With the Series S, I think it's mostly going to come down to how much effort the developer puts into it. We've already seen some say they won't have ray tracing on Series S and others can make it work. Target may be 1440p, but resolutions are going to be all over the place, again, depending on the developer. All of the hardware cutbacks are to be expected if not targeting 4k just from how much more information has to be processed for 4k textures. At least having an equivalent CPU architecture and SSD, game design won't have to be compromised even though visuals will be compromised. For someone like me who never ponied up for the latest gen PC components and typically built my PCs with components that were a year or two old, a Series S follows a lot of the same philosophy. If you just want to be able to play everything and don't care about the highest settings or framerates possible, the Series S is a good value.

    • @OneLastScholar
      @OneLastScholar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Exactly. I got mine for €250, it is a steal. Hopefully devs won't be forced by execs to ignore the Series S and its power; it can definitively run any game at 60 FPS as long as there is some tune-down on graphics, but some companies like CD Projekt RED just lazily copy-pastes the Series X version, lowers resolution and locks the game to the 30 FPS it was always capable of doing.

Granted, you won't be able to play them from it and you need to move them back to the internal SSD if you ever wanted to play them but it's still a good thing that it's possible so you don't absolutely have to delete games if you're running out of storage (which you definitely will)

      @sEaNoYeAh 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Sendit Sunday being able to change batteries is good, it's a pro consumer, convenient move. Probably should come with a play and charge kit, but the ability to use regular batteries, any rechargeable batteries or recharge packs is better than a built in battery that's difficult to change or not intended for the average user to change replace at all.
It's something that's annoyed me about Sony's controller practices, the average user just assumes they need a new controller when battery life becomes inconvenient, which DS4 could be prone to doing. Hopefully DualSense is better, I haven't seen any mention of battery life yet but I'd assume they've learned from their mistakes, and the new features presumably would practically necessitate a better battery anyway.

I'm 1 week into owning a Series S and I've no regrets whatsoever. My biggest concern was storage but I've got 15 games installed (only a handful of which are Indie titles) and that's more than enough to keep me busy for a few months.
I've no doubt that in time I'll need more storage, and on paper the PS5 digital looks like a better investment, but the key difference is Game Pass Ultimate. Having taken advantage of the promo deal I've got access to all of those titles for £40 a year, at the moment I don't think Sony can compete with that.

I was planning to get the X, but eventually settled for the S while i wait for my PS5 to be delivered in early 2021. So far, the experience has been overwhelmingly pleasant. Sure, already I can tell the storage is going to be an issue - But since my gaming habits usually consists of playing the shit out of one game until im done with it and never playing it again - Its not that big of a deal.
Gamepass is - surprise - what sold it. Being able to have more games than I can play availible to me is nothing short of amazing. Sure, this is more a testament to the Gamepass service and would have been the same on the X, but since im currently on a 1080p TV the extra 200USD was to much of a hard sell.
Since i was on PS4 the last gen, i have heaps of excellent games to play for - realistically - years to come, and I am still able to play any new games coming out for this gen when i want. Since i have not been on gamepass before, taking advantage of Microsofts "Convert Live Gold to Game Pass Ultimate"-deal has gotten me three years of game pass for less than the price of two new AAA titles...
Sure, an X with a 4K TV would undoubtedly be a better experience - But would it be worth it for me with a 1080p-display...? Sure, futureproofing and all that, but It wont be the end of the world if i "need" to get an X in a year or so - Then the S will be perfect for the kids.
In conclusion: Series S with game pass = Match made in heaven, especially of youre on an 1080p display. This will sell heaps of consoles for Microsoft.

In my opinion, these are the reasons to get either one (since i have both)
    Xbox Series X
    - More Power/Better Performance
    - Better Image Quality
    - Blu-Ray Disc Drive
    - 1TB SSD
    Xbox Series S
    - Smaller Size (easier to fit in small spaces like a bedroom)
    - $200 Cheaper
    - While performance is worse, it’s serviceable at up to 1440p 120fps
    - Easy to take with you anywhere, like on a trip to a hotel or friend’s house
I’d say if you have the money and the space for it, get the Series X, no brainer. But if you’re on a budget, don’t have much space, or both, get the Series S. Also if you have a TV that can’t display 4K, 1440p isn’t that much of a sacrifice. My bedroom TV supports up to 1080p maximum, so my Series S does 1080p 120fps, and it actually still looks fine. Especially since the TV isn’t tiny, but it’s much smaller than my living room’s 4K TV. But yeah, i’d still get the Series X if you can, no matter how impressive the Series S is.

