Ashley Graham may suck, but she does have SOME sense of self preservation. If you aim at her, she'll duck to get out of the line of fire. Tell her to hide, she'll do just that, and when you play as her during a brief segment, you can actually fight off enemies by throwing lamps at them. She also spots a boulder for you that you can use to knock onto one of the el gigante's heads. Gets herself kidnapped a lot but she DOES have some level of competence.
Also the knight's armor you can unlock for her after beating the game a few times is fantastic, she can't get carried off anymore, and any enemy that tries just falls over helplessly

She doesn't even belong on this list frankly, I've seen plenty of escort characters who tried to defend themselves and were worse for it because they actually just made me have to jump in and very carefully and quickly kill everyone around them before they were killed in retaliation, sometimes not fighting and just being a distraction like Ashley is, is more helpful.
Actually, the sniper mission that involves defending an oblivious fat guy looks like a lot of fun. It reminds me of Skyrim, when you shoot people with arrows and hide from them.

It reminds me a lot defending Earnest from the jocks with your slingshot while he's giving his class president campaign speech in Bully.
+Jesse Clark It is actually rather fun. The entire game is pretty fantastic.
Helps too that you can choose to make it easier for yourself as well before the mission starts, by agreeing to your boss' offer to call out where the snipers are coming from, so you won't miss them.

Ellie is invisible to the enemies and she doesn't help you.
Juan Martín If you are grappled she will stab the enemy and you are spotted she will throw a brick at the enemy.
If a gunfight breaks out she will shoot. But she does all these things rarely to increase the difficulty and it may be that the higher the difficulty setting, the less likely AI companions will intervene.

Can we all agree a lot of FPS games have awful companions but then there's Bioshock Infinite. I loved Elizabeth because she wasn't useless and that's a hard thing to find in companions

It's not hard to make a companion not useless, you just make it so they're magically and unrealistically unaffected by all the combat happening around them. Then hope that there are enough hypocrite consumers who will call it a good system while bashing other games with exactly the same system.
+CrashSable Things to make a companion good=doesn't die or doesn't feel pain, has good commentary on the side, gives the player weapons, health and/or ammo, and doesn't block you when you try to get through a door...
Najee M and pretty much every example of a companion succeeding at all of the above is because of an immersion breaking game design. Elizabeth and Ellie are just ignored by the enemies. The "good" Skyrim companions are just considered such because they are near enough invincible. The companions in MGSV are only acknowledged by the rest of the game when you explicitly order them to interact with it somehow and spend the rest of their time as far away from you as possible without completely abandoning you etc.
+Electrifyyy Alyx Vance from Half-Life 2 was pretty good. She would always dispose of the other zombies, combine, headcrabs, you name it, whenever I'm trying to get an achievement for lighting 15 zombies on fire. She only ever died on me once out of, I dunno, seven playthroughs.
Literally every Survivor in Dead Rising games.
Unless you get eight at a time and arm them all with Assault Rifles and LMGs, then your multiple bags of fragile living experience points becomes an Anti-Psychopath army.

not a companion, but the Druffalo from Dragon Age Inquisition that you have to herd back to its home.... damned thing moves so slow.

It is, however, invincible. You can actually use her as a back up tank on that really annoying rift if you go around the back way or run past it to get to her.

She doesn't need self-preservation. Her charm and likability deflects bullets.

Andy's "Leon" scream is wonderful. You should find a way to include it in a clip of character impersonations made by the team.
I wouldn't say Ashley Graham lacked self-preservation. It's more like she was a weak teenager with no idea how to defend herself.

No One Lives Forever is probably one of my favorite games. Such simplicity, but yet has a nice story, nice gameplay that's challenging (somewhat) and a quirky, comic vibe. Liked the second one too. Kinda wish they had more out.

Licensing issues. Warner own the rights but can't be bothered to let Night Dive Studios remake it apparently. For what it's worth, if you can eBay a copy it runs just fine on Windows 10 in compatibility mode.

No one lives forever was a brilliant game, exceeding the quality of most other shooters of that time. I am deeply saddened by the fact that it's relatively unknown.

