Good impulsive comedy always gets a bad rep, just like South Park, it's a similar concept because they too put a whole episode together in a week and Matt & Trey say if they had longer, most of the good comedy wouldn't make it because you spend too much time rewriting and overthinking things that they may become "unfunny" in a writers mind. I don't think it's hit or miss at all with SNL or South Park, they both in most respects reflect society in the best comical forms possible, and a lot of those jokes are often misunderstood because they're aimed at the people who do said/those things lmao. Comedy is the greatest thing ever, SNL is a staple in comedy and shows that you can still be ruthless in these times.
i used to sadly be like this and skip the show all together bc "it's boring" or "i dont know who the host is so why watch" but s46 was the first time i watched every episode no matter if i knew the host/musical guest or not and just enjoyed the show for what it is and remind myself this is incredibly difficult to put together. i started enjoying snl a lot more and now it's my favorite show no matter who's on. comedians can't be funny 24/7, a joke is always gonna fall through at some point!! when you start to realize that it makes it a lot more enjoyable.

SNL saw me through some serious times of depression and sadness for years. Luckily, that is pretty much behind me, but I still so appreciate this show. For one thing, I am much older now, but still am interested in hearing and learning about new artists. SNL helps with that, for sure.
And the fact that they posted it to TH-cam so quickly for those of us who live in certain states where we quickly lost everything with the help of our elected politicians shows with the great talent and crews who kept working and sharing with us was greatly appreciated.

I struggled with crippling depression during lockdown to the point of almost giving up (glad I didn’t) they gave me so much joy that watching SNL was the highlight of my week, I thank them for helping me get through it and reminding me dark times are temporary. god bless their hearts!
Same, Rosalyn!... Like, I was seriously making sure my affairs were in order, but if it were not for comedy (i.e.: on SNL + Colbert & the Jimmys) & the also often much despised Fbook, am certain I would not be here today. Particularly watching Kate McKinnon from home with her cat & as losing it as Dr. Weknowdis made me realize that even those who are famous were struggling so I needn't be so hard on myself! ~ You are a beautiful being & we all must remember we have so much left to offer the world (even when it feels as if it is crashing down around us... or perhaps in SPITE of it!) 🥰
There were a couple of shows and services I saw that really stepped up to the plate to help people. The main one that helped me was Taskmaster. Their TH-cam channel is a big focus for them and they had competitions and stuff, which i thought was so cool for everyone stuck at home, but mainly for me it was just watching the shows, usually full episodes. They're so funny and everyone is so lovable. SNL really helped too. And i can see why they were allowed to work when some people weren't. Like everyone i know had to work too, because they are essential.
The irony being that sharing a mask negates a lot of the procedures in place to keep them safe. They had people monitoring their behavior and they let it slide!😏🤔But seriously, I'm impressed by all of the creative methods they used to stay safe, because of this and the fervent testing in place, I think in this moment it was a calculated risk.
I don't want to argue whether masks help or not. I believe that it has been wiser to wear them like doctors have been ordering all the time. 🤷🏼♀️ I really liked Cecily's gesture, though. She helped her friend in need. Aidy stopped panicking/worrying and stopped feeling alienated. She could stay on the stage and be just as everyone around her, not feel ashamed of lack of mask. Cecily's decision was risky but kind as hell.
SNL S46 was probably the only normal thing I could count on. I would watch some of the skits over and over just to get thru the week. And just let me say Cecily's 'Pirro" on the last Weekend Update was a classic.
Why the heck does he bother me? It honestly bugs me that I can't figure out if he's too over the top, too flaming or just not funny to me. He reminds me of Terry Sweeny a bit, willing to go anywhere. Ferrell had a negative review of his first show hanging in his office at 30 Rock for his run at SNL, to remind him that he is not going to be funny for everyone. It could be as simple as that. What was your favorite SNL bit of Bowen's, David?