Series S is the perfect starter Xbox. Whether you want to save, you can always trade up at GameStop toward a new Series X in the future; or just don't have a 4K TV yet, or you just want to casually game and use streaming apps. It's literally bang for your buck. Xbox Game Pass will grow with each sale of these no doubt.

The irony here is that engines have been developed to rely heavily on the GPU over the CPU since 2013 and because of that, the Series S is suffering. Now that developers can rely on the CPU for heavy lifting again, I’m sure games will continue to improve in their favorable comparability to the Series X as time passes and engines adapt, but early on the flaws of previous gen is poisoning the potential of the series s at launch.

After taking a course in electric materials: Thermal imaging isn't as easy as you make it seem. It doesn't show the temperature of the object, just the heat that is expelled in the infrared spectrum. Some materials radiate more, some less, some don't radiate at all in the infrared spectrum. Unless you coated all the surfaces for maximum thermal radiation your reading are not comparable. Just so you know.

    • @gingersnaps6941

How fast does a PC need to be to match Series S performance in games with and without RT? And how much would it cost (with SSD and controller)? Are there even any games available for it? Does Series S need "exclusive titles" or does it provide an even more broadly use case scenario. And maybe you could add in some (legal) emulation option, if you want.
Series S: overhyped or underrated? What's your verdict DF?
    Grüße aus Berlin

Here in brazil, the difference in price from the series s to the ps5 all digital (the closest priced console) its about 250-300$, not only that, but because our money is so devalued, the series x and ps5 cost 900$, even though the minimum wage is under 250$, so to me, the series s is actually a pretty good deal

They should have given us 2TB of storage with Series S. It's a digital only console! That's my only gripe.

2TB of SSD storage is definitely gonna eat up more than $300. unrealistic for that price.
To give you a perspective. the cheapest 2TB SSD on the market right now is around ~$220. The most expensive one is ~$400. how the hell can they fit those in a $300 margin? If they raised the price to $400 or so then there is no reason to get the Series S anymore. Microsoft has a lot of money, but it is still unrealistic to expect them to eat up so much loss per console.
Same can be said even for the Series X/PS5. People complain that 1TB of storage is not enough, but keep forgetting that a proprietary SSD is expensive af. They have to keep the consoles under $500 with such storage while still delivering 4K capable hardware, which means selling at a huge loss per console.

I can take the lower resolution.
I'll even except a couple of settings being slightly lower.
    But...
I can't take 30fps games that are being played at 60fps on Series X.
If 30fps vs 60fps is the trend difference, That a massive false advertising from Microsoft.

@@GregorySnipe bullshit man it’s all about frame rate when we’re talking about Next Gen Consoles as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is incredible on Series X but that’s only because of the 60fps because without it you’re limited to 30fps of which literally kills all the greatness of the Game because it’s superb with 60fps but 30fps feels terrible, and there’s no excuse for 1440p 30fps on S when they couldn’t gone with a lower resolution 1080p 60fps performance mode, and while it’s not all about frame rate that was last Gen but this brand New Gen there’s no excuse for 30fps only anymore as every single game should have at least an optional 60fps performance mode period ......
30fps is the reason I ain’t playing watch dogs legion as I refuse to play any game which is 30fps only as there’s no excuse anymore with these New consoles having custom Ryzen 3700x based CPU’s as every single game can definitely run 60fps as long as the devs aren’t lazy, and actually put the effort into optimizing their game’s with optional performance modes !

I agree about the advertising, but this should be common sense. There is no ‘4k machine’ or ‘60 fps machine’. The hardware has a certain amount of power behind it, and its up to the developer to leverage that however they want. So not everything will be 4k 60 on series x, nor will it be 1440p 60 on the s.

I agree. I just wonder if it has anything to do with the fact developers hasn't received the final dev kits. Also the developers are still trying to learn the new rdna2. Next year or two we will see if ms lied.

Thanks for the great review, I always enjoy watching your well-structured and informative videos. One thing I would like to address is your assumption that the PS5 digital edition will likely be produced in lower quantities than the disc drive edition. I personally don't think that will be the case, because Sony has a huge interest in getting customers to buy the digital edition and thus making them dependent on the Playstation Store. The revenue from game sales will not only make up for the losses from the hardware sales but also generate more profit for them in the long run than if they'd push for physical game availability. The rather big price difference of $100 between the digital and the disc version also speaks for Sony pushing for a closed digital games market, as this difference clearly can't be justified just by the omission of the disc drive which doesn't make up such a big part of the overall production cost.
