Not exactly though. They whitewashed Tyrion from the start. In the books Tywin was more reasonable because Tyrion also treated to Cercei to harm and even r*ped Tommen if she and her men would do something to “his” whore

No, no, no. No. Both competence and relationship w the boss matter. How do you not see that in this drama. Does Tywin suffer a single fool in power under him?
2:52 Love the way Tywin swallows his rage, offers Tyrion a diplomatic compromise, then lashes out at him. Says so much about their relationship. Even the way the shots are framed in this scene makes it seem like both characters are staring into a warped mirror, each seeing in the other parts of themselves which they despise.
In the books, Tyrion regretted the moment he asked for Casterly rock. And instantly regretted asking "why". The dialogue makes you think Tywin is explaining his plan for Tyrion to be named his heir. Getting a wife, etc, only for Tywin to smash him down.

Hatred? Such cold clear.disdain can't possibly be for the hated. But the dissapointement? That tyrion is not tywin. But worse. He is tywins father in a body that suits tywins fathers form.(in tywins mind. A jester. A clown. An imp of a man) He is tywins father remade. A reminder of everything tywin isn't without Joanna. And because of him (tyrion) he (tywin) is without Joanna. The living memory of your only joy and greatest horror both.
Yes he hated him but not just for being a dwarf. I genuinely think he could have got over that. What must annoyed him I feel was he was a rebel, never wanted to do what his father said. He partied hard and enjoyed women and attention. He was known throughout the kingdoms as the half man but also as a drunk and whore lover. Which I'm sure for a man like tywin was much worse to hear than jokes about his dwarfism. Tywin could ignore jokes about his twins incest, but the drunk and whore lover with the sharp tongue most upset him. Tywin was a bad father but tyrion loved being a problem too
@X What? probably as a reward or that he also is a whore lover in secret, this suggests that one of the reasons tywin hated tyrion was because tyrion had characteristics he held and was secretly ashamed of whilst his son could do it without a care in the world
3:37 - 4:35 has got to be one of the most brutal and cruel sets of lines ever spoken on screen; you barely have time to breathe or process before he delivers the next insult. There's not even a hint of comedic relief to find here, just pure and uninterrupted verbal annihilation, and so beautifully delivered by Charles Dance.
It's tough love. I don't think he actually hated Tyrion, he was just tired of Tyrion's BS. Wasting the crown's money on getting drunk with strangers, and sleeping with random women in Brothels instead of making a name for himself and helping Twyin's legacy and family name. He was just disappointed, and angry at Tyrion's actions. He still loved him though.
@@thamayor6324 I still don't think Twyin hated Tyrion in the show (never read the books so not sure how he was treated) but in the show it seemed like Twyin was more frustrated and disappointed in Tyrion but still loved him. @@Zybezane I've read the books and I'm sure of two things. One Tyrion is not his son. Two tywin hated that he killed his wife and that he does EVERYTHING to disgusting excess.
It's ironic as Tywin was obsessed with family legacy and the bloodline moving on but the only way the bloodline moves on now is through Tyrion, who he hated the most
I think the conversation was good at the beginning of the show, because they have true conversation. After season 4, the dialogue seem like combat of who have the most fine word, who have the last word... (I don't know if it's the correct explanation in english, so in french I will say "un duel de répartie, un duel de bons mots" )
Tywin was a smart man - one of the smartest in all Westeros. Unfortunately, he couldn't get past his hate and shame for Tyrion, even when he recognized how capable Tyrion was. As a real team, they would have been virtually unstoppable.
The thing I love about this show is that characters face the consequences of their OWN actions, rather than their enemy's. It wasn't betrayal of his own king or the cruelty of the red wedding that killed him. It was being a hypocrite to himself by believing "family is everything" yet hating Tyrion that killed him.
Tywin is a real tragic shakespearian protagonist. He was one of the strongest lords of his time and laid great foundations for his family's future. And then his wife died and the grief changed him and then turned into hatred against the son his wife died trying to bring into the world, which ultimately leads to his doom at the hands of the child he never loved, ironically the most promising of the three and the best-suited to take the family name.
@@TyTimeIsAwesome maybe, maybe Robb just wouldn't have been alive because they would always scheme against him and kill him somehow. I love the way Tyrion is so hurt he doesn’t even wait for Tywin to finish before he turns and finishes walking away. Such a moving scene, damn near moves me to tears.
Jeremy Terkelsen That made the scene for me. This is such a real depiction of a father’s contempt for his son and the son’s powerlessness in the presence of his father that it’s painful to watch.
Opamigaaa It’s because he turns away *during* Tywin’s last remark instead of afterwards that makes it realistic, not the fact that he just turned away.
to be fair... Tyrion DID bring a whore the the capital right after Tywin told him not to, he got the justification for his hatred even more because Tyrion fucked up.

