That last story, it doesn't matter if "they're just toys" or not. The guy should NOT have taken them in the first place.

He would have been sitting in jail, I wouldn't have been nice. You take my collection, no matter WHY I have that collection, it's mine. And I will press charges. And take custody. She had to know he had those, so ex isn't innocent in this either and I'm quite sure he bragged about ripping off her ex. I owned a comic shop, i have a comic collection and a huge book collection. And if my stuff went missing, I would not only know, I would be owning the person who did it, even if it was my ex. Nope, thieves get to sit it in jail and I get the stuff back. And if he' has messed up the stuff, he gets the summary judgement for replacement. $20k is nothing to sneeze at, it's a felony.

There are people who refuse to believe that something "made for kids" could ever be valuable. If you show them how much a certain thing is going for, they refuse to believe it. "No one in their right mind would pay that much for an old toy!"

People often see "toys" and forget that people put money into these items to collect and own
I've collected stereographic images/viewers for 40+ years and still have people see some of the modern viewers (view master units) and want to know why I collect "toys"
I simply tell them that I have images and viewers that are nearly 180 years old and when I started adding viewmaster units I bought a couple cheap units that people could use to see some of the view master reels I had along with a couple modern stereo viewers for sane reason

Story 4 - It doesn't matter what the item is, it if it's worth money and can be sold for that money that's a crime. There are many things I don't think are worth it but it's still theft and a crime. To brazenly do so on camera is dumb as a sack of rocks.

Right! My husband recently came across some old McDonalds toys my Grandma collected for me still in the plastic and asked if they are worth anything? (he was going to give then to the kids if not) I said "IDK?" One Google search later and I find out the full set of 8 that I have can go for 45.00usd or more. It is not a lot but even the right MCD Toys can gain value! I'm glad he asked before just ripping them open! LOL

Yes, it is. Comics ever more so, and that's coming from an avid comic reader.
You're not even reading it, you just leave it there in its sealed package as if it could spoil.
For all you know, it's not even a comic. Just a cover with some blank pages inbetween, because again, you've never actually opened it and never will.
Sorry if this sounds a bit hostile, it's not really supposed to be an attack or anything, just rambling, I mean, live and let live, right? I just don't get it. I don't understand how anyone would pay good money for something they're just going to look at.

Their just coins. They can't be that valuable.
It's just a stupid comic book. I doubt anyone would buy it for more than a couple of bucks at a yard sale.
People like that would never see the true value of an old item. The comic book could be worth tens of thousands and people like this would scoff and laugh when you tell them you're taking it to an auction house to sell. They would tell you you're wasting everyone's time. No one is going to pay that kind of money for a stupid comic book. They likely wouldn't even believe you sold it for big money unless they saw the frenzy at the auction and wouldn't believe that people would pay that much.

