  • Buy one, no regrets. This tool uses 14 of my suggestions to Dewalt. They only left our 3. I have designs for a random orbital and a rotary buffer if anyone can temp me to partner up.
    5/8" coarse thread, at least a 1/2" long to space off the wheel.
    I have many more (300+)videos; before and after boat detailing videos including boat waxing, boat buffing...

    I use a DeWalt DWP849X
    If I'm going for perfection in gelcoat, I don't use a ceramic (unless a very new boat) I prefer the ease, cost and reliability of Fire Glaze by RMP. Make sure you get all the oxidation out of the gelcoat, get a great finish, clean and strip the surface and then apply Fire Glaze.

    (tell them Lee sent you. No discount and I receive nothing but I'd like them to know 😊)
    There's a "marine" version but it has the same main ingredient as Fire Glaze, just a different lubricant/carrier solution made to be environment friendly. I find it dries rather fast and as I'm in a hot climate, I use Fire Glaze instead of Restructure Marine Polish. I like their Mirasol spray for all the interior furnishings as well.

    It's what I purchased thanks to your videos! Amazing machine with more power than I need for sure! Has made compounding, polishing and waxing the boat a breeze! Gonna give it a try on our truck also!

      On your truck: Foam pads for beginners, no stopping, no high speeds and never let the wheel spin too long on an edge. Here's where the velcro backing plate can come in handy, I like them for cars and removing the spindle nut will lower your center of gravity on the machine so you'll feel even more in control. Be fluid and always in motion, dance over the paint.
      Let the compounds fully break down (try your marine 31 and see how it is on paint)
      Before wax/polishing, clean the panel or ith some clean rags and window cleaner, make the polish bond to a clean dry surface.
      She's a beast but can be a beauty if allowed to be.
      Thanks for the FB luv!

    If you want to use double sided pads I highly recommend getting the 3m quick release spindle and pads. Much better than messing around with those bolts beause you can swap wool to foam or flip the pad in seconds.

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I actually have 3 quick connect adapters and on a bigger boat where I'm swapping sides/pads all day, it saves time. My issue is that the recent production by 3m of their QC pads is they all wobble and aren't very well balanced.
      You make a good point however, one I don't usually toss out there. I'm happy if people just try compounding over wetsanding honestly. I figure we can get into the product and tool list way after the technique is learned/understood.

    How come you didn’t go cordless? I just picked up the cordless one for $158 bare tool on Amazon this week. I can’t wait to use it.

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because, as I told Dewalt, I have a buffer that works, every time. I don't need a charger, extra batteries or something that weighs more than my current tool.
      For small ski boats or a car, it's great. I don't think it can last for 5-6 hours, hard grinding. If it can't, why would it be something we'd use on a big boat? Time is money. Swapping out batteries isn't efficient for what I do.
      A corded buffer does not bother me. New tech that wastes my time does.

    • @TheNottonight
      @TheNottonight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Local_Boydidgood time is money but when your dragging a cord around all day is time consuming. tripping hazard plug getting up plugged. Once I went cordless over 20 years ago I am never going back to corded. Not to mention how much better the tools and battery life has gotten.

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I can appreciate that howei, as I designed the DWP849X and they (Dewalt) asked me to help them on the cordless version, I didn't mind the cord, that never failed me. A cordless buffer on a 100+ foot boat.. Nothing is cordless with a crew of 7 waxing monkeys. Batteries will never last doing what I do.
      A car, fine. A newer boat that doesn't require hours of grinding fine. Removing decades of oxidation takes effort, time and power, constant and consistent power, a battery can't do that.
      Friends of mine have electric weed whackers, chainsaws, even mowers but they all fall short (while quieter and less messy) compared to what's worked for generations.
      If you think a cordless buffer can do what I do, mail me one and I'll do a video on it (I'll return it)
      You could be right. I'm not the "guy". I just don't mind cord management and we're all really good at it, experts one might say. I'm not seeing the benefits to me yet. In time perhaps. I draw about 13 amps when I'm grinding and do it for 8 hours at a time. No battery can take that so I'd need a charger and extra batteries. This means I need a power adapter for the shore power, a cord to add the cgfi in-line, then extra batteries. Not cordless exactly right? I don't need more things and toys. I need to get in, get done and get to the next boat that day. I trust my equipment because it hasn't failed me in over 15 years. I'm loyal to that kind of rewarding relationship.

    Awesome upload, thanks for the unboxing and info. I am new to polishing boats, 🚤 I had a question, what is your opinion of the 3m's 5/8 quick connect adapter ?

    • @Local_Boydidgood
      @Local_Boydidgood  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do this all day on many boats and have many pads... Toss up. I liked the spindle extender nut and a double-sided pad just fine and don't really save time with the quick connect/pads used with it. That said, sometimes all you can find are the quick connect pads so you need to have both kinds of adapter nuts, sadly.
      I have about 250 videos about nothing but, how to best use a Dewalt DWP849X so enjoy and if you have any questions, let me know.