That was the most cruel, cold-hearted and sadistic statement to throw into the face of your own son. Completely barren of all emotions, but resentment.
i think the scene where he sentences him to death or the scene where he tells tyrion of the last time he did something for the family not himself where at least as cruel and cold hearted as this one
Fun fact: Charles Dance was so appalled by Tywin's treatment towards Tyrion that he kept apologizing to Peter Dinklage, between takes, for all the horrible things he told him while acting.
Dinklage kind of deserves all those horrible things said to him. He climbed the ladder as a little person in Hollywood, then pulled it up behind him so he'd be the only little person in Hollywood.

The way Tyrion asks “why?” is just genius acting. Feels like, as well as genuinely asking why, he’s questioning why his father is so relentlessly cruel and disrespectful to him, not just in this instance but his throughout his entire life
@Nogent Sounds like Dinklage captured that perfectly then. I’m reading the books now and it’s become clear how many of the genius dialogues are taken straight from them, props to the actors for some of the amazing deliveries of course but as Charles Dance said I believe, with the GOT script the actors didn’t have to try and make a “purse out of a pigs ear”
@@tastycattoast8708 I'm listening to the audiobook of AGoT and hearing many of the exact same dialogues that made the show so memorable without the special touch the actors gave them. Not that there's anything wrong with Roy Dotrice's narration, but it just doesn't have the same spark as the GoT performances, and it shows you just how much life a good actor can bring to a part.
I think he always knew the answer to “why?”, but I think it was just a natural and exhausted reaction that just slips out of him. The fact that no matter how much he tries to be in his father’s good graces he will never earn his respect and will always hold a grudge against him for killing his mother (even though it wasn’t his fault, had no control over it and didn't ask to be born, something only Jaime seems to understand) and hates him for being an embarrassment because of his dwarfism
kuledinho Lol .. Tywin is not cold at all. He is extremely prideful and he lets his emotions cloud his decisions more than some times. Roose Bolton is what you call as a cold man with no emotions whatsoever.
+Siran424 agreed tywin is a product mix of pride and coldness specially towards his children. when tywin wanted something from someone of power he becomes fairly soft tongue. roose bolton is pure coldness. no emotion no feeling. His coldness is best described in the scene where he tells his son Ramsey about his mother.
@@siran424 Dude he literally had his sons first love gang raped then made Tyrion do it last. That in its self is sick and cold beyondmeasure in itself then he wiped out two whole noble houses Women and Children had them drowned. The guy is truly a monster like a crueler medieval Augustus Caesar. Lets also not forget the murder of both the Prince and Princess ordered by Tywin during the rebellion and the cruel remarks he makes to Tyrion. Also the cluster fuck that is Cersei and Jaime can also be partially be thrown at Tywin's coldness. Guys a gifted individual but he's as cruel and cold. Closest character I can see in him is the Michael Corleone from the Godfather if Michael ever chose to murder babies and be cruel to his deformed son.
My favorite bit is right at the end: Tyrion stops and turns to hear Tywin's last remark but as soon as he hears the word "whore" leave Tywin's mouth, he immediately turns in disgust and starts walking again. The little nod Tyrion gives too like "yup, of course it's one last barb on the way out". Always loved that little touch.
The way that last line is delivered and timed with the music is absolutely amazing. It expresses so much emotion. It was already such a tense scene yet somehow that part just made it feel so much more ominous and real
It’s so beyond good how this show portrays real conversations like this. It’s like Tyrion half expected something nice but then just nodded to himself like you do when you’re getting chewed out by a parent.
And that is why Tywin hates him, everything that Tyrion is he wants for Jaimie, bit Jaimie is a weirdo who sleeps with his sister and allows her to manipulate him. Theon pretty much had the same issue, and it cost him his manhood.
I think if Joanna Lannister had lived, it would have been much different. The dwarf thing is a small issue(lol), but the death of the wife/mother is the main catalyst for Tywin and Cersei hating Tyrion so much. There were also theories that Tyrion was the son of Aerys II and not Tywin, which made a lot of sense if you read info from the books.
The acting in this scene is phenomenal. Peter Dinklage's expressions as the scene continues is a master class. From confidence, to confusion, to shame, to anger, to hatred, to emotionally checking out. The little nod he gives at the end like, "Yeah, whatever..." is just so on point. These two actors together during that time of the show, there was really nothing like it on television.
@@carloscortez6842 Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul or two of the greatest shows in modern television. But those shows are grounded in a real world mythology. There has never been a fantasy show that has equaled Game of Thrones at its zenith. Nothing with its budget; its cinematic grandeur; its effects; or its massive cast. Breaking Bad was an intimate show that focused on Walter White's exploits. The show revolved around him. Game of Thrones was an ensemble show with a slew of plotlines all going on at once. The notion that they are comparable in that respect is absurd. Game of Thrones stands alone that aspect. Game of Thrones wasn't able to do what Breaking Bad did within its wheelhouse, and Breaking Bad couldn't do what Game of Thrones did within its wheelhouse. Comparing the two would be like comparing Fellowship of the Ring with One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Both are exceptional in their own way, and both are exceptional primarily in ways the other isn't.
