dad even let us watch delirious and raw back then. Of course I didn’t get all t he jokes but laughed at the ones I understood. I used to have the golden child on vhs and watched it over and over. Eddie is a legend.

SO SO SO SO glad that Eddie has returned to SNL. He is an SNL legend. There would be no SNL today without Eddie. The whole cast from that era is so underrated - Mary Gross, Robin Duke, Tim Kaz, Joe Piscopo, Brad Hall . . . .

Well as far as living up to expectations, as far as l'm concerned Eddie exceeded them. So glad funny and edgy Eddie Murphy is back. There's no one greater. Now l'm waiting for his next appearance!

The man, the myth, the legend. Not only is Eddie one of the best entertainers to ever walk the face of the earth, think of the road he help pave for those doing it today.
So much great comedy wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for Eddie. Beverly Hills Cop are still movies I watch regularly, along with 48 hours, Coming To America, and hell even Boomerang.
I remember being just the right age for "Vampire In Brooklyn" which I'm sure most people have forgotten. But not me. Eddie Murphy and Wes Craven? Sign me the hell up, please. I watch it every year along with other Halloween staples.
