I am 84 years old, a life-long heart patient, and have been diagnosed with stage 1 lymphedema, apparently resulting from having both knee joints replaced some years ago. My right foot, ankle and lower leg swells considerable more than my left. Sleeping with legs raised higher than my heart reduces swelling considerably. I just completed a physical therapy/education program and have been fitted with a velcro wrap device intended to control further swelling when worn continuously. Compression socks and surgery were not considered appropriate for my condition. I have been encouraged to do specific exercises, ride my exercise bike, and walk as much as I am able to. I've been told that there is currently no cure for lymphedema.

Some US doctors don't know much about it either. Medical professionals from non western countries seem to understand this condition better...

In the US they say lose weight. My sister is not overweight and has this. The medical profession is dangerous these days.

Agree too much medical intervention about covid but not other serious illnesses medicine is missing the problem with all chronic pain

when I lose weight it looks so much worse because my body is lean but one ankle and foot is much bigger. I've had this since a child, I think it's genetics because my dad and his sister has it

My was different and complex case, when I came back from America after 2 weeks holiday in 2014. My left leg/ankle started to swell and my doctor and I thought it was DVT, we kept our eyes on it. My doctor sent me for x-ray and stay in the hospital overnight. After many investigations, my doctor diagnosed that a tree branch hit my left leg and I didn’t get it treated, that is how I got lymphoedema on my left leg, now I wearing compression socks to reduce swelling.

@lindavalenzuela2928 I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles with lymphedema and the misdiagnosis. Living with such a condition for so long must be incredibly challenging, especially with the difficulty of wearing shoes. Lymphedema can be managed with proper care, including compression garments, lymphatic drainage massage, and exercises to reduce swelling. It's also crucial to work with healthcare professionals who specialize in lymphedema management to improve quality of life. You deserve the best possible support, and I hope you find the right care moving forward.

@barwaqahassan0722 I'm really sorry you're feeling this way, but please know you're not alone. 😢 Lymphedema can be challenging, but it’s important to remember that it's a medical condition many others manage too. It’s okay to seek support from others who understand, and there are treatments and strategies that can help manage it. Be kind to yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals who can offer guidance and care. You’re strong, and you’ve got this! 💖

I did not hear light massage or compression wraps for treatment.

Yes I had therapy at stage 1 it helped but then a year later it is back worse and now I believe it’s at stage two. But I do have a compression wrap on my arm and I do do light massage as that’s what the physical therapist did also.

I have late stage or stage 3 in both legs, I am getting lumps under my skin on left extremity now so im worried. I am on ssd and my ted hose help and elevation doesn't do much for me now. it's painful too but I have neuropathy so that helps me to not have as much pain. its a joke and im tired of it but its my life now. I have never had cancer treatment, just tumors cut out off of me. no radiation either. I got it from sitting all the time while homeless although I had it for many years stage 1 and don't know how I got it.

@StoneZachary-y4k Lymphedema is a condition where fluid builds up in tissues, usually causing swelling, often in the arms or legs. If Lopez, Edward, Garcia, Linda, Moore, or Betty are names related to individuals managing lymphedema, it's essential for them to work closely with healthcare professionals to develop effective management plans. This might include compression therapy, exercise, and skincare to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