You forgot immense pain and hurt from the words coming out of his own father's mouth. But he'd be damned if he was going to let this cold hard loveless sonofab!tch see him cry.
That not looking at Tywin while he asks for Casterly Rock, that completely removes any need for suspension of disbelief, I really believe that Dinklage is Tyrion Lannister and acts like a person would act in that scenario. Masterclass by both actors!
The most perfect part is when Tyrion walks off at the end. He turns to listen, realises immediately that he doesn't want to hear it and walks away. I've never seen anyone do that in a show before but it happens in real life when you hate someone but have to listen to them
4:43 Never noticed it until now but as Tywin talks, Tyrion just nods midway through and continues walking, not staying or dramatically staring at his father while he speaks. He had enough of his shit, just the same thing he’s heard since birth.
EkhidnaSkiz you are basically judging his character from a 21st century point of view ( im not saying you are wrong). but going back 200-1000 years back. A very powerful lord or king wouldrarely let his dwarf son or daughter be the heir if he has other sons.
To teach me humility the gods have condemned me to watch u waddle about. The way he moves his head when he says waddle about. The disdain and half truths in his monologue are so vicious. Charles Dance is a savage.
Jerry Cregan Stark Mathurin I was referring to Tyrion killing his Mother, I think. That’s one way to look at it but a really twisted perspective. Not fair. As for what ur talking about, I don’t know. I never read the books and wasn’t that into the show.
I think this was the moment (if there was a single one) where Tyrion realized he could never mean anything to Tywin. As much as he liked jousting with his father, I think Tyrion had hope for gaining SOMETHING from him, even if just some grudging respect.
@@ispeakonlyfacts.3228 I don't know if I'd go that far. He had enough pride in his house and love for his wife to not drown Tyrion at birth, his (most likely) and the woman he loved's last son, even though he "killed" her. (Obviously not Tyrion's fault, but going off Tywin's logic.) While I think deep down, he has a grudging respect for Tyrion, it's too covered in his disappointment that it was Tyrion the dwarf that was most like him instead of Jaime or even Cersei, disappointment and embarrassment in his whoring and drinking, (which is probably some projecting and generational shame as we clearly see later that Tywin is not so above whoring as he claims and acts,) and grief turned hate for his wife to truly ever be considered love. I think Tywin is certainly capable of loving his family, as we see with him and Tommund, but there's just too much covering any possible love he may have for Tyrion to be even considered that anymore imo
Tywin didint like Tyrion. He was too obsessed with the image of house lannister. But desperate times gave in to desperate measures. He was ready to use Tyrion as long as it was necessary for the survival of the house. Once the future of the house was more or less secure, he didnt mind getting rid of him as long as the house itself was not hurt.
Tirions performance as Hand of the King did impress Tywin, at least somewhat. The problem was that due to Tirion's deformity, Tywin raised his expectations nearly to the ceiling. Tirion did cut back on whoring, limiting himself to a single courtesan, and he did cut down on drinking, and he rose to the challenge of being Hand of the King. However, Twyin probably was expecting little to no drinking, no whoring at all, and sole consumption of Tirion's time with his duties, as Tywin often is. An unrealistic expectation, honestly. Still, I'm not sure Tirion ever could have been "good enough" for Tywin.
"And I would let myself be consumed by maggots before mocking the family name by making you heir to Casterly Rock." This scene actually makes me cry lol. Tyrion really wanted his father to love him and be proud of him and treat him with respect. That's what he's really asking for in this scene, he literally proved himself in battle, as a family Tyrion and Tywin won the Battle of Blackwater together. Yet Tywin is as hateful and condescending as ever. Had Tywin been able to love and respect Tyrion their house name would have lived on like he so desperately wanted. (btw I love Tywin as a character and Charles Dance is amazing, just his character is an awful father/person)
Tywin would have probably killed for a ruthless “devote” succesor like stannis, instead of someone out the box yet unlawful and prone to mockery. For someone that creates his power structure from fear or respect he’s practically his nemesis.
Something I love about this series is just listening to the ambience of the scenes. The wine being poured into the cups, the faint animal sounds in the background, the scratching of Tywin's pen as he writes, footsteps in the stone corridors...in this world of unpleasantness, there's something so...calming about it all :)
Despite Tywin's great wisdom, his own stubborness blinded him to the fact that despite all of his whoring and joking, Tyrion is the only Lanister fit to replace Tywin. He may not have his stature, but he has proven time and again to have a wit equal to or beyond that of Tywin himselft.
i think tyrions even better because he can adapt really easy he finds out what everyone arounds him want so that he knows the players of the game and then he adapts his strategies. he would make the lannisters even more powerfull then they already are.

