- What do you think of the new bike lanes on EDSA?
The MMDA tried using painted lane markings, signs and enforcement to keep motorcycles and cars out of the bike lanes.
But they quickly realized the same thing as LGUs, unless you place an enforcer every 20 meters, nothing works to keep drivers out of the bike lanes except physical barriers.
So you will notice concrete dividers or barriers have been installed along some parts of the bike lane.
The bike lanes are NOT finished yet. They're still installing more dividers, painting them yellow, installing reflectors, additional signages etc.
I've heard some motorcycle riders suggest the bike lane should be shared with MC and bicycles.
But after watching many motorcycle riders force cyclists out of their way and even one rider hit a cyclist, I simply can't agree with the suggestion to make it a shared space.

I remember my uncle who lives in the USA said that it was already stop sign he still went through the red light. I guess he didn't know there was a fast camera caught him and had a photo and was send to him by mail. He had to pay the penalty or else he will face the judge and have more penalties or go to prison.
He only would receive a bench warrant if you didn't pay the fine. They would not actively search for him. But if pulled over again they could arrest to make him pay the fine and see judge.
$50 for that in virginia...

At the last part the bicycle riders didnt follow simple traffic stop. So it shows that even though theyve given a privelege for a bike lane, they are still prone for major accidents. They should also be penalized for not following simple traffic signs and stops.

Also remind the bikes to always be inside the bike lanes. Many bikers (not at EDSA) even use the middle lanes.

Fine the cyclists that don't use the bike lanes as they Cause traffic problems and accidents by swerving in and out of traffic.
im sure they use the middle lanes just because some car is parked where they are supposed to go, or jeeps and buses picking up people at side of the road. bikers dont use the middle of the road for long periods of time unless one is crazy. don't compare it to riders in okada, those bikers are wrong, just because they are riding like a peloton and there are few vehicles out there that they have to be in the middle of the road all the time.

Passed the bike lane (on a bicycle) on Edsa last Sunday, April 25. It was splendid to be able to bike on Edsa knowing that there’s a bike lane. But please, DPWH should fix the roads on the bike lane. Plenty of imperfections. It’s an accident waiting to happen. Please please. Or for the meantime, paint on the imperfections so they can be easily spotted from afar.
Or just ride safely. Maraming kalsada ang sira sira para unahin pa ang bike lane. Be grateful na mayroong bikelane. Mas malaking aksidente ang pwedeng mangyari sa lane ng malalaking sasakyan kesa sa lane ng mga bike. Magingat sa pagdadrive wag kayong demanding.
Or if your just having a joyride and nowhere important to go and is without means to commute or drive, just dont go biking in EDSA. Just remind yourself why they were allowed before?

I use these bike lanes regularly and now I feel much safer with the barriers because, as you say painted lines just get ignored. You don't want to ignore a concrete barrier. The only issue now is that even though there are signs at intersections to tell turning motorists to give way to cyclists the sign is often ignored by the motorist, so the cyclist has to be aware of being sideswiped by a turning vehicle.
Again, make the fines so hefty they wont be able to afford doing it again.
They should make the minimum traffic fine to 5000 pesos.
Higher fines is the only way to discipline motorists in the Philippines

I don't know about local laws for bicycles but in my opinion cyclist should follow traffic laws, re: crossing a stoplight, while on public roads. Otherwise, its an accident waiting to happen.
Sa mga nagba-bike, please maximize the use of the bike lanes. Wag na kayong sumabay sa regular lane at makipagsiksikan sa mga sasakyan at motor. Kaya ang lalakas din ng loob ng mga kamoteng motorcycle rider na gumamit ng bike lanes kasi di nyo ginagamit. Saka sumunod din kayo sa batas trapiko. Pag red light, stop din. Kitang-kita sa last part ng video yung dalawang siklista porket walang sasakyan pumunta sa gitna kahit red light. Eto namang kamoteng rider sa video nagmamatigas pa. More filipinos should have wider awareness about how traffic mark and traffic sign goes. Lets give liscences to people who deserve it.
LTO should re inforce or improve their test for getting liscence, i know a couple who are no read no write but have liscence
Correct! The test drive that LTO conducts inside their compound by just running in circles with obstacles is not the right way to gauge an applicants driving skill and awareness/knowledge of traffic rules, regulations and safety in my opinion.. Napakadali pa dn kumuha ng license sa Pilipinas. Pag tinaasan mo ang mga penalties or requirements, ssbhin na anti-poor lalo na sa mga PUB N PUJ drivers na un lng ang trabaho. Don't they get in? The public's safety is on their hands kya nararapat lng na they should be the best drivers to handle/drive Public transport.

The problem is the system with LTO and Filipinos themselves. First with LTO having exam that is too easy to pass that can't really screen applicants if they really not just read but study and put the road rules in their head. But issue is also with the citizens that some even requesting to abolish the test because it is "anti-poor".
This is not counting the corruption like fixers, which means somebody can get license without any test at all, but the license is also legitimate. So they have legal license but also don't know the rules because the means to get it is illegal.
Correct me if im wrong but the main reason why bicycles was allowed in major national roads early last year was due to the lack of public transport caused by the pandemic. But now that we are basically one tier away from normal and PUVs are available and is 70% capable, i dont see the need for bikers to traverse in EDSA anymore. I hope the MMDA and IATF realizes this soon. And pls e-scooters should be registered in LTO as well. Im sure at least 50% of those driving it dont even have a non pro license.
Lets try to get back to normal, ban bicycles in EDSA already!