Where's Captain Keyes from Halo: Combat Evolved, as soon as you rescue him from the brig in the Truth and Reconciliation he runs up to the first enemy he kills to unload them with rounds from a needler... the alien weapon with ammo which explodes if enough rounds are fired at the same thing. Also he can't tell the difference between a dead body and a grenade.

Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite was a perfect example of how do to escort characters. So there is now no excuse for characters like this.

Great Video. When I played Goldeneye I usually cleared the base of enemies before freeing Natalie since her self-preservation skills was severe lacking.

Just shows that escort missions are never fun. So many times in games i've had to escort a brain dead A.I character who is actively trying to take a bullet to the head or you lose track of them only to find them running in to a wall so you have to reload a checkpoint.

I really don't think Ashley was as terrible of an AI companion as everyone makes her out to be. All you really ever had to do was keep the enemies in front of you and her behind you
What is everyone's beef with Ashley? Buring my first playthrough of Resident Evil 4 Ashley got carried away resulting game over only twice and both times I blamed for myself getting careless. She always stays behind Leon when shooting and even crouches if Leon is aiming to her direction. Plus you can hide her to the trash bins and make her wait in a safe distance. Are people just ignoring these commands entirely?

Ashley, as dense as she was, I would still have rather had her in RE5 than Sheva, just dear god Sheva. When I'm running away from my own AI companion with more fear than the enemy NPC's, something is wrong.

This is probably the first, recent N.O.L.F related video that I have seen in quite some time.
Although the whole mission was a joke, I want to say, thank you for including it.
Hopefully, this game license is released from copyright limbo before I am an old man.
Ashley ducks out of the way when you aim near her, she'll stay by your side until you tell her where to stay or hide, she operates a big old truck to destroy doors, she alerts you to a giant rock to use on an El Gigante, can reach places Leon can't, can operate switches so Leon can focus on killing the enemies, and is able to solve puzzles and kill some enemies on her segment, but she's a 20 year old woman with no self defense training, but she has plenty of self preservation, she just can't do much to defend herself from the Ganados, it's not like she grew up as the daughter of the president, at most her father was president for eight years by the time RE4 takes place, six of which were in between racoon city and when she was kidnapped by Krauser.
Where was Lydia in this list?

Captain Miller from metro 2033. The man can clearly see that there are still enemies in a area but does not care and moves forward. He also must still believe in Stalin's order 66 as he never retreats when the two of you are clearly out matched.
That mission was a pain on hardcore mode.

Ashley is actually probably the best escort quest in all of video games.
She's actually a factor in gameplay (unlike The Last of Us and Bioshock Infinite), but it's impossible to accidentally shoot her (when she's not over a cultist's shoulder) because she ducks when you pull out your gun and gets behind you when she can. Also, you can put her in a bin, clear out all the baddies, then come back for her later.
Your friend in minecraft who does not know how to play and you spend the whole sit in telling them how to do stuff and end up killing yourself because you are so board

You're doing it wrong. You just leave them to their own devices while you do all the work, lol. It allows them to figure out a lot of it on their own, and you can just answer any questions they have. Of course, if you see them doing something stupid like using a pickaxe on dirt, feel free to correct them.
This one person invited me to their realm. I taught them the best technique for mining diamonds: Y level 11, dog a one block wide tunnel leaving a two block space between each tunnel. He left one space. Sorry but, learn some Minecraft already

I never thought Ashley was that bad of an escortee. She actually has the sense to either get behind you or duck and cover when you start shooting, and most of the time when she gets grabbed it's because the level designers came up with another way to separate the two of you (though at least they eventually provide dumpsters for her to hide in until the firefight's over.)

i remember that being the first mission out side the training in no one lives forever. i played that game back in the day and i was like 7 and didn't know what to do. never got past that mission