Even without Tywin, the show got less and less interesting as all the characters started dying. Robert, Ned, the Tyrells, they all contributed. In Season 8 there were like 5 characters left.
I felt the show went down the moment Ned Stark was killed.. everyone else who came after him, even though as good as Charles Dance, felt like just a consolation for the viewing audience. Season 8 may be the worst season, but the show has become shit by Season 2. It should have been cancelled after season 1.
I love how Tywin mentions his father (Tytos Lannister), then immediately mentions his father's father (Gerold Lannister). Tytos was hated by Tywin. Tytos used to "waddle about" being laughed at by the members of other houses, as Tytos threw his money around, spending it on wine and prostitutes, and Tywin mentions with Arya in S2 that Tytos "nearly destroyed our house and name." The exact same things that Tywin is accusing Tyrion of doing. He sees Tyrion as his Tytos, but in a body more suited to his behaviour in life. Tytos' father, Gerold Lannister, known as Gerold the Golden was, on the other hand, known to be exceptionally smart, quick-witted, and a very capable lord who massively increased the wealth of House Lannister. A man who was greatly respected by Tywin. Kind of funny how he immediately mentions "his father before him" after mentioning Tytos.
Ironically, Tyrion was not born being into drinking and whoring. He only did it as a coping mechanism against Tywin's abuse ever since he was aware of his surroundings. Tywin went on and on about the family legacy, but he's the one who ultimately led to its demise.
Gerold Lannister also supposedly murdered both his brother and his niece to get Casterly Rock. If Tywin went back any further than his own grandfather, he'd have to break the line of descent and acknowledge that "low cunning" has always been what the Lannisters are best at.
Because as trash as his grandfather and father were he still valued his last name, Lannister. He valued what it meant and hated what his recent ancestors had done to that name. But it doesn't diminish his respect for them bearing that name. Such a great character
Tyrion season 3 episode 1:I organized the defense of this city while you held court in the ruins of Harrenhal. I led the foray when the enemies were at the gate while your grandson, the king, quivered in fear behind the walls. I bled in the mud for our family. They were evil men. The Dothraki khals she burned alive? They would have done worse to her. Everywhere she goes, evil men die and we cheer her for it. And she grows more powerful and more sure that she is good and right. She believes her destiny is to build a better world for everyone. If you believed that, if you truly believed it, wouldn’t you kill whoever stood between you and paradise?"
@@darth856 The answer for that question is the difference between dany and Agon the dragon, jaehaerys the conciliator, tywin, tyrion. If you think that was good dialogue then dany was meant to be mad and if not this is the shittest thing I ever heard.
As a fun fact that might reinforce this scene. Tywin had a favorite sister, one of the few people that could make him smile after his wife died and she was also Tyrion's favorite aunt. However when she once remarked to Tywin how similar Tyrion was to him in how capable and smart he was, Tywin became so angry that he didn't spoke to her in years after that. I think this scene really captures their relationship perfectly. Also an interesting contrast that both Tywin and Tyrion had the same favorite sister/aunt showing how similar they were which was reinforced by Shae lying on Tyiwin's bed in the end. PS: I think this aunt is mentioned in the show as the "fat Lannister", the mother of the Lannister that shared a cell with Jaime.
In the books the brothel Tyrion visits has a secret passage built by a previous Hand of the King. Fan theory believes it was Tywin who would never want it to be known he goes.
Not too much in common of course, as Tyrion's favorite uncle was Gerion, who Tywin resented for his jovial nature and kindness to Tyrion. I don't recall if the book ever discusses Tywin's feelings regarding the man after his death though. Maybe he respected him somewhat for his desire to see Brightroar reclaimed, or maybe he thought him just a suicidal fool, prancing in the mists of doomed Valyria for a lost sword and a petty token of honor.
Dialogues this season were, “She is my queen” and “I don’t want it. She is my queen”. Missed such intellectual discussions that were so much a signature of the show
@@germanandres24 True but I feel like the writing for Tyrion's character is so good another actor might've been able to pull it off. Maybe not as well as Peter but still. "In reality, Charles Dance was appalled and disgusted at Lord Tywin's treatment of his son, Tyrion. He remarked that it was extremely difficult for him to mistreat a genuinely nice man like Peter Dinklage. So Charles Dance kept apologizing to Dinklage between takes." . It proves that Peter Dinklage is really a man of honor. Besides, both are great actors indeed.
Well if that's the case then Mr dance deserves some type of award for his acting abilities. Some of these English actors are just... Dance just steals every scene that he's in with his closing monologues.
Killer Joe as much as I love Dance as an actor is GoT, I don’t think we can proclaim him top 10 or deserving of so many awards like some claim until the shows he’s capable of diverse acting. He has a large body of work throughout his career and yet is only known for 1 serious role. I think a lot of mainstream actors get overlooked simply for being mainstream that are better actors overall with a lot more diversity to their craft. (Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, etc.)
I think that shows disrespect to Peter Dinklage... If you aren't a mature and sensible enough actor to understand that you're ACTING as someone and it's a script, then that just makes you look like an idiot.
Their relationship is the most interesting on the show. Tywin sees Tyrion's strategic abilities, leadership skills, and intelligence as right up there with his own, which is why he made him hand of the King, and he has deep conversations with him about running the kingdom more than any other character. Tyrion's is the only opinion other than his own that he gives any consideration to when it comes to matters of leadership. Yet the things that disgust him about Tyrion, specifically the way he chooses to live, is pretty much entirely due to Tywin never properly accepting him as his son and being disgusted by his existence.
When Tywin says "And one more thing." Tyrion stops and faces him. But as soon as he hears the word "whore" he turns and continues walking, while his father is still talking. No need to hear the rest, he knows exactly what his father is going to say and that he's dead serious about it.
I had this feeling in the last few seasons , something just didn’t feel right with the characters. Then I found out there was no more book material. D&D were only good at taking important pieces from a great book and making good scenes from that.
D&D changed a lot of the dialogue to tailor it to a more modern audience but I'm glad they didn't change Tywin's monologue. It's word for word verbatim like in the books, and it's legendary. "You ask that? You, who killed your mother to come into the world? You are an ill-made, devious, disobedient, spiteful little creature full of envy, lust, and low cunning. Men's laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine. To teach me humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father's sigil and his father's before him. But neither gods nor men shall ever compel me to let you turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse." - Storm of Swords. Chapter 4 Tyrion I
