I was so curious how the Opera would turn out and I could not imagine ANYTHING better than this, I was grinning like a lunatic at the sheer gall and brilliance of it. Well done to all of you.
I really must admit that in terms of the arrangement itself this piece is really rather genius. The way the section which goes with “Blood is on your hands” is integrated with rock in particular is nothing short of inspired. I have mixed feelings about the lyrics though. Not because they’re badly written, but because it tries so hard to become it’s own homage to Romeo and Juliet that it kind of forgets what the sequence meant in the context of the game. Romeo and Juliet used cliché love tropes to serve a greater purpose and to comment on young love (as well as many other things) while Draco and Maria was a simple love story in and of itself. Look at the Impresario. He’s so OTT and pretentious that it’s only natural he’d (or… whoever wrote the piece in the game) write something as clichéd as The Dream Oath. The reason this part of the game works so well though is because of Celes’ involvement in the performance and how it contributes to her character arc. However, seeing as this is a retelling of what the in-game composer himself intended (given the title) then we can safely ignore what happened in the game (Ultros appeared and was generally a dick) and take the story on it’s own terms. And the above rock interpretation differentiates so much from the original text that I really do struggle what to make of it. Does it mean that Kaufman and Pedrini thought The Dream Oath was Uematsu’s own version of Romeo and Juliet? Did they believe the original piece would be improved by making it more like Shakespeare? Perhaps, you may very well sensibly suggest, they did what they did because they thought it’d make for a pretty cool sounding song. Which I very much admit it is.
This is a piece of art, not only a damned good mixture of the best of two worlds, but its more enganging than even their orginals, my hats off to Jake & Tommy for this master piece, and i do look forward to their next piece.
Yo this really rules, thanks Wools for pointing me this way! It took me like 4 minutes not to think that this was some weird orchestral metal version of West Side Story songs
I freaking love this track. It's amazing. I'm normally more of a VII fan than VI, but this is just awesome. (The Opera was always my favorite part of VI to begin with.)
I love this rendition, though making the Opera sequence like Romeo and Juliet instead of what actually happens in the game was an odd decision. There was no "forbidden love" between Maria and Draco, the only reason she couldn't be with him was because the East and West were at war and Ralse forces her hand in marriage when her castle falls. Either way, those decisions lead to possibly the best remixes I've ever heard in my life so I'm happy with it. I've got the whole Balance and Ruin album and this track is probably my favourite just ahead of Snappleman, Norg, and Captain Finbeard's battle theme.
Macho Pony Yes, but it's not the plot of the Opera. Draco and Maria are on the same side, they would have had no issues with being together if she wasn't being forced to marry Ralse while Draco was out fighting.
The arrangement isn't required to interpret the actual events of the game. In this case, he decided to take the approach of Rome and Juliet / West Side Story, perhaps because it fit the Queen homage better.
What I imagine for the opening and ending scenes: Opening Scene Draco is at the top of the same tower he and Maria were dancing on. He is sitting on one of the walls at the edge. Tears are streaking down his mournful, regretful face, as he stares at the center of the floor. Brief memories of his and Maria's time together flicker in his mind. Then the flashback after the flashback completes ending scene Draco is still in the exact same place and position. He hears the guards coming up the tower. He stands up on the wall, and turns to face the sky. He sees a faint visage of Maria's face in the sky. Just as the guards open the trap door and begin to gather on the top of the tower, Draco jumps off, and plummets to his death.
And I must say, I absolutely love the "I'll kill them" part. He belts it out like it's a man clutching his sword as he's surrounded. Like he knows they're on their way, and he's not letting them tear them apart.
I was looking for other Jake Kaufman works, stumbled upon an interview between him and the Completionist, and wound up here. Totally worth it!! Edit: Even if though I've washed my hands of the Completionist, this was still worth the experience.
Want to be even more amazed? The [piano intro] that starts the overture/Celes' theme? That's the "wrong" lyrics that you sing to screw up the song... ...which could mean it's Draco's part, and she simply sang the wrong lines!
1:16 - This part is the best!
3:43 - Wait, this part is the best!
7:16 - Ok, this is the best part!
Fuck it, it's all good.
Thats virt for ya

Macho Pony Yes, but it's not the plot of the Opera. Draco and Maria are on the same side, they would have had no issues with being together if she wasn't being forced to marry Ralse while Draco was out fighting.
oh sorry its been awhile since i played FFVI and it seemed from the way you described it like they were on opposite sides.
Macho Pony Yeah, I realized I had typed it rather ambiguously, my bad lol.
The arrangement isn't required to interpret the actual events of the game. In this case, he decided to take the approach of Rome and Juliet / West Side Story, perhaps because it fit the Queen homage better.
THE TEARS FLOW WHILE I SING THESE POWER CHORDS~!
What I imagine for the opening and ending scenes:
Opening Scene
Draco is at the top of the same tower he and Maria were dancing on. He is sitting on one of the walls at the edge. Tears are streaking down his mournful, regretful face, as he stares at the center of the floor. Brief memories of his and Maria's time together flicker in his mind.
Then the flashback
after the flashback completes
ending scene
Draco is still in the exact same place and position.
Wish this was on Spotify it’s so great
It's levels of dedication to this song that makes me wonder, if this is great I wonder how great the game actually is?
Jason Paradise lead me here
probably the best remix of all time
Although it's a FF remix, this would totally fit with Queen.
This cover is so good, it makes me wonder what I’m doing with my life.
I just can't stop singing this, in the shower, on the way to work, at work. This song is amazingly addictive.... My favorite OCRemix song ever
I was looking for other Jake Kaufman works, stumbled upon an interview between him and the Completionist, and wound up here. Totally worth it!!
Edit: Even if though I've washed my hands of the Completionist, this was still worth the experience.
This is by far the best track from this album. Nothing else even comes close.
I’m angry it took me six years to find this song. It’s so good.
goosebumps and tears... wow.
Want to be even more amazed?
The [piano intro] that starts the overture/Celes' theme? That's the "wrong" lyrics that you sing to screw up the song...
...which could mean it's Draco's part, and she simply sang the wrong lines!
Same :)
I only encountered this recently. I listened to it once and thought it was okay; then I gave it a second listen and really fell in love with it.
Amazing. Truly, amazing. Just downloaded it and heard it like a million times.
God dammit it's been 4 years
God dammit it's been 7 years
Fuuuuuuuuu! I love how this reminds me of Queen!
lol!! I thought so too
right from the start
¿Les gusta Queen? ¿Les gusta Final Fantasy VI? Esta canción sin duda alguna les va a encantar, toda una obra maestra.
I don't even have to speak your language to understand what you're saying!
No, it's not that lame band.
A masterpiece, simply, the best remix of a video game theme ever.
I love this mostly for the excessively descriptive lyrics about murder. XD