He is one of the reasons the show should just completely gut the cast and start over. They are just not funny. There where some dark times in the past for SNL, and they are back. I love Keenan Thompson, but even the stuff he does now is not good. Time to revamp!
@@richardphysician5640 Maybe you don't like gay men who are a tad femme? Or really femme? Does it make you uncomfortable or does it annoy you? I mean this could all be related to underlying homophobia. That isn't a read, by the way, you genuinely asked which sketches OP liked which leads me to believe you want to like him. I just think perhaps you may want to evaluate why you dont like "flaming" comedians. Before Bowen was cast as an actor, he was a writer on the show-- so you probably like a lot of his work already and don't even realize it.
As someone who worked on the front lines during the pandemic, SNL was a big thing that got me by (and it has always been a show I enjoyed, in both good and bad times) but to know how carefully they did everything and managed to bring something so important (art, relief, joy, laughter) to people in my field made me swell with pride and respect in the sense that they considered the safety of others while doing so. Thank you, SNL.
@Daniel Drader there are a lot of different skits that the cast needs to memorize so they don’t make a mistake for the final airing of the episode. With that comes remembering every skit they are in with remembering everything they have to do and every line they have. So that seems like a lot of work, just because they memorize everything doesn’t mean they remember everything so they need to use queue cards. And you have to remember that a lot of parts are pre recorded so they film it one day and put it in the SNL segment the day that episode is being aired.
@Daniel Drader well a lot of parts are pre recorded so they dont need to use queue cards but incase they are needed they are used. The cast cant remember everything the say and do in each skit so the queue cards are there to help them. in a lot of cases they are not needed but sometimes they are needed.
@Daniel Drader yes i agree that they dont need to use the cards for the pre recorded skits. And they are using the cards to much. but if they are doing more than one skit back to back or a few minutes after the previous skit they might need the cards.
@Daniel Drader I don't actually think you have any idea what you're talking about. I'm a professional musician, that's like asking me why I'm reading sheet music when rock bands play everything from memory. The answer is, because often I see music for the first time the day I'm going to perform/record it. Then I dump it and I'm on to the next gig. These guys are the same. They have a dress rehearsal on Friday then it's game day on Saturday. Then they dump it and move on to the next show, which hasn't been written yet. You'd have to have a photographic memory to memorise your lines every week. That's not to say that some have better delivery of the lines than others when they're reading them, but it's not like you're doing a 3 month run of a play where they have loads of rehearsal and time to learn lines.
This was my literal favorite season of SNL not necessarily because the sketches were any better than usual but there was this sense of comradery between the cast members and the viewing audience so cathartic for me. Although I have never met these people it truly felt like we were all in this together. This is mostly likely the only season I have watched each episode right when it aired. It felt so important to me in a time of such isolation to know that I wasn’t alone in my feelings of bafflement about what was going on in our world. Each week when I turned on SNL I felt like I could exhale a little bit . Thank you guys for helping my family get through horrible year!!!!
The fact that they had to still do costume changes in the same amount of time with only one person for costume/makeup is NOT giving enough credit to how they were able to pull it off without the audience noticing a difference is PHENOMENAL
I know it was very hard to do the show during the pandemic but you all managed to do it and I know we all appreciate it very much, you guys make us laugh all the time and even though it was hard to make SNL happen this year, you all did it and we appreciate that.

I was teaching at a preschool in Florida throughout the pandemic, I had to go in every morning, smile on behind the mask and be cheerful in front of twenty 3-4 year olds. They were old enough to ask me tough questions too. I spent a lot of nap times with one air pod in, watching snl compilations. This show, this cast, everyone behind the scenes, got me through some hard days. Thank you.
Aidy Bryant is the most underrated cast member on SNL. She's consistently hilarious and her style of humor is awesome. I hope she doesn't leave anytime soon, but if she does, she should get her own talk show on HBO (ala Last Week Tonight) or do a buddy comedy with Kate McKinnon (ala Baby Mama or a 'Twins' remake).