I was actually upset when tywin died. such a man didn't deserve such an embarrassment of a death especially the book version of his death and aftermath. so sad for such a legend of a character
I don't think he regretted being shitty to Tyrion. He regretted not killing him. He wasn't really surprised by the whole situation. His last thoughts were probably like: "I fucking knew it was coming. Fucking Tyrion, should have smothered him in the crib...".
Even tho its been awhile, you should never speak such words out loud, people could hear ! you. It would be blasphemous if the prophesy was spoiled by such in impotent whelp such as yourself.
*sigh*, after their last scene in season 1(where Tywin names Tyrion hand of the king) I thought there might have been some hope for these two. Then Tyrion did an amazing job as hand and I was certain Tywin would shower him with praise once he arrived at the city. Boy was I naive....
@TheKingWasty I think from this scene that Tywin hates Tyrion for being born. He made that abundantly clear. There's nothing Tyrion can do to change that.
@@GizmoMaltese Well, it would've change if Jaime died or still being captive. Only in that case, Tywin would name a Tyrion his heir, beucase it's better to swallow the insult and do that, than let your House be ruled by a minor Lannister.
The books flesh this out more. Tyrion was lying unconscious/drugged by Pycelle for weeks while he and Cersei could complain to Tywin about Tyrion being an asshole to them. And after weeks, the story sticks no matter what you say.
In the books Tywin's contempt for Tyrion makes a bit more sense as Tyrion is a far less heroic figure. He's more like Tywin with an even greater perchant for manipulating his own family. In the books Tywin's words about Tyrion being a "spiteful creature" make more sense as Tyrion is a more dastardky schemer who takes the fate of his family into his own gambles and Tywin - whome family and reputation are everything - is absolutely appalled by this.
except there is no need for his hatred on screen. this tyrion is not the tyrion in the book. so there is no understanding why he treats tyrion the way he does expect for shame and really not knowing if tyrion is his son. there were no DNA test back then. No matter how many times I watch this...this scene still gives me chills. I dont understand how D&D became so disconnected with what made this show amazing in the first place. @★ Froggie Animation ★ Yes i have. It was terrible, but i expected it to be with how awful seasons 6 and 7 were. I give the writers some slack because GRRM promised them the books would be done in time and they didn't sign up to finish the story. They don't have the skill for that
Tyrion never stood a chance. Even if he wasn't a dwarf, even if he was the epitome of virtue, Tyrion (in Tywin's eyes) killed the one woman he ever loved. That was unforgivable.
Interesting thought, he would definitely still be hated by Cersei because he killed their mother on his birth. Tywin would probably still harbor hatred for Tyrion or atleast in this initial stages of his childhood life. This hate/hatred from both his sister and father would probably lead him down the same path of whores and alcohol. Idk but his stature feels more like an accessory or add on to the fact that he killed his mother on his birth
Plus, Tywin having intercourse with Shane after she betrayed Tyrion felt more like a power move especially after Tyrion professed his love for her and Tywin being held at gun point. Even as he was being held at gun point, he didn’t care about calling Shane a whore. I remember some dialogue about a prank Tywin did to Tyrion when he was young. Tywin hired a whore to pretend to love and marry Tyrion. Both of these scenarios paint a story about Tywin never allowing Tyrion to have true love because he took his true love away from him.
Tywin was my favorite character. He was the perfect embodiment of what it meant to be a Lannister. Evil, but a shrewd tactition and a warrior in the field even in old age
@@stereoagnostic Nah Tywin is evil. The Tysha incident is proof of that. The rest of his bad actions you can argue as brutal pragmatism but there was no need for Tywin to go that far to scar Tyrion.
Tywin Lannister was such a hypocrite, presenting himself as a man of honor and respectability, all about following the law and proper etiquette, while condemning Tyrion for his hedonistic lifestyle, but in the same time engaging in an extramarital affair with Shae.
It is actually kinda funny. In the books, Tyrion uses a certain tunel said to have been built by a previous hand of the king with the intuit of having affairs with whores without it becoming public, and is very much hinted that said hand was Tywin.
Tywin's issue was never the fucking and drinking - his issue was that Tyrion *_let it be known._* It's about *_reputation._* He still would have hated Tyrion, but less so if he'd been discreet.
@@JamesJNothingIsTooSensitiveyes this! Most honor-bound societies expect people to act in a high brow way publicly, regardless of their actions behind closed doors. Tyrion, by contrast, openly enjoyed "playing the court jester," whether that be publicly dating prostitutes, pointlessly antagonizing and challenging the king, having scoundrels like Bronn at court, etc. Tyrion, by medieval standards (and by most public political standards), would rightly be seen as a personal and family embarrassment.
Tyrion rose on unsteady legs, closed his eyes for an instant as a wave of dizziness washed over him, and took a shaky step toward the door. Later, he would reflect that he should have taken a second, and then a third. Instead he turned. “What do I want, you ask? I’ll tell you what I want. I want what is mine by rights. I want Casterly Rock.” His father’s mouth grew hard. “Your brother’s birthright?” "The knights of the Kingsguard are forbidden to marry, to father children, and to hold land, you know that as well as I. The day Jaime put on that white cloak, he gave up his claim to Casterly Rock, but never once have you acknowledged it. It’s past time. I want you to stand up before the realm and proclaim that I am your son and your lawful heir.” Lord Tywin’s eyes were a pale green flecked with gold, as luminous as they were merciless. “Casterly Rock,”he declared in a flat cold dead tone. And then, “Never.” The word hung between them, huge, sharp, poisoned. I knew the answer before I asked, Tyrion said. Eighteen years since Jaime joined the Kingsguard, and I never once raised the issue. I must have known. I must always have known. “Why?” he made himself ask, though he knew he would rue the question. “You ask that? You, who killed your mother to come into the world? You are an ill-made, devious, disobedient, spiteful little creature full of envy, lust, and low cunning. Men’s laws give you the right to bear my name and display my colors, since I cannot prove that you are not mine. To teach me humility, the gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing that proud lion that was my father’s sigil and his father’s before him. But neither gods nor men shall ever compel me to let you turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse.” -Tyrion A Storm of Swords