I actually have a GOOD lawyer story.
When I was a kid my mom and dad (step dad but, whatever, he was a good man) moved us down to S FL, it was to one of the wealthiest cities in the wealthiest counties (and the US, honestly) in the early 80s. We lived in the area where the neighborhoods were of blue collar/ middle class households. Not poor but nowhere near affluent.
    We were good, though.
We'd moved from our pretty well-known and historical NE city and I was trying to deal with culture shock and being the new kid everywhere.
    Enough background.
My second year (12 years old) there was a boy (14 and from a wealthy family) who kept bullying me for anything he could think of. A real jerk. I'll call him J, for jerk and it's the initial of his first name.
I ignored what I could, called out his BS when I'd had enough, and started with my parents, trying to get my school to do something about his bullying. Nope. No help there, or with his parents.
We rode the same bus so one day he finally got physical and started pushing me, a 4 foot 11 inch, 96 pound girl around.
J was 2 years older, like '5,6" and probably 110 lbs, maybe a bit more.
I started fighting back and it turned into actual blows back and forth.
I finally lost my shizz when he slugged me, knocking me down, broke my nose, fractured the orbital bone around my eye and split my lip.
I got so enraged not just at what he was doing but there were other kids just watching this BOY beat me up. So I got up and whaled on him, totally losing control. His eyes, nose, stomach and kidneys were pummeled. I went to town on him with the way I was taught to fight by my male cousins.
I got rushed to the hospital when my mom saw me once I was able to get away and limp home all bruised, bloodied and my dress all torn up.
Then his A Hole parents had the nerve to try to sue US even though my parents called the Sheriff's office to press charges and had all kinds of pictures, statements from the ER Drs, medical records (released with parents permission),etc.
Now these people didn't know that a good friend of our family was THE highest respected/well-known/expensive/experienced lawyers in the whole of S FL, and when he found out that his "niece" was beat up, put in the hospital overnight, then the parents of my attacker had the nerve to try to sue my parents, he stepped in and took over as our Defense attorney (Pro Bono, of course).
He dug up EVERYTHING that J did in school, every meeting between the principal and each set of parents.....ALL of it. Including what really went down that day and J getting off the bus nowhere NEAR his neighborhood and beat me up until I defended myself.
He utterly destroyed those parents and their BS lawsuit. Then filed a counter suit for damages, medical bills, assault with a boatload of evidence, AND the good old favorite Pain and Suffering.
Yes we won. Yes, both my parents and I were rewarded a f-ton of money from those wealthy jerks for everything "Uncle Sean" (not his real name. Just protecting him.) sued for, and more.
    Sometimes lawyer stories are awesome.
Especially when it's a family friend looking out for us, keeping my folks from going bankrupt, and me from further abuse and court ordered community service or something to add insult to all of my injuries. 😘💖🫂🐾🐾😉👍

That first one reminded me of my late father-in-law. He was the county abstractor (title manager for property) and he discovered that there was a realtor in town who was scamming people out of their land, especially land with mineral rights. This was in Oklahoma and the county, like much of the state, is Native American population. Dad started accumulating information on the purchases and talking to the former owners. Once he had everything, he went to the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations. The guy ended up in prison for a couple of decades and the property seized and returned. It also got the attention of the governor, who hired Dad to do special investigations. That job had him rescuing a kidnapping victim, as well as investigating and getting arrests of several different county officials around the state who were taking money, bribes, and other heinous activities. They tried really hard to ruin Dad's reputation, I have a lot of the newspaper articles for the time. And, at one point, there were questions about hits being put out on Dad and the family. But, it in the end, Dad prevailed, got a commendation from the governor, and passed away in his 90s.

Story 4 has an update. Form what I remember, it went down like this: OP sued, the stepdad left the stolen sets (at least one was glued together) at his porch. The lawyer said it's the same as admission of guilt. OP's son went to live with his dad, since it was awkward at mom's place. OP won the trial (sadly only for the price of just those 2 parts of the set, not the whole 5-piece set). Sorry, I don't remember if the stepdad went to jail.

Or imagine that he stole a numbers matching 1970 Pontiac GTO, swapped out the engine and gearbox, stripped the factory paint from it, painted it in Hello Kitty themed colors, and decked out the interior in Hello Kitty colors and themes.
All of the above is similar to stealing the lego sets, taking them out of the box, and putting them together with super glue.

Highly unlikely, but because it's something they personally deem childish/unworthy they think he should just get over it and not sue his ex's thief partner. It doesn't matter what the item was, he stole tens of thousands of dollars worth of OP's property and has since destroyed it (super-glueing the pieces together). He will have to pay for his literal crime. Theft is a crime. He is a grown adult who chose to break the law, thus he has to deal with the consequences.

Ex is upset at OP and new BF but bailed BF out. Lawyer was surprised at how dumb BF was since he did it in broad daylight and in front of a kid no less. That could factor into it as well. OP did also say that BF dropped the opened sets off on OP's porch and that the value is now less than half due to that. Also that since BF broke up the sets is irrelevant since it's like stealing one baseball card out of a set and destroying it, you only get the value of that one card and the fact he returned them is an admission of guilt. The post is marked inconclusive on BORU since OP deleted their account and this was over a year ago.