SNL has been the one constant in my life. From high school thru my college days, my adulthood, and now thru the beginning of my senior years. Always on point and I imagine will last long after I’m gone. I love this show.
If the rumors are true, just about half of the current cast will be moving on and thats kind of sad. This cast had to be one of the most talented Ive seen in years. The political sketches along with Weekend Updatd with Jost/Che were hilarious. And these kids managed to work seemlessly with former SNL alumni and and reoccuuring guests like Eddie Murphy, Alec Baldwin and Bill Hader. And I have to give a shout out to Pete Davidson who hung in there despite a whole range of personal issues. Sorry to see them go.
Your screen name cracks me up. My oldest brother(RIP) always knew how to find the cool stuff when we were growing up. One thing was the Fat Freddy's Cat and The Freak Brothers underground comics. I was twelve when he started bringing those home and they were very educational if you know what I mean. 🤣🤣
SNL had brought me so much joy this past year, even more than ever before. What a symbol of community and entertainment and love. Thank you so much SNL.
Based on all of the restrictions, it would’ve been understandable if this season fell a little flat, but after the first few episodes it became one of the funniest seasons in a while. So proud of the whole cast, crew, and writers.
Lorne Michaels will be missed so much when he retires. I’m 42, and I’ve been a loyal Saturday Night Live fan since I was 10 years old when my dad showed me Phil Hartman. I’ve Never Missed a show since! I hope I somehow get to NYC to watch a Lorne SNL before he sails off.
After the Elon Musk episode a lot of people were saying that SNL hasn't been funny since the 90s... Obviously they only watched that one episode since the season as a whole was hilarious (especially the rap sketches and Jeanine Pirro)
TH-cam was flooded with the ehole SNL sucks now, they just watched Elon Musk ep which no one wanted to do and based a whole 20 year amount of work in their shitty 3 min videos....
People have been saying SNL hasn’t been funny since….(put in info here) in the 90s they said the same thing. They have always been funny. Just not funny to some.
Maybe it's people who's businesses were shut down and/or went under due to lock-downs, and the threat of legal action in some states. Orrrr, maybe it's people with businesses that were burned out or destroyed in the name of justice, all while the pandemic was such a hot topic. Just offering another point of view. Good to see that the big money folks at SNL are faring well though. ;) The actors' salary is based on how many years they have been in the show. They mostly get either $25,000 for each episode or $525,000 every year.
SNL gave us a great season at a time when we needed them the most. I really wish every one of them would come back for at least one more season...love this cast so much! My 14-year-old granddaughter was totally into it, too...funny, because at her age, I was really into the very first season of Saturday Night Live.
SNL is the F1 of comedy, everything is high pressure, last minute and everything works out miraculously It’s such a niche form of very rushed comedy, there’s nothing like it
So, VERY, blessed to have this show this past year. It was a cathartic experience, FULL OF LAUGHS, that I couldn't have survived without. Thank, ALL of, you for everything you did/sacrificed/created. You were a light.
I wonder if you all realize...you saved us. SNL has been there since I was 20, that it was still there meant so much. You made me laugh but the past year you made me cry, too. Thank you so much!
Show business often breaks people down mentally and emotionally so when they get emotional over an especially hard run, it’s easy for people with typical jobs to look at them like weak whiny babies. The mystery of the job also leads many others to create Satanic conspiracy nonsense to explain away the fact that entertainers are people just like them. I just want people to understand it’s a very overwhelming business and we rely on entertainers to help keep us sane and we should just accept that and pull back with the judgments and assumptions. It’s obviously unhealthy to worship or obsess over celebrities in any way but you don’t have to go the opposite direction to the extreme. SNL has always been and will always be hit or miss, just due to the format and constraints. But when it hits, it hits damn good.