Such a sad moment for Tyrion. At 4:33 you can see how disappointed he is because he is being blamed for something he had nothing to do and he cant do anything about it. Thats why he went off silently without saying anything. I think this scene finishes their father and son relationship
@@ben1ben2ben1 That point has been made a couple of times. The Tywin/Jaime scene in season one where Tywin urges Jaime to be "the man he is meant to be", all while dressing a fucking deer is non canonical in the books. So is the Arya/Tywin conversations in Harrenhall and most of Arya/The Hound's relationship in season 4 (which I consider to be best in the show tbh). It's not because they ran out of books. It's because they ran out of writing.
Yeah especially compared to the hot garbage called house of the dragon. If the house of the dragon screenwriters made this scene it was have been 15 minutes of his mother giving birth and dying with little to no dialogue.
@@Krisliet Just because the show writers could add a non book scene here and there that was great doesn't mean they can write basically a whole story. GRRM has a VERY distinct way of writing that is very difficult to replicate. The story is very tough as well. GRRM himself is struggling to figure out how to tie things together. And all the scenes you mentioned were when GRRM was working with the show as a consultant. He left in season 5 to go work on the books (that hasn't gone so well lol). The scenes they added that were great they got help from George. They didn't have that season 5-8 and it showed in the massive drop in quality
The saddest and ironic about this scene is that Tyrion is the child that so like and closest to his father in talents and ability compared to his other siblings. Yet Tywin due to his hatred and loathing of Tyrion can never see that or praise him for it. Creating as lasting hatred between that will eventually cause Tywin's death.
"The gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing the proud lion that was my father's sigil and his father's before him." Damn that's a powerful line! 😩 Brilliantly spoken by dance
Tywin has generally been a character I couldn’t come to hate due to his extreme intelligence and presence but this scene is an exception. Tyrion’s been looked down upon by the whole world, including his father and sister, for being a dwarf and ‘killing’ his mother, something he can’t control. This unfortunately happens in real life too, so many awful parents are biased against certain children for qualities and characteristics they can do nothing about
“Now, I have seven kingdoms to look after and three of them are in open rebellion.” Only Tywin could make something as serious as a full uprising within the kingdoms seem like a nuisance.
Tywin knew this whole time he was talking to his only worthy successor, but his idiotic hatred prevented him from ever admitting it. He and Tyrion would have been unstoppable as a team.
I think thats you projectinf on Tywin. All Tywin sees is a disgusting little imp that he feels compelled but not honored to attach himself to. He never looked at Tyrion as a son and not even as an ally. Tyrion is a tool at the best of times and a liability the rest of the time. Tywin is not even convinced Tyrion is his biological son as he hints in this very scene. There is no quiet respect and understanding that people love to add in.
It's so great how in one breath Tywin can diminish Tyrion's achievements by emphasising that he's a Lannister and his son, and then in the next, completely undercut what Tyrion being his son should mean. If Tywin actually treated him like a son, instead of just weaponising it against him, Tyrion wouldn't have turned out how he is.
Yeah. And this is because Tywin is an immature apathetic person who believes that admitting a mistake is weakness and who sees everything that is immoral, unfair and wrong in society as universal rules of life. Tywin thought so much about the family's political position that he ignored any of the family's needs.