Great stuff in this video as usual :D But i think you should do a list of all the good companions in games :D for example Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite :D and BTW you forgot Joe from Mafia 2.... that constantly-drunk idiot is somehow dying all the bloody time :D
I never had that problem with Natalya on my playthroughs. She was almost invincible against enemy bullets, so whenever she wandered between me and the enemy soldiers I was like "Cover me!" and side-stepped behind her to shoot them. She was like a moving shield for me.
And I need to slip "undead conga-line" in to conversations more often.
Sydney from FO3, not technically a companion, I think, but can help you in one mission, where she will die almost instantly. Of course if you want her to live you can clear out all of the supermutants and traps first by going in through the back door, but that kind of defeats the purpose.
Really? Ashley in RE 4? I'd put her near if not at the very top of best video games escorts ever. Barring something like 2 instances in the game, you can have hang back somewhere safe, stick right behind you where the bullets aren't happening or just go hide in a dumpster while you murder all the things.
She's even smart enough to duck when you point a weapon at her. And if that's somehow not enough in a new game+ you an put her in a suit of armor that makes her immune to all damage and too heavy for the Ganados to carry off. I never use the armor because the clanking she makes with every step would drive me loony in 5 minutes but it makes her a damn good zombie distraction for people who can somehow stand all the noise.
I like how at the end, the objective box is a font used in Saints row and the health bars from Vice City
I'm gonna throwback to Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, and give a shoutout to Farah. Her and her bow. Shoots the Prince at the most inopportune times, stands in the middle of the battlefield shooting her bow instead of finding someplace safe to snipe from.
Hello outside Xbox I just got finished playing the first level of resident evil two revelations and it had way more jump scares then anything I've ever played so I really encourage you to look into that game. I swear I almost peed myself about four times.
I actually enjoyed that NOLF mission. You enjoy a game more when you start out with a sniper rifle ;-) Plus it was fun to see how many headshots you could get in that turkey shoot.
I'm gonna quote Michael from Achievement Hunter here. Ashley's great. If she gets kidnapped, it's because you, the highly-trained antimonster specialist, has decided to leave the teenage girl unattended in a monster infested hellhole.
Also, a bug lets her suplex cultists in that little section where she's playable.

Mayu from Fatal Frame/Project Zero II - loved to not only stand around and get attacked, but stand around in such a way so you couldn't actually get the ghost with your camera and save her. Not to mention the fact that the whole game is her basically running off and you having to go save her - the whole game!

You know what else could have made this list.... horses in Skyrim. Way too many times have I walked out of a city to see my trusty steed battling a dragon.... by himself... half a mile away....
another one from vice city - the bank heist. the MOST DIFFICULT PART of it was, when you drive to the bank, stop your cab on the other side of the road, and HAVE TO WALK THOSE NITWITS ACROSS A 4 LANE ROAD! man, how many times did i have to repeat this mission just because of them getting run over...

Eileen Galvin from _Silent Hill 4: The Room_. She *literally* walks to her death in this game if you don't save her in time, and before then, if you give her a too long-range weapon, she'll throw herself into combat often and get possessed more quickly as she takes more damage. The higher the possession, the faster she shuffles to the gyroscopic, blood-soaked Death Machine.
I recently played Dead Rising 1 again and was reminded of the incredible stress involved with ecorting survivors back to the security room. Every 5 seconds "Frank!! Frank!!". (Sigh) If I didn't need the PP .............................
I nominate Emma Emmerich (MGS 2) and Eva (MGS 3)
Emma was the bane of my existence with her inability to swim or walk. And that sniper part! Gah, especially trying it with the PSG 1-T...
And we can't forget Eva with her inability to run, her insatiable hunger, and her proclivity toward getting caught while going prone.
The one I had trouble with was Lian Xing in Syphon Filter 2. There is a mission where you have to rescue her and she has no armor and has a small pistol. Instead of staying behind Logan, she just walks out into the fire fight like nothing is wrong. Then, when she tries to help, she couldn't hit the moon at point blank range.

Watching this makes me appreciate Elizabeth from Bioshock infinite a heck of a lot more.
I always use the Special 2 outfit while playing Resident Evil 4 so I don't have to worry about Ashley. That outfit choice puts her in knights armor which means she can't be killed or carried away.
I've watched like 5 episodes today, I think I overdosed.
I imagine the depleting health bar as the character, sitting perfectly still, stabbing him/her self with a knife until you are within range. Then they Patch themselves up afterwards....