I often read SNL reviews on the AV Club and this season they were pretty middling to OK, but I think that if the reviewer were to watch this doc they would seriously reconsider the grades they had been giving. I cannot begin to fathom the insanity of what they pulled off, truly impressive and commendable.
Watching this, I find it more interesting than anything they put on. They should change the way they do the writing. Go back to the days of Sid Caesar when they came up with ideas, decided what was the best, and then go work on them until they work. Why write all those sketches to get what they need? I'd be a little annoyed if a lot of the stuff I was working on there wasn't getting on the air.
I still can't imagine how hard it was to shoot, edit, and cobble together all of those at-home episodes. Whomever did all of that editing on "What's Up with That?" deserves an award.
People like to bag on SNL these days, but its obvious they put in a ton of work and are passionate about what they do. Let them do their thing; comedy is a spectrum and doesn't have to be at full genius levels to please everyone. And if some people love it, let them love it. The world is jagged and cruel enough as is, let people love the things that makes them laugh and feel a little better about life. Quit pissing on other peoples cheerios you hypercritical hipster trolls
@@VXVirtuoso I noticed you're replying to most comments here defending your dislike for the current cast and your enjoyment of the older 90s version. I hope you understand that you don't need to be and that it's okay not to like them. Agreeing to disagreeing especially in comedy helps people enjoy what they like and rag on what they don't. You have nothing to defend for not liking them, same as how we have nothing to justify because we do. Say what you need to say firmly once and all that. I hope you have a nice day!
I’m truly humbled by the entire cast and crew at SNL. I remember as I was watching, as we were all experiencing our own turbulence through pandemic life, how amazed I was at what SNL was producing. The home shows were some of my favorite SNL shows ever, also they gave me the feeling that we were all in this together and would survive it together. I commend SNL for taking all the steps from quarantine to coming back to the office in such a careful manner to keep everyone safe and healthy.
So moving when the cast tears up at the end. The worst thing about Covid is it halted human contact. Just being able to sit with and touch another human clearly meant so much to them, as it would anyone.

It happened because people allowed irrational fear to let it happen. What a bunch of self righteous virtue signalers... while garbage men, truckers, Healthcare, fire, police, grocery, retail, fast food workers, all worked the entire time. My employer didn't shut down for a single day. I traveled to 122 hotels, 54 cities, 18 states, in 2021 and this is how people let the tyranny get where it got to. 2 realities.
I needed this show during the pandemic. I needed to laugh. Doing quarantine alone sucked! So many of us needed to still see something familiar. SNL stepped up! ❤️
That name change sketch was one of the funniest, most innovative, and also most classic the show has put on in years. I fell back in love with SNL on that one.
I absolutely love seeing behind the scenes content, it helps see everyone on a more real note and its beautiful, it shows that they're real people doing a job. It's a comforting picture lol
Seeing Streeter Seidell was a huge surprise! Was such a huge CollegeHumor fan back in the day, and I knew he worked for the show, but man. Glad to see he's still there and killing it! Was one of my favorites from the golden era of that channel.
These last 18 months have been surreal, crazy at times. I've been watching from the UK during lockdown and these crazy bunch of talented people kept my spirits up. The Iceberg sketch is one of the funniest I've ever seen. Definitely a highlight. So all I got to say is: Thank you. 👏👏
Massive thank-you to everyone involved in still keeping this show going despite the circumstances. I'm forever grateful for the lightheartedness and laughter this show has provided us, even during the worst of times. 💜
I am in my 40s. This cast is the best I’ve ever seen in my life. By far my favorite. To me they’re the best ever but I don’t want to argue with anyone. Such a great ensemble and combination of talents. I know Hollywood will come calling and the cast have dreams of their own and stuff, but I hope they stay together a few more years. And can’t forget to mention that a big part of it is the production values. The world is ending, don’t go chasing waterfalls.
I totally agree! I think Lorne giving the actors much more flexibility to miss episodes in order for them to pursue other opportunities has made a world of difference!