Tywin was a smart man - one of the smartest in all Westeros. Unfortunately, he couldn't get past his hate and shame for Tyrion, even when he recognized how capable Tyrion was. As a real team, they would have been virtually unstoppable.
You are totally right
The thing I love about this show is that characters face the consequences of their OWN actions, rather than their enemy's.

Can you imagine if Twying had embraced Tyrion after this point and treat him not like a son but as an equal? They would've been unstoppable.

EkhidnaSkiz you are basically judging his character from a 21st century point of view ( im not saying you are wrong). but going back 200-1000 years back. A very powerful lord or king wouldrarely let his dwarf son or daughter be the heir if he has other sons.
Nathan Drake Yes, but it is till messed up anytime in history
To teach me humility the gods have condemned me to watch u waddle about. The way he moves his head when he says waddle about. The disdain and half truths in his monologue are so vicious. Charles Dance is a savage.
Jerry Cregan Stark Mathurin I was referring to Tyrion killing his Mother, I think. That’s one way to look at it but a really twisted perspective. Not fair. As for what ur talking about, I don’t know. I never read the books and wasn’t that into the show.
His head movement is forever imprinted in my memory. That's how well he delivered his line.
Tyrion had to be so self conscious of his waddling as he turned to leave to the room 😭
Thats the bit I always liked.
@@barneyboyle6933 😀
I think this was the moment (if there was a single one) where Tyrion realized he could never mean anything to Tywin. As much as he liked jousting with his father, I think Tyrion had hope for gaining SOMETHING from him, even if just some grudging respect.
Tywin did respect Tyrion. This interaction showed that. He may not like or even love him but he values him as a son.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 He loved his son it was obvious he just had a grudge against him and his pride would not let go of it
@@ispeakonlyfacts.3228 I don't know if I'd go that far.
"And I would let myself be consumed by maggots before mocking the family name by making you heir to Casterly Rock."
This scene actually makes me cry lol.
The family did live on, Tyrion inherited Casterly Rock after the death of Jaime
I love Tywin Lannister, but, in this instance, he needed his ass beat. He learns later what treating his son like shit leads to.
He is not wrong about some things tho. Tyrion also led Daenerys to her demise so Tywin was right for the most part in judging Tyrion`s abilities.
Something I love about this series is just listening to the ambience of the scenes. The wine being poured into the cups, the faint animal sounds in the background, the scratching of Tywin's pen as he writes, footsteps in the stone corridors...in this world of unpleasantness, there's something so...calming about it all :)
LOVE THIS!
Dont forget the hands seal

Yes so true
The wind and the bird chirps too. Etc
But then, Tyrion's bad habits of drinking & whoring are a minus.
yep
i think tyrions even better because he can adapt really easy he finds out what everyone arounds him want so that he knows the players of the game and then he adapts his strategies. he would make the lannisters even more powerfull then they already are.

Tyrion is a Mad King's son. Not Tywin's. And Tywin knows it.
As cruel as Tywin was, I loved his character for some reason; the show started going downhill ever since Tywin died.
Just let the story of Castamere run through your head. Tywin was the best. GOT. SHIT. DONE!
Even without Tywin, the show got less and less interesting as all the characters started dying. Robert, Ned, the Tyrells, they all contributed. In Season 8 there were like 5 characters left.
Ghaffar_KH in large part because Charles Dance played him brilliantly. His glare and presence intimidated nearly everyone
@Lone Reaper what do you mean? i dont read the book. Can you tell me?

Robert to Lancel "Your mother was a whore with a fat ass"
Not too much in common of course, as Tyrion's favorite uncle was Gerion, who Tywin resented for his jovial nature and kindness to Tyrion. I don't recall if the book ever discusses Tywin's feelings regarding the man after his death though. Maybe he respected him somewhat for his desire to see Brightroar reclaimed, or maybe he thought him just a suicidal fool, prancing in the mists of doomed Valyria for a lost sword and a petty token of honor.