Alamin nyo kung saan pa kau dapat n lane. Kadalasan nasa fast lane pa kayo, di naman big bike ang dala nyo. Sa totoo lang nakakailang kayo sa kalsada. Tokyo doesnt have these crazy bike lanes. People casualy bike on the sidewalks. Its safer and provides better shed. Thats why there are more bikes than cars in Tokyo. 86% of people there owns a bike. Mostly bikes from home to train stations, so train stations have massive bicycle parking spaces. Everyones bikes from mothers, salarymen, schoolgirls, seniors etc. Its safer for bikes to be on the sidewalks, plus it wont hassle the loading/unloading of deliveries and goods.
Note: Filipinos should be more creative in their local setting. Needs to stop imitating the bike lanes of Western countries because they have a unique condition and setup. Make design that will work with the locality.

Dito sa usapin ng Bike Lane, medyo hindi ako pabor. Hindi dahil sa ayaw ko sa nagbibisikleta. In fact nung student years ko sa Japan, bisikleta lang kami. But it was never setup like this na napakadelikado.
1. Ang ideal bike lane ay dapat hiwalay sa public highway. Dapat extension sya ng pedestrian lane, at hindi ng mismong kalsadang dinadaanan ng motored vehicles. Dapat completely hiwalay ang Bisikleta sa De Motor na sasakyan. Kasi pag may banggaan wala naman panalo bisikleta eh. Completely dapat sila hiwalay and there should be no such thing as road sharing because it is dangerous.
2. Ayon sa LTO code natin malinaw na nakasaad na ang public highway ay para sa motor vehicle. Malinaw din na sinaad dito na di kasama dyan ang mga Bisikleta, lownmower, o mga scooter. Ayon din sa batas, kung magmamaneho ka ng sasakyan sa kalsada dapat may Lisensya ka. At yun ang unfair. Kaming mga naghihirap sa lisensya namin konting mali multa o kumpiska agad. Pero yan mga bisikleta na ayaw magstay sa lane nila, gitna ng gitna, di naman yan sila hinuhuli o tiniticketan. Ni hindi rin sinisita ng mga MMDA na yan.
3. Cyclers also need to be educated din kasi. Pag bisikleta ka, stay in your lane. Huwag ka tatawid gamit ang mga designated intersections ng motor vehicle. Use the pedestrian Zebra lanes like a regular pedestrian should. Ganyan ginagawa namin noon sa Japan. Pag bisikleta ka, regular pedestrian ka pa din. At kung may overpass, di iakyat mo dun bisikleta mo. Huwag ka sasabay lalo kung pakaliwa sa mga intersection at madidisgrasya ka nyan.
4. Di ko rin maintindihan kung bakit ang pinakadelikadong kalsada nilalagyan pa din Bike Lane. Maski yun matatarik na paakyat at pababa. Kaya ito namang mga Hobbyist ginagawa nilang leisure road bawat public highway. Next thing you know, maski express lanes lalagayn na din nila Bike lanes.
Again hindi ako tutol sa kosepto ng pagbibisikleta. But as a motorist, lagay naman natin sila sa tamang lugar para iwas disgrasya. Wala namang motorista na gusto makasagasa. Kargo mo pa yan. Eh talagang dami pasaway na siklista. Misan wala pa helmet.
What about those bicycle rider who are not on the bike lane? I saw on the video they were not on the bike lane. Are they penalized also?

Are we able to hit them? Since they knew that if they gonna cross even its red light they might be get hit. In short they taking the risk.
Those road are made at the beginning for the motorist. That bike lane just made due to the pandemic.
So the bikers must to have a rules and policy same as motorist.
Imagine, if we accidentally hit some bikers due to there not following the red light, we are the one will get penalties. Even its the bikers fault.

Bike Lane in Edsa is a very dangerous, what happen if no MMDA? a lot of accident occur you will see, Edsa is a main road it is not advisable to put bike lane ( that's my opinion )

Make the fine bigger more than 500,000php maximum penalty for the violators who entered bike lanes just like in Singapore or Hong Kong teach people a lot of discipline without breaking the law. ;)

Whats the penalty for bikers who are outside the bike lane for no apparent reason? Im seeing a lot of this where either bikers dont care of their lane, biking alongside another biker so they can chat, etc. There should also be penalty for that.

I think, they should also impose penalties to those bikers who will go out of their lanes. I saw lots of kamote bikers too.
Most motorcycle riders uses the bike lanes within Metro Manila. without LGUs issuing fines, they would assume its not illegal, thus when they are on EDSA, they have the same mind set. I think MMDA should encourage LGUs to also be strict. Another point, I rarely see riders' TV shows or advocates reprimands their viewers or patrons, such a shame.