"We had each other. And so, even though people were six feet apart, they were as close as they've ever been, and I think you just saw the best in everyone," Loren Michaels (23:06). Beautiful!
When SNL came back it really helped me get through the pandemic. It felt like a communal activity even though everyone was so isolated. Y’all had some fantastic sketches this season! Thanks for all the hard work!
I think there are so many of us, myself included, who are incredibly grateful to SNL for providing desperately needed laughter, and also a sense of normalcy throughout the insane year that was 2020. I'm not sure we'd be quite the same without it. So, thank you, sincerely, to everyone who makes SNL happen every week. Your hard work means more than you know.
If anyone from SNL reads this, please know that your efforts gave hope and sanity and relief and blessed moments of normalcy through an awful year. You were a respite from the darkness and the importance of that can never be overstated. Thank you!

I struggled with crippling depression during lockdown to the point of almost giving up (glad I didn’t) they gave me so much joy that watching SNL was the highlight of my week, I thank them for helping me get through it and reminding me dark times are temporary. god bless their hearts!
I got thur depression by NOT watching them.
@Rosalyn A, Glad you're with us, friend! I'm glad SNL brought you some much needed laughs. Know that I'm rooting for you. ♥️
~ You are a beautiful being & we all must remember we have so much left to offer the world (even when it feels as if it is crashing down around us... or perhaps in SPITE of it!) 🥰
If SNL is not on I see what our current administration is up to for a good laugh.
Cecily's giving her mask to Aidy is one of the most precious moments of this film 😭
I missed that til Aidy brought it up. It was selfless.
Like, here's my dirt mask put ur spit in it.
They talk about how scared they were but share a mask? Masks don't work. Never have. The hypocrisy is undeniable
I don't want to argue whether masks help or not. I believe that it has been wiser to wear them like doctors have been ordering all the time. 🤷🏼♀️
I really liked Cecily's gesture, though.
She nails every character she does. I absolutely adore her! That wine flinging on Jost 😂😂😂 that was just awesome. She's amazing!
It was all worth it for the handful of outstanding Bowen Yang moments.
He's the best
@@davidhalcon5594 Are so, funny. It's ok to disagree.
Jim Carrey as Biden gave me probably the hardest laughs I've ever had for an SNL bit. Loved it so much.
then again the notion Joe has anything in common with Clint Eastwood is ridiculous.
He was nothing like Biden
As someone who worked on the front lines during the pandemic, SNL was a big thing that got me by (and it has always been a show I enjoyed, in both good and bad times) but to know how carefully they did everything and managed to bring something so important (art, relief, joy, laughter) to people in my field made me swell with pride and respect in the sense that they considered the safety of others while doing so. Thank you, SNL.
I guess it took a pandemic for everyone to realize how well-run SNL is.
Well run? Definitely.
Funny? Nope.
Exactly. I hadn't watched it the same night it came out since like 1996
I mean 2020 was a ghost town.
The fact that they had to still do costume changes in the same amount of time with only one person for costume/makeup is NOT giving enough credit to how they were able to pull it off without the audience noticing a difference is PHENOMENAL
True!
Oh please. It's probably a lie.
Especially if you've seen the normal hair and makeup episode it's stressful enough with all those ppl
"Loco" was such a mood, though.

I loved it 😍❤♥💕💖

I often read SNL reviews on the AV Club and this season they were pretty middling to OK, but I think that if the reviewer were to watch this doc they would seriously reconsider the grades they had been giving. I cannot begin to fathom the insanity of what they pulled off, truly impressive and commendable.
Yes, indeed. I don't care about reviews or critics, anyway.

People like to bag on SNL these days, but its obvious they put in a ton of work and are passionate about what they do. Let them do their thing; comedy is a spectrum and doesn't have to be at full genius levels to please everyone. And if some people love it, let them love it.