@@ronsellick5093 Exactly, OP is probably talking out his arse
Their relationship is the most interesting on the show. Tywin sees Tyrion's strategic abilities, leadership skills, and intelligence as right up there with his own, which is why he made him hand of the King, and he has deep conversations with him about running the kingdom more than any other character. Tyrion's is the only opinion other than his own that he gives any consideration to when it comes to matters of leadership. Yet the things that disgust him about Tyrion, specifically the way he chooses to live, is pretty much entirely due to Tywin never properly accepting him as his son and being disgusted by his existence.

Tyrion does spend a lot of time chasing whores and drinking

I want Casterly Rock.”
His father’s mouth grew hard. I want you to stand up before the realm and proclaim that I am your son and your lawful heir.”
Lord Tywin’s eyes were a pale green flecked with gold, as luminous as they were merciless. “Casterly Rock,”he declared in a flat cold dead tone. And then, “Never.”
The word hung between them, huge, sharp, poisoned.
But neither gods nor men shall ever compel me to let you turn Casterly Rock into your whorehouse.”

you mean "- Twyin" at the end.
@@supermal112233 no. It’s a Tyrion POV chapter
Wow
Interesting so consumed by maggots was added for the show. Tbf I think that was a good adition and better than never and added to an already great segment
"Watch you woddle about" lmaooooo the head shake tho! #BrilliantActing
(The word is 'waddle' but hard agree otherwise :D)
Did anyone else expect Tywin, after dismissing Tyrion, to say "not you" like every other time he dismisses people?
ArcanicEight lol someone needs to do a montage of that
yeah totally expected that with just them 2 in the room.... idiot
The most heartbreaking dialogue on the show. Tywin's cruelty here was legendary.
It's lifted from the books - where he actually deserved at least some of it.
@@CharleyGurlhe didn't deserve any of it ya heartless bastard
@@TJ-fe7rrRight, Tyrion threatening to beat and violate Tommen was fine and Tywin should not be angry. 🙄
They did say "in the books". From where the dialogue comes. Sorry to bust your TV bubble but noble Tyrion ain't a thing IN THE BOOKS.
@@KrolockTepes I've read the books dumbass. I know what Tyrion is like in the books and how exactly Tywin has treated him through the years. Tyrion tried to help Joffrey and he's always tried to make his father proud, to no avail.
@@TJ-fe7rrAnd I'm the Queen of England. You're just a TV fan.
Such a sad moment for Tyrion. At 4:33 you can see how disappointed he is because he is being blamed for something he had nothing to do and he cant do anything about it. Thats why he went off silently without saying anything. I think this scene finishes their father and son relationship
This is Game of Thrones at its best. Yet there's no dragon or battle in this scene. How could the show runners forget that?
Tywin's lines are directly from the books. They didn't have books to follow after season 4/5
Guess they "Kinda Forgot" about a lot of things
For any man who looks for admiration from his father this scene speaks volumes
The saddest and ironic about this scene is that Tyrion is the child that so like and closest to his father in talents and ability compared to his other siblings. Yet Tywin due to his hatred and loathing of Tyrion can never see that or praise him for it. Creating as lasting hatred between that will eventually cause Tywin's death.
I love how Tyrion knows exactly what kind of powerplay Tywin is trying to pull with the pen, but Tyrion just keeps sitting and poking fun at papa.
Gods the writing was great back then
It was GRRM ..
RIP game of thrones

"The gods have condemned me to watch you waddle about wearing the proud lion that was my father's sigil and his father's before him."
Damn that's a powerful line! 😩 Brilliantly spoken by dance
This show cast phenomenal actors, but Charles Dance stil stood above them all in each scene. He is truly next level.
"to teach me humility" and "waddle about" goddamn the dialogue was amazing
its from the book
Waddle around and meet new friends
Tywin has generally been a character I couldn’t come to hate due to his extreme intelligence and presence but this scene is an exception. Tyrion’s been looked down upon by the whole world, including his father and sister, for being a dwarf and ‘killing’ his mother, something he can’t control. This unfortunately happens in real life too, so many awful parents are biased against certain children for qualities and characteristics they can do nothing about
“Now, I have seven kingdoms to look after and three of them are in open rebellion.”
Only Tywin could make something as serious as a full uprising within the kingdoms seem like a nuisance.
@@shihoblade The books disagree.
@@tek512 You're gonna need to provide textual evidence for that because in the books Tywin seems even less fond of Tyrion imo lol.
@@shihoblade it's a bit more complicated than that.
And this dude wonders why he got shot on the toilet by a crossbow. Jeeze, Tyrion only wanted some recognition.
They put two cups in the scene and gave us a Shot from above just ti emphasize on how Tywin won’t pore his son a cup
"Tywin was not a wise father. Tywin was not a good father. If he was, perhaps he'd still be alive."
Do u have instagram
Yeah. And this is because Tywin is an immature apathetic person who believes that admitting a mistake is weakness and who sees everything that is immoral, unfair and wrong in society as universal rules of life. Tywin thought so much about the family's political position that he ignored any of the family's needs.
